2012 Defense Discussion

I really think our LBs and a solid Star position player are holding this team back from being great... Right now we're good, but NEED to get better.

For these spread offenses, why not have Shazier (who needs to work on breaking down when going to make a tackle!) and Orian Johnson at LB? That would give us ~6 true DBs on the field... Allowing us to press the WRs at the line, play a safety over the top and rush Shazier/drop a DE into coverage (like we love to do so much). Any thoughts?

This defense is not good either. They're anything but good right now.

I can deal with some Issues against Cal but to have the same issue every week for 4 straight weeks against UCF, Miami, and now UAB is not osu defense.

Not saying we should be the top defense in the nation but with the talent we have on the front 4 as well as at both corner spots we should be top 15-20 defense. Heck, that's all it would take to be a 12-0 team this year with our conference.

Just looks like a really poor coached team, mostly on defense.

I found myself thinking the same thing quite often, although I wouldn't have included the "mostly on defense" bit.

Since is the defense thread, I'll just say that we should expect to see the same offensive game plan from just about every remaining team on the schedule. I hope our back 7 gets a lot better between now and then. If not, it's going to be fireworks.

I am disappointed with the lack of in game adjustments by this staff. It seems like the defensive calls are the same throughout the game and we never modify them to adjust to what the offense is doing. I am also tired of watching our DBs run with their backs to the ball and having no clue where the ball is when it is in the air. The LBs are not gap sound and seem to be struggling shedding blocks and recognizing plays.

I heard Cowturd say that Tressel left the cupboard bare for Urban and I just don't buy it. A lot of talent and high star players on this team and defense. I think we missed a chance to get some of the young players on the field. Now that we are heading into conference play my guess is that window just got smaller for them.

394.75 total YPG
277.25 passing YPG
117.5 rushing YPG (157 since the Miami game)
6.28 yards per pass
3.53 yards per rush (4.73 since the Miami game)

Compared to the 2011 defenses, they would be ranked 73rd in total yards, 21st in rush defense, and 111th in pass defense. Not including the Miami game, they would be 92nd in total yards, 63rd in rush defense, 104th in pass defense.

At least they're not giving up touchdowns every game. yet

The season is a throw away, I am somewhat surprised and impressed that Urban has stayed with Seniors than just trying to get young players ready for next year. That being said a time will come when some might have to step aside.

Yeah, you got a point bud. Lets sit Boren, Stoneburner, Simon, Williams, Goeble, Johnson and just put in freshman. Then we could really do some complaining when we lose.

I didn't say bench anyone but a lot of new coaches come in and clean house,,Urban didn't and I applaud him for it, but I think the freshman could use a few reps, most good defenses rotate at D- line to keep them fresh. If we give up 34 minutes TOP to MSU our d line must sub.

After looking at the comments by Meyer expect for the coverage to get much tighter. He was quoted saying something like "If our corners are as good as we think they are we're going to have to have them press and not give up so much room" so atleast we'll see what press coverage will do for us with man.

The defense hasn't changed all 4 games until Meyer has came out and said ok enough is enough and frankly thats sad. The defensive coaches should know by now that if your getting murdered by the quick stuff/screens you have to come up and play them tight and the fact that we stubbornly stayed in our 10 yards off the ball umbrella just tells me our defensive staff is not doing their job.

After UCF- Urban "we need to blitz more"... staff's response "yes sir, anything sir"

After this game urban "wtf guys we're playing 10 yards off the ball!" staffs response will be "yes sir, anything sir we'll play man!"

Fickell and withers should be able to make these adjustments MID GAME and it's something that Heacock would've done. The head coach shouldn't HAVE TO be saying these things after the fact. I just think it's sorta sad that the coaches are having to be TOLD to change their style and fix it rather than the coaches actually figuring it out. I have a feeling Urban likes tight coverage, lots of blitzing, and taking the fight to the offense sadly its just not Ficks style.

Its always been keep things infront of you, play sound football, and bend but don't break. If Fickel can't get out of that mind set I'm not too sure he'll be here past this season. I really hope he does just flip that switch because he's a huge asset to OSU.

What I wouldn't give for a bye week this week. The Def is still gelling but it sounds like the adjustments arent there. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the defensive staff meeting. Overall the staff is fairly young and Fickell has been Co-DC before but I wonder if it was Heacock who made the game day calls? I'm not sure whats going on but I have faith that Meyer, Fickell, and Withers will rectify the situation.

I'm going to sound like a broken record here but Withers entire defensive strategy revolves around playing corners 10 yards off the receivers - anti - "press" if you will. This yields more turnovers, but as we've seen also allows UAB, Miami of Ohio, UCF and Cal to put up 400 yards of offense on us...

I'm hoping Withers isn't too bound to this system. It works in the NFL when you have ridiculous athletes playing the position and being paid to memorize defensive schemes and zones, but for students it seems to be too much.

I wonder why Urban didn't step in in the Spring and say "this is what I want to see"... Why he let them kinda just do their thing seems odd to me, it seems obvious Urban does not like how they are structured on defense.

If a coach agree's/is behind how things are structured they say things like "we need to execute the gameplan" or they only talk fundamentals. When you come out and question how we actually go about on defense that is telling.
