2013 TSUN Football News

Gotta wonder how one dimensional Michigan will be since they'll be pretty short at QB. I can't imagine Gardner will be as mobile as Denard was, or at least taking off with the ball as often. They really can't risk him using designed run plays unless he's going to slide every time. Theres a good chance they'll pickup at least some graduate player to fill the roll, but I don't think the threat to run will be there and it could hamper their offense a bit. It's probably not what they want now with Gardner picking up the reigns again.

It's my understanding that Borges hated having to find creative ways to use Robinson in the offense and won't be looking for a replacement to fill that role. After all, this is the guy that said speed is overrated.

They want to go back to the oak tree statue QB glory days of Carr anyway (think John Navarre  ) and Gardner is slightly above average fast for a QB but otherwise isn't very mobile. I think they would prefer to keep their QBs cement footed in the pocket in their offense.

Do you anticipate ND playing in this series again in the future, or do old habits die hard?

Where to begin.

I don't think Borges hated having to find creative ways to use Robinson. I think he hated that Robinson was a piss poor passer and only regressed as a passer when he tried to install more of his offense. Borges has run a specific system his entire college career, and has been pretty damn successful running it. He's never had a 5'11" QB that can't pass the ball at all. He had to do the best with what he had.

FYI, it was Jeff Hecklinski, the WR's coach said speed is overrated. And it is. Look at Ted Ginn, NFL failure as an example of this. Ginn gets drafted at #9 overall because of his speed, does nothing in the NFL at WR because he can't run routes or catch the football.

Al Borges doesn't want to go back to the oak tree statue days of Jon Navarre. Some of the best QB's that Borges has coached in the past had a some mobility to them. Gardner is definitely better than "slightly above average for a QB" in the mobility/speed department, and the two QB's that Borges has actually recruited- Shane Morris and Wilton Speight- aren't oak tree statues like Jon Navarre, both have a little mobility to them.

I think what they would prefer going forward are QB's that are passers first, because what good is a QB that can't pass the ball?

That may be how it went down in the NFL, but he sure torched Michigan on a number of plays due to speed. Results on the college field will always trump results in the NFL when it comes to the job security of college coaches.

laughable example given how dominant Ginn was in college.

Heck tossed out that ridiculous excuse because his team had recruited horribly at the wr position for many years, forcing a good but not great athlete in Gardner to play WR. At the time of that quote, Hoke was not recruiting at a Rich Rod level at the wr position, and that was hardly a stocked cupboard RR left behind.

Speed kills. Obviously you can't be a track star without football skills but Ginn was a prime example of not needing a polished skillset to succeed.

I'm normally not a fan of strawmen, but on this one I have question your usage of the word "failure". Coming up on seven years in the league (regardless of impact) is not failing. It's not like he was a number 3 pick to the Browns and can't catch.

Let me get this straight--a WR coach at TSUN makes a stupid comment about college football, and you try support that stupid comment by pointing to a player's performance in the NFL, even though that player was an AP All-American and a member of the All-Big Ten first team in college?

I'd argue the "failure" label you've given him, but I get your point. Speed may not be the number 1 quality required to make a "good" receiver. But I'd also argue that it is a very good quality to have.

I know I'm taking the comments out of context, but to simply state that speed is overrated after not recruiting any quality receivers* makes him look like he is just making excuses for the poor recruiting at that position.

*Note that I do not follow recruiting. My research into this area is limited to the above few posts. If I cared more about this subject, I might do more research. If it turns out that the receivers are "good" or "great", I'd be happy to admit that I am wrong.

It is a rare man that can make Roberto Duran seem like he's got soft hands.

Here's a pretty decent video which shows why speed may not be over rated.....

And..

Also why being able to catch is a skill you'd like your WRs to have (See, 3:08)

Morgan :slappy: Trent, with his 4.13 forty time, would be a much better example than Teddy Ginn....
