2011 Women's World Cup

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wsFtkv0wFo"]YouTube - ‪USA vs Brazil Women's World Cup Abby Wombach's tying goal in the 122nd min‬‏[/ame]

What a counter attack. Looks like US caught Brazil cheating over too much to the right side, that opening pass to the left side is what broke it wide open.

Playing up a man for an hour and still losing to the USA....they should seek sanctuary in the US instead of returning to Brazil.

The one whose shot was saved by Hope Solo in the shootout was the one that had the 'own goal' to give the USA the lead a little over 1 minute into the game. So she's going to have the longest flight back.

Great leadership by Wambach - she was exhorting the team to keep fighting in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd OT period.

That ref was just terrible - but the USA did deserve to be playing 10 for a large part of the game - since Lloyd should have been called for the intentional handball near midfield early in the 2nd half. The legit call on the first PK by Boxx seemed to indicate that the bad reffing was just imcompetence, rather than a 'fix' for Brazil. On the red card for Beuhler, she did have a grip on Marta's jersey, but not enough to warrant a PK/red card type of call.

After the game, they showed Brianna Scurry's save in the PK shootout against China 12 years ago today - she went forward off the line almost as far as the Brazilian keeper did on the first PK in the shootout today.

Brazil was killing time near the left corner 1 minute into the 3+ after the 120 minute mark - and then decided to get cute and try to get a creative pass between 2 defenders to Marta at the top of the box. That pass didn't get through, and started the counter-attack, and Brazil was out of position all over the field. The last defender was too close to the goal line - if she had been in line with the other defenders Wambach would've had to delay a little to remain onside, and wouldn't have had as much time to line up the header. But that cross was so perfect it might not have mattered.

FIFA would have been bombarded with complaints had the USA lost the game on an extremely weak PK call, an almost-never-enforced encroachment call to give Brazil a re-kick of the PK, and an OT goal that was passed to Marta by a player that was offside when she got the ball. Marta's shot was brilliant - it's too bad she's such a bitch on the field.

did FIFA ever say why Solo was given a yellow? I know most are assuming because she was bitching at the refs

She was trying to send Hope a message.

Non-sequitor, but, I'd have been quite happy had Allie Krieger gone all shirts off on her PK... just sayin.

It's funny, but the person I was watching the game with mentioned or was waiting for the same exact thing. She went to State Penn, maybe people aren't worthy enough.

I do like hearing Julie Foudy's Stanford math skills during the commentary though (76th minute = 24 minutes left & 114th minute = 1 minute left in ET). But heck, I (along with SI's media columnist) would take her every day of the week over Lalas.

 I thought there was something wrong! I kept saying, 1 minute? I thought it went to 120? I kept adding 90 + 30 to make sure it was 120, i was very confused for a few seconds

The format was changed in 1999 and FIFA added teams, but in the five previous Women's World Cups the champion won their group.

Sweden is the only remaining team that won their group.

But 2011 is a first because never has three group runners-up made the semifinals (1991 and 2003 both had two).

I love when sports can give me chills.

Today was one of those days. The fight of the American team makes me so proud. Our men's team did the same in the World Cup last summer, though I'm hopeful for a winning result this time.

What a deserved win. Way to go girls!

It looks like the wiki page of our favorite Aussie ref, Jacqui Melksham, has been under assault since this afternoon.

Jacqui Melksham (born October 12, 1978 in Australia) is a football referee. She officiated the opening match of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup between Germany and Canada on June 26, 2011, which took place at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.[1] It was proven during the Brazil - USA Quarterfinal Match on July 10th, 2011, that she is both blind and retarded.

And the explanation for the most recent entry that still stands:
