2013 Preseason and regular polls

If Ohio State doesn't absolutely destroy upcoming opponents, I expect them to begin dropping in the polls. We need some upsets of the top ranked teams and lots of improvement on defense.

I know this is a pipe dream, but:

Ohio State might be #3. Because FSU should be #2 and Oregon's only quality win just lost 3 in a row.

Have you honestly seen something this season to suggest that Ohio State is better than Oregon at this point? I have scarlet and gray goggles, too, but they must be a lower prescription.

If I had a vote right now...

1. FSU
2. Bammer
3. Oregon
4. tOSU
5...I don't know...Baylor?

It looks like a pretty strong top-4 and then everybody else this year.

I haven't seen tOSU do anything to separate from Baylor, Missouri, or a few other teams. Clemson got whupped by FSU, a far better team than anyone the Buckeyes have played. The fact is, we haven't beaten a real top ten team during our win streak - Michigan? Cal? Wisconsin?

I think we're ranked as high as we are because we're Ohio State and our coach is Urban Meyer. I need to see a win over a legitimate powerhouse, but there isn't one in our conference, and our best OOC opponent has been getting destroyed in the PAC 12.

I see Bama/Oregon/FSU as the absolute elite teams in the country. I wasn't convinced about Bama or FSU until the last few weeks.
tOSU, Mizzou, Miami (loss to FSU coming), Baylor, Texas Tech still have something to prove.
Mizzou will have to win the SEC aka beat Bama in the SEC title, they both have a 2 game lead, so I expect to see that matchup. Mizzou will likely lose a conference game and the conference championship game.
Miami will have to beat FSU, at which point it knocks FSU out, and I don't know if Miami gets in. Plus I see a loss to Clemson and/or 1 more upset loss for them.
Baylor and Texas Tech have had absolute shit schedules thus far and their Big12 schedules are back loaded. I expect more than 1 loss for each, but if one wins out, they have proven themselves. I think Baylor is going for flash and intentionally running up the score. They have more speed than the Big12 teams they have played, so that is how they win. I think they have a small playbook, shown all of their cards, one trick pony, and eventually it will catch up with them. Wait until they play a well coached team.
OSU, I don't know what we have to do. Keep winning I guess. The schedule stays fairly consistent with 'good wins', not 'great wins'. I think playing a 1-loss Nebraska in the Big 10 title game is where we prove ourselves. I think playing up and down to match the teams we play is good for us. To keep blowing teams out (like Baylor, FSU, Oregon) means you have to practice 100% every week. Eventually exhaustion kicks in. Has always happened to teams like that. Plus we know they can come back to win and grind it out when necessary. And I still think Meyer still has 50-60% of his playbook behind the curtains.

I think Wisconsin is a top-10 team. I expect them to finish their schedule with only one real loss, and it's to us. Even the Pac-12 publicly disciplined the Refs after they cost Wisky the game. That NEVER happens. Means they truly got screwed. I think Nebraska goes to the big ten title game with only a loss to UCLA. I feel they will be a top-15 team at that time. We will have our shot. I would take Wisconsin over anyone not in the top-5, and Nebraska over anyone not in the top-10 (at the end of the year). That may change, but if those teams do what I think they'll do, I expect bowl upsets for both of them.

Using poll rankings to justify poll rankings is circular reasoning. Sure, Wisconsin will win games - the toughest team left on their schedule is BYU - and end up with a decent ranking. That's more a product of a down B1G than a great Badger team. To me, it's not a question of what their record will be at the end of the year but rather how would they fare in a stronger conference. The B1G is the 5th strongest, at best, in the BCS this year - unless one believes it is better than the PAC 12, SEC, Big XII or ACC to this point. Take a look at this:

at Texas
at Alabama
at Auburn
vs Texas A&M
vs LSU

How would Bucky do in that 5 game stretch? Would they still be a top 10 team at the end of it? For that matter, would Ohio State? We haven't played a stretch of games remotely close to that in years. I could see us going 3-2, maybe 4-1, but 5-0 would be extremely unlikely. Then again, it could be as bad as 2-3. As for Bucky, they would do well to go 2-3. More likely they'd go 1-4.

By the way, those are Mississippi's last five opponents. They went 2-3 in those games.

Against that schedule, I feel Wisky is better than and beats Texas and Auburn, and beats either LSU or aTm. I'm not saying they are a national title team, I'm saying they area top-10 team. Bama, aTm, LSU are all top-10 teams, and other than Bama I would expect all of those games to be 1 score win or loses. I think that other than the top-3 Wisconsin plays close to anyone and could win or lose. It is their style of play. They lost 5 games last year, finished 3rd in their division and lost by 1 score to Stanford in the Rose Bowl. It's how they play. Tough, dominate the line, keep it close. They are one of the most consistent teams in the country, they dominate teams they are better than. They play tight to teams that are supposed to be better than them. There are very few teams like that in the country. LSU>Ole Mill. LSU loses. USCe>Tenn. USCe loses. When Wisky plays a team they are better than, they win. It's amazing consistency. LSU (in my opinion) is a top-10 team, they have that talent, but can obviously fall to a trap game. I don't knock them out of being a top-10 team because they fell had a bad game and fell, even though the polls did. Same for aTm. They have incredible talent, and I would put them at the 8-12 range. They lose a trap game. Ole Mill is not a top-10 team, they just can be a trap team, so I don't bump Ole Miss a lot, but I also don't drop aTm much for the loss. They aren't always a top-10 team, last year they weren't. This year, I think, they are. They haven't lost a game by more than a score, I think, since 2009 when we beat them down. The schedule helps them, but put them in the SEC west, and I think they lose 2 conference games, and they play 4-5 games to the final possession. Maybe I'm wrong.

What exactly has the fucking Pac done to be considered awesome? Washington, which is Oregon's signature win, is basically NW. I guess I can't forget UCLA beating Nebraska...but Nebraska is in the B1G, so that can't be right. Oh yeah, mighty Stanford! I'd take tOSU, Wisky and MSU against their big three any day for real money
