Big Ten teams lack speed to compete outside conference

With that said, I like Baylor even more. That's why I moved the Bears ahead of Ohio State on my Harris Poll ballot this week. And I did it with confidence and conviction.

You give me a neutral field and put both of those teams on it, and I don't think it's even close. No offense to Ohio State, because the Buckeyes are well-coached and have excellent players, many of whom will contribute at the next level. But because of the way football is played today offensively, where players are spread out all over the field, really good Big Ten teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin will always be sizable underdogs against their SEC, Pac-12 -- as well as many of their ACC and Big 12 -- counterparts.

I was on the sideline of Baylor's 63-34 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday. The speed at which the game was played was impressive, especially by Baylor.

Now watch a Big Ten game, and you'll notice most of the skill players are plodders. That's less criticism than it is factual. That type of athlete used to work years ago when offenses were constructed in a phone booth, with most of the formations and action taking place between the hashmarks.

I watched Ohio State beat up on Illinois earlier in the day. Running back Carlos Hyde, a good player with great balance, scored five touchdowns in the game, two from beyond 50 yards. But what got my attention is how a slow defensive Illini team was able to catch him from behind on a 26-yard run at the end of the first quarter. It's a small thing, but very telling of his lack of speed and quickness.

I wonder if he will waver in his conviction or keep Baylor ahead of the Buckeyes...

More likely, he'll just move Okie State past Ohio State, because Okie State obviously has way more speed than Baylor.

Does he realize that Carlos Hyde weighs 240 pounds?

Did he really say that Hyde was slow because he got caught at the end of a 26-yard run? Am I the only one who realizes how utterly stupid that sounds? A truly slow back would never have made the 26 yards in the first place.

Hyde weighs 230lbs. He dropped ten in the off-season to get faster. What proved that dbag didn't watch much of the game was him not mentioning Hyde's two TD runs of 50+ yds.

Speed this, speed that. Football games are won in the trenches. Okie State and Stanford proved that. Alabama has proven that for the last 4 years. Speed is fun and interesting, and it will win you 9 games out of 10, but in one of those games you'll be DOMINATED at the line. And you know what, our D-Line has incredible speed. Shazier goes from one side of the field to the other in the blink of an eye, and Perry is getting faster. Our DBs have some impressive speed, though they don't cover very well. The difference between flash teams and great teams is great teams turn that defensive speed and combine it with power, determination and good coaching. Some of the fastest guys I've ever seen on the football field fall down if you stare at them hard enough.
Now if you watch teams like Michigan State and Wisky they lack a lot of speed. I can't argue with that. Those games look like they are being played in slow motion. BUT those two teams are also dominating the speedier big ten teams like Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois.

The next week is about to be very, very interesting.

Alabama is a great defensive team with an average offense. They have a QB that is a game manager garnering attention because hes the best of what is left over from the preseason Heisman watch. Im not buying any hype that they will throttle a very sound Auburn team playing NOT at Tuscaloosa.

All eyes are on Florida State and what they will do with their QB in the coming weeks. They are taking on a terrible Florida team, but their HC is coaching for his job. That there is nothing to scoff at. Florida is playing bad football with very good football players. Florida States top wins have come over: Maryland, Clemson, and Miami. Their resume is not good, not even a little. Florida has lost to #10 SC by 5, #10 LSU by 11, and Georgia by 3. This game is going to be more competitive than most think, especially if by some chance Winston gets suspended. Gator players know this is the last game of the season for themselves, especially the seniors whereas Florida State players are expecting a win and a spot in the NC game.

The Buckeyes will in fact destroy a bad Michigan team. That Team Up North has no hope. They don't have players that can slow down the Buckeyes on either side of the ball. They don't have the personnel to give them any hope. Buckeyes are going to end this game with a lopsided, Indiana like score.

Meh. In the run-up to the bowl games against Oregon and Arkansas, we heard this incessant crap about speed. Then, Ohio State not only smashed them in the mouth but also ran circles around them.

"Great defensive team"? I strongly disagree. They are slightly above average on both sides of the ball. They gave up 40+ to the same Aggie that was shut down by LSU. ESPN keeps beating the "last season is irrelevant" drum when it concerns tOSU and the streak. They're ignoring it completely when Bama is surviving a pathetically overrated conference schedule.

Eh, fuck the polls. This week is more important than a mythical NCG.

AP poll is out.
  • 56 voters had Alabama #1 and FSU #2
  • 4 voters had Alabama #2 and FSU #1
  • Ohio State was #3 on all cards except for 5 votes, which means that a maximum of 5 voters had the Buckeyes #4.
  • #4 Auburn is 81 votes behind Ohio State
  • #5 Missouri is 173 votes behind Ohio State.
Oh, and don't look at Sagarin's model for this week unless you want heartburn (Oregon, Baylor and Wisconsin ahead of us in predictor; NIU is ahead of us in the BCS model).

I know they say that the computers don't matter until the end, but there's no fucking way that any program that ranks a two loss team ahead of an undefeated team that beat the tw loss team should not be included in anything of importance. Shit, a poll voter could be influenced by that horseshit.

I feel Sagarin's poll formula has a -1 demerit for "Any team who has OHIO STATE in its name.

I say great because they are the nations #1 scoring defense and its not even close - avg. 93 pts (102 points total) vs #2 Louisville 11.4 pts (125 points total). They also chime in with the #3 Total Defense, #2 First Down Defense, #2 Red Zone Defense, and #5 Rush Defense. Pretty impressive IMO. Ohio State doesn't face much better offensive competition (outside of Wisconsins rush) in the B1G.

An air attack is the best way to beat an Alabama defense. They are ranked #11 in the Pass Eff D, and they don't generate much turnovers.

I will say though that I am just as sick of here about the red carpet being rolled out for them because of last season but Ohio State gets zero effing credit for their 23 straight. Yes, they haven't faced anyone in the top 15, but that's not their problem that the voters clog the top 15 with overrated teams like SC, Georgia, Florida, Clemson, Oregon, TAMU, and Louisville.

Outside of Va Tech, Alabama hasn't and won't face a TOP 40 total defense! That's what makes it all so sickening. The "down trodden" B1G sports: Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan - FIVE TEAMS - inside the top 30 total defense.
