2012 TSUN shenanigans and arguments

I don't really know much about Shane Morris. What makes him overrated?

I saw him play against Cass Tech last year. I think his stats were like 2-20 for 10 yards and 3 INT's or something like that. He looked like the worst QB I've ever seen.

I'm a numbers kind of guy, and here are some numbers on Morris from last year. I have no idea about the competition except for what I read about on Cass Tech and St. Mary Prep.

Season totals: 121 of 235 for 1684 (.515) with 19 TDs and 7 ints.

vs. Cass Tech: 4 of 17 for 26 yards, 0-2

vs. St. Mary: 5-14 102, 0-0

in team's other loss, vs. Catholic Central, he was 14 of 26 for 121, 0-1.

first two games of the season vs. Pioneer, a 43-8 win, and Carman-Ainsworth, a 34-6 win (level of competition???) he was a combined 24 of 34, 390, 4-1. The rest of the year he was 97 of 201 (.483) for 1294, 15-6.

Like I said, I don't know anything about the level of completition, not to mention the offense his school runs. But these are the numbers.

Also, FWIW, rushing numbers: 74-150, 6 tds; also averaged almost 40 yards a punt.

This is how Michigan is supposed to recruit. The failures they had in office from 07-10 made a lot of people forget the classes that flock to that school.

Great start and clearly Hoke will continue to recruit well.

The big two is coming back in an even bigger way and regrettably with rematches.

I think their recruiting has been all about recapturing momentum. First of all with respect to Ohio kids, I think they have to load up the ones they can get and even take chances with some marginal ones. I won't disparage a commitment they get from here simply because a kid didn't have an Ohio State offer. For them, it has to be just as much about re-establishing their presence as it is about the relative talent of any one individual they bring in.

As you have pointed out, their recruting in Ohio had slipped before RichRod showed up there. For as much as we like to think that Jim Tressel "built a fence around the state" I think M*ch*g*n also gave up on Ohio to a certain extent toward the end under Carr. Unfortunately, I think Hoke understands that he can not only find some gems in this state just by taking the guys who don't get a chance at OSU, but that it will also give them a presence that will give them a better shot at they guys that Ohio State does want.

This weekend was also big for them because I think Hoke understands that Ohio State stole a lot of headlines and a lot of short-term momentum since Meyer came aboard. By pressing for early commitments and getting them they way they did, they've stolen a bit of it back.

Also... "Butt"?! From "Pickerington"?! Part of me is glad he's going north because the sophomoric jokes will just write themselves and I would have hated to have them go to waste.

Not unlike robert bolden a few years back, high profile recruit according to websites but very questionable numbers

And sort of similar to our own Rob Schoenhoft from the 2005 class. While no where nearly as highly touted as Bolden or Morris, he was an elite 11 qb that put up very underwhelming numbers in high school, and his game never translated to the college level and transferred to Delaware.

Potential is a huge factor for recruiters looking toward the college level, but high school production simply cannot be overlooked.

I don't follow recruiting, but it seems to me that the whole recruiting "game" is very profitable to some people. And I'm not talking about the players or schools (there are other threads for those opinions). I'm talking about organizations like Scout and Athlon and maybe Phil Steele, etc. They make money selling magazines and websites with updates on recruiting.

So here's how I imagine things can happen: Joey-Joe-Joe is a stud high school player, but for whatever reason, he is looking to go to a small school, not known for being a football powerhouse. They might rank him as a 3-star instead of 4, or 4-star instead of 5. Why? No one wants to read about Southwest Poopville University getting a great recruit. On the other hand, if Bigtown Getoutofmyway State signs Franky-Frank-Frank (who is good - not great), they might rank him 4 stars, instead of 3, or 5 instead of 4, because that school has more fans who will buy more magazines because they want to read about this great recruiting class they're getting.

What do you think? Any validity to my guess?

Tom Lemming would never bump a kid up a star just because he holds a Notre Dame offer. Never.

The real problem for scUM is not if Shane Morris is overrated. It is that they have all their eggs in the Shane Morris basket so that if he is overrated, they are in big trouble (Think Justin Zwick with no Troy Smith as a back up).

Devin Gardner has looked very bad in the spots where they have tried to get him reps and Bellomy was not highly rated and is unlikely to challenge for the starting job.

Most likely they will hand the job Morris as a freshman. If he is not ready it will put them back 2 to 3 years.

about shane morris, I watched that Cass Tech game. He had no time in the pocket and his WR were dropping everything. 2 of those INTs were deflections, and Cass Tech has 4 D1 players in their secondary alone. DLS is no powerhouse, you'll see that when struggle against St. Ignatius.
