2011 tOSU Defense Discussion

Has there been an official release concerning the availability of Fellows or McVey ? I know there was a $Bucnuts note in an article; but I don't know if there was an actual Football declaration. They were both very promising recruits, and I suspect they will never see playing time.

I'm a bit confused by the Buckeyes' continued inability to defend the screen pass. We have a much better defense than Boise, yet they somehow find a way to stop the Toledo screen. Why couldn't/can't we?

Their league is filled with those gimmicks. As for OSU struggling, it isn't complicated, Tyler has really struggled, and our safeties also had an off game in pursuit.

Toledo also held mercilessly. Guess that least penalized opponent tradition is still alive

I was bothered by this as well. I also wish tOSU would run screens and execute them well because it would be devastating against the 8 in the box defenses we clearly are going to see a ton of, until we counter effectively.

Anywho, here is Ross Fulton's at Along the Olentangy's take on why we didn't do so hot against the screens if you didn't catch it: http://www.alongtheolentangy.com/2011/9/15/2426884/osu-v-toledo-defensive-analysis. I really enjoy his insights, I'm not much of an X's and O's guy.

As a defense, I can't remember more missed tackles and poor pursuit angles.

We have been so spoiled over the years.

I tend to think we'll be ok, but this has been something that is typically uncharacteristic of Buckeye Defenses.

Could it be because under Luke this Defense is more aggressive and therefore more mistakes are being made? I know that Luke and Heacock had some heated discussions in the past because Luke wanted to be more aggressive and Heacock wanted to be more conservative.

Thoughts? or is this strictly mechanics and technique?

We're not blitzing near what we have in the past...

I hope this is all it is. Those things are fixable, but lack of speed isn't.
But since we don't have a lack of speed, there's no fix needed...

The mistakes are from playing a lot of new guys, which includes guys who have been here for a while but is just beginning to get on the field. No doubt in my mind that this D will be as good as any in the country by the end of this year.

I hope its as good as any in the country starting next week, when we begin Big Ten play against a pretty good team.
