2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

It's not just a CB that needs to be replaced here though. It's a captain and his leadership that we'll be missing.

Thankfully we still have Pittsburgh Brown for leadership as well at the S position. We have good(but unproven) depth at S where Bryant's injury may not hurt all that much. Would be a much worse casuality if this was a an O or D linemen.

I didn't think the linebackers looked ok in pass coverage, I thought they looked bad. I can't name any times where D. Grant got beat and I thought Barnett and Bryant played well. Powell got beat a few times but overall he was good.

I don't think the linebackers caused all the completions to Abra-houdini. There were so many people in the box that the linebackers did not look bad on the run either, because it was tackle-by-mob. Possibly, if we had not sold out against the run, then the linebackers would have looked bad.

However, in this game, it was a win, and I say the linebackers did good enough, though obviously everyone can and should improve.

The D Line is good and will be great next year as everyone should be back. This is the most important position group for an elite team and we should be encouraged that we are seeing such early success.

The LBs as a group are mediocre and will probably be the same next year as Shazier will depart but some young guys will hopefully develop. We are so thin currently and Grant and Perry still not proven players it's hard to expect the position group as a whole to be a lot better anytime soon but we are landing good talent. When Urb took over, the WR group was the most criticized because he is an offensive coach but truthfully the LB group as a whole was easily the weakest. So much so that it will take the longest to improve. Not landing any difference makers in Urbs first short class is really hurting us. Also coaching here is very important. We need the same impact for this group that Warriner had on the offensive line.

The secondary is decent/good and will be about the same next year. Roby will be gone but unlike the LBs the talent was brought in earlier with Urb and existing players from old regime have panned out better so far.

Overall we have to think the defense will be better each year but will experience growing pains along the way. This belongs in another thread but Tresselball play calling like we saw against Wisky last night is a reflection of the staffs confidence in the defense not the offense.

Who gets the first call at safety now that Bryant is done? Judging by who has been on the field, I'd say Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown. This is where having depth makes a big difference. If other teams in the Big lose a starting safety, they would most likely end up with a freshman at safety.
