2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

There has been a much bigger impact to the offensive side of the ball with the new staff. The defense is just not that impressive. I like the momentum I see building on the D Line but other than Shazier I am just not blown away by any aspect of our D. Roby didn't look like a first round draft pick against Cal. Reeves is slowly getting better which is encouraging but this defense just doesn't inspire me like it used to and I don't know why. I guess it starts with not being able to simply tackle?

You can't measure the yardage anymore. In the good old days, defensive goals were to hold teams to under 300 yards total, less than three yards per rush, those kinds of things. Those goals should be put in a museum somewhere, because they're antiquated. ... Cal's very good on offense, but look at how it went for Ohio State defensively. Yardage got chewed up, but they got takeaways, they got sacks, they got pressure in the backfield. So I wouldn't worry about Ohio State's defense.

To be honest the OSU defense hasn't been overly impressive since 2002. It all starts up front and the 2002 DL was one of the best I've seen. We've had a lot of talent on the DL over the past 10 years, but none that could control the LOS like the 2002 group.

We seem to have issues with passing teams running the ball so it will be interesting to see how a running team like Wiscy does when we know what they are going to try to do. From what I've seen in the B1G so far nobody scares me, but going up against an Oregon or Bama is where we are going to need to be hitting on all cylinders.

I guess that's my point. I think we have a D Line that is clearly on the rise. In fact I think it's better than at this point last year. I think the D Line is improving because so far it has been infused with young talent more than other position groups and they are buying into Vrabel. Maybe that's it. I think teams and players pick up the personality of their coaches. I hate saying this but I am just not sold on the Fickell/Withers combo yet. Maybe it's simply different ideologies that don't mesh. Honestly I have no idea. That's a scheme conversation that's obviously up for discussion but you would think sound tackling would be universally supported by any defensive coach.

The 2005 defense was pretty darned good.

I believe during camp, Meyer mentioned in a press conference, the tackling has to improve. It's not like we're the only people to notice this problem. I'm guessing one way or another, Meyer will get the problem fixed.

I was pleased with the pressure we put on the QB, as well as the sacks and turnovers we got against CAL over the weekend. Wrapping up when tackling and taking wrong angles continues to be a problem, but let's give CAL and guys like Bigelow some credit. These guys can make people miss.

Bosa has been impressive and it is going to be interesting what they do with him when Washington gets healthy. No way you take this guy off the field. Shazier had another solid game apart from his brain fart on the late hit call. And Bryant is probably our best Defensive player right now.

The front seven is still relatively young and should only get better over time. Guys like Carter, Miller and Marcus are not only seeing playing time but making plays. We are much better off with our depth this year than what I initially thought with so many guys not seeing much of the field last year.

Safeties and corners need to work on ball handling skills. Dropped at least 3 picks and 2 were very easy catches. Not worried about our D. Just wrap up and make the easy play. With our style O, this D will be on the field for a long time so teams will get the yardage. Just don't let them get the points. It's a bend but don't break thing. Again, wrap up, tackle and complete the easy takeaways. Also, no stupid penalties.

Tackling was not near championship caliber at Cal. I would sit whoever the db was that tried a weak push from behind on a long td run.

And just to vent.......is it not a dead give-a-way when the qb lines up as a punter and throws for a first down?

They certainly did, but there are a bajillion coaches in the press box and sidelines. Goff also has his name on the back of his jersey. Coaches get paid to watch that stuff. I yelled from 43110 to Cal that it was him. I guess no one heard me outside of CW.

Also, do you think the Cal coaches have the punter and the qb with same number merely as a chance? The roster is sent out before hand and the Bucks coaches certainly knew. Was this a change for this game? Don't special teams coaches and special teams coordinators check this sort of thing out before the game? Ok I am done venting.

I thought the play was covered well and the QB made an outstanding throw. I know it is easier to find fault than recognize excellence, but I think this one was pretty obvious.

I was just coming to say something similar. It's not like the guy was wide open -- the receiver ran an actual route, the QB made a nice throw low and to the outside, and the receiver made a good a catch with the defender (Brown?) right behind him.
