2012 Defense Discussion

OSU v. Cal: Defensive Breakdown by Ross Fulton at 11W

Another excellent breakdown.

Well done piece.. Meyer discussed the boundary vs field issue sometime this week.. I wonder if his good friend Tedford cued him or if it's a simple problem that was easily seen on tape (this would be more alarming given that our defensive coordinator didn't seem capable of making the adjustments fast enough)

I think Ross summed up it well when he said he believes they are trying to make this defense run before it can walk.

The lack of depth at LB and the weakness in Man coverage with our safeties they had better be very good with the front 4. Teams that can neutralize them will have great success against the Bucks.

I see 2-3 teams on the schedule that can do this.

Disappointing that Christian Bryant hasn't been supplanted by another young safety.

Disappointing that we weren't able to see more young players in the game, especially at linebacker.

Disappointing that we haven't learned to tackle.

Disappointing that a team that averaged 1.9 yards per carry looked like last season's Wisconsin rushing attack against us.

Disappointing.

I didn't think Bryant was that bad other then the penalties, the players I'm more worried about are Howard, Sabino and Barnett

Another 400 yard effort by an opponent.

No pass rush from front four

No generated pass rush through scheme

Horrid tackling by pretty much every unit on the field

No adjustments to stop the run or screen game

Another week with no improvement or development. In a season where there is no title on the line, and you have a first year staff, you are looking for development of personnel and coaches.. Saw no improvement whatsoever from the defensive personnel or coaching staff.

Note: John Hankins I apologize to lump you in with the rest of the defense because you are playing awesome ball

I love Luke Fickell. I respect him as a true buckeye and a person, but I feel like he should be encourage to take a small job at a MAC school where there isn't as much pressure and he can be a little more creative so he can develop his own schemes. I wish there was a break down of who calls what plays between him and Whithers.

I'd like to see our corners up closer to the los every now and then. We need to throw the other teams rythm off and stop giving them 5 easy yards. It also eliminates some of those open field tackles having to be made by the dbs.

Agreed part of the tackling issue may have to do with the fact our LBs and DBs are forced to approach skills players from 5-10 yards away in the open field.. it's hard to put a clean form tackle on a skill player who has their body square and a head of steam.

Not sure I agree with this at all. Think the front 4 saved our ass a lot today and this season.

Our opponents have schemed against our D-line with quick passes, screens, cut blocks, etc. I'm with you, not so sure that we can blame the lack of pass rush on the DL.

Well it might help if opponent offenses didn't have a gift 7 yard completion when they want by simply zipping the ball out to a wide receiver at the line of scrimmage.

I see very fast linebackers who constantly over pursue and whiff on tackles. Short gains turn into first downs far too often.

Storm Klein. Really? I can understand Pitt Brown playing with the injuries although I imagine he won't be seeing the field much in the future, what exactly does Storm add. I thought Josh Perry and Cam Williams were going to play, how can they be worse than LBs taking poor angles every play and not wrapping up tackles.

Roughing the punter
3rd and 9
2 3rd and 16s
The taunting penalty

Outside the poor tackling, our back 7 not knowing what they are doing half the time, and giving 10 yard cushions on screens and then missing the tackle, these are things bad and stupid teams do.

9 points isn't bad to give up and applaud the D for buckling down and getting stops when it mattered but we are keeping an explosive offense on the sidelines and taking the crowd out of the game by playing the way we are.

Someone needs to step up and show some leadership.
