2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

I watched the Northwestern / Cal bears game after watching the Buckeyes and Buffalo and the speed of the two games was quite a bit different. Northwestern and California played like they were in 1st and 2nd gear and never shifted, the whole 1st half.

Now I wonder what adjustments we will half to make in regards to playing against California. Maybe I am putting the cart before the horse, but we still have to deal with San Diego first. Does anybody think that we will have a problem with California. I can't help think about "Bigelow" and how he ran all over us last year in Columbus. I am just concerned about this game .

Just attack on defense please. No more of the soft zone BS. If we get beat on a couple of plays fine, but going after the offense the entire game instead of sitting back will make a huge difference.

They brought Heacock back as a defensive consultant this season. Heacock and Fickell/Heacock had amazing success for a decade limiting big plays and keeping everything in front of them. I don't think that's going to change because fan angst over play calling has shifted from offense to defense.

Agreed.

I think the difference is that under Meyer (and recruiting bears this out) they will put an emphasis back on the DL being more disruptive. That was really the weakness of the match up zone issues we had that culminated in the '06 NC game fiasco. If you have a DL that can create havoc by themselves then the "soft zone"/match up zone/keep everything in front of you concept for the back 7 is just fine.

If there is pressure, I am fully on board with the theory that an offense can't dink and dunk down the field on you consistently. If there is no pressure and its essentially a 7 on 7 I think the day has passed in CFB where you could count on the offense tripping themselves up.

Just my .02 anyway. I'm sure X/O experts can say it better than I am.

I agree.

Compare the results from the '06 NCG to the '09 Rose Bowl.

The scheme and strategy didn't change- Heyward and Gibson did.

OSU had a good front four in the desert. They didn't have a back seven. The weakest link of the role bowl d was probably Russell, a talent they Desperately needed in the desert but had to turn to Mitchell and O'Neal.
Then there is the grand Canyon in between the Gator rush ends and the ducks.

I would say we had a solid front 4 in '06 but far from disruptive. The back 7 was clearly the weak spot of the 2 groups but I think the point is still valid even if the example wasn't the best.

I think the D is OK too, but there is some faith involved. They did well against the run - which indicates a front 7 that is doing it's job. We will have to see if they can do it against a higher quality power running team - like the one coming into Ohio Stadium on the 28th. They were missing half of their backfield. Taking CJ and Roby out of there is taking a ton of talent and experience away. If they get everyone back and grow as a group week by week, they will be fine. They don't have to be a shut down unit until they play someone who can shut down Braxton and Co. Otherwise, if they can hold em under 20, we will be winning games by 3 TD's or more.

I think our best DL is Bennett and Washington inside and Spence and Bosa (JJ Watt Jr.) on the outside. This Dline is gonna become terrifying fast especially with a fully stocked secondary and hopefully press coverage on the outside. Can't wait to see it when Marcus grows into the viper position and micheal hill starts making an impact.
