2013-2014 College Basketball (official thread)

Lol just a shove ya'll

Not even a shove-and-stand-over-the-guy-lets-fight shove. It was a get-outta-here-with-that-shit shove...he backed away after. Whatever. Shame on everyone involved. And shame on me for even commenting.

Marcus Smart, aged 20, has acquitted himself with dignity over a season-and-a-half at Okie State.

The TTech fan, aged 40+ from his appearance, has a long history of taunting opposing players with loud and (at least) insulting commentary.

Yet we have people siding with the TTech fan in an incident of confrontation that ended in a little shove?

Whatever. As I said, the 3-game suspension for Smart seems appropriate to me. I hope the TTech fan is relieved of his courtside seats, but given TTech's history of futility in hoop and their likely difficulty in securing long-term fan support, I won't expect that to happen.

It's a done deal that I don't feel the need to comment on further, given that a lot more interesting stuff is happening in college basketball right now. Unfortunately I agree with Bucky32 that ESPN will milk this like Jenna Jameson milked Tito Ortiz's ... never mind.

I like how allegedly calling him a "piece of crap" is somehow no big deal. This guy could go out and do that to strangers on the street and more often than not he's going to get something worse than what he got from Marcus Smart. He's a coward though and wouldn't have the guts to act like that if not for being able to hide behind the ridiculously one sided social norms for player-fan interaction. Our culture permits if not encourages jackasses like this guy and comes down hard on anybody who blinks in the face of it. I hate that that aspect of this situation is being glossed over in the coverage of this situation.

I don't 100% buy that's all he said to Smart, but I don't necessarily buy that racism was involved either. I doubt we'll ever know for sure. If the racism allegation is a lie or exaggeration, then shame on Marcus Smart. If not, then shame on the guy in the crowd.

So if a player heckles Craft next game he should just head on up into the stands and get physical with him? I don't understand how this is acceptable.

Put whatever name you want on the front or back of the jersey... if some jackass in the stands is inserting himself in the game by getting personal with a player who went into the stands for a legit basketball play, I would not blame him for giving the guy a shove. Hell, in an ideal world a security guard or another fan in the stand would have taken care of the guy before it even came to something like that. I'm sure he was being an asshole all night, and not just in the moment where the incident took place.

If it were another player that called him a piece of crap and got shoved over it, it's a technical foul and nobody is talking about it today. Since it was a fan though it's national news. Why does that fan get special protection for being a jerk? If shoving someone over an insult is such a severe transgression, why is it not a three-game suspension if it's done between one player and another?

Nobody here has claimed that Smart's actions were acceptable.
Correct. I believe everyone agrees Smart should not have put his hands on the fan. The difference of opinion seems to be the severity of the offense (I believe a technical and ejection would have been appropriate) and whether fans should be able to do and say anything they want without impunity. At some point the home team needs to stop fans from interjecting themselves into the game. That's not being a fan. That's being a jackass.

You may want to google "Marcus Smart kicks chair" or check out the picture from earlier this season that's been posted in post #140 above. Or check out the video here:

Not exactly what I would call "acquitt[ing] himself with dignity."

I don't really care about Marcus Smart, who seems to have issues with controlling his temper based on more than one incident, or the boob fan from Texas Tech, who seems to have issues with trying to be part of the game, but you could at least try to inform yourself before making statements like the above in your zeal to choose sides in this ridiculous incident.

... zeal to choose sides in this ridiculous incident.
Right. Because agreeing that a 3-game suspension is reasonable is "choosing sides." Because saying both parties have culpability is "choosing sides."

I'll admit to a poor choice of words relative to Smart, because honestly I'm just now aware of how his behavior and attitude have deteriorated this season; not sure why, but he needs to get his emotions under control.

Sorry I failed to do the level of research that others here obviously have put in the time to do. :sad2:

Eh, Smart's tantrum during the WVU game was pretty well-publicized. Heck, I heard about it without doing any "level of research"--I couldn't be less interested in the WVU-Oklahoma State game. Fact of the matter is that when you assume--incorrectly--that Smart "has acquitted himself with dignity over a season-and-a-half at Okie State" and yet pass it off as fact, you come off as choosing sides.

Because physical contact between players is part of the game, and even though spectators are close enough that their words can be heard on the field of play, that does not make them part of the game and subject to its rules. There are penalties for breaking the rules within the game of basketball, but when you "break the fourth wall", the rules you break out there are real-life ones, also known in some cases as crimes. And in real life, shoving someone can indeed be considered "violence", even criminally so. Fans are generally allowed to heckle within the arena, and jerks have the freedom of speech to call names outside of it, and in most cases we are not allowed to respond with physical violence. Marcus Smart is a major college athlete on his way to the NBA, and he needs to learn to control himself better, because he's the one in the spotlight.

Of course, I'm guessing you understand all this and are sort of playing devil's advocate here.
