2011 tOSU Defense Discussion

The secondary is raw but talented....over aggressive at times and definitely prone to blown assignments. However, he LB unit is as average as I've seen in a decade in Columbus.

Totally agree about the LB unit. grad--what about sepia's comment that our DBs give opposing WRs way too much cushion? Why do you think the coaching staff has them lining up that way? It seems that opposing teams realize they can consistently get 6-7 yards per play just by exploiting that cushion, provided their QB can just throw an accurate pass.

Alignment is not a good way to assess when watching on TV...alignment varies on coverage and scheme. A defense always has to "give up" an area based on the stunt, coverage, etc...I don't think the safeties played a very good game and Tyler Moeller struggled also.

The very last series OSU played on defense, I saw the CBs up in Purdue's grill. And it was successful.

I wish they played that style all the time (I know- not plausible, given talent and other designs).

Watching LSU/Alabama defense was a thing of beauty. Just man up at the line and go at it.

I actually thought OSU was in a zone on the 3rd and 12 completion that Purdue made in OT. The WR who caught the ball was running free parallel to the line of scrimmage all the way across the field, until he caught it near the sideline.

Another troubling trend for the defense is that for some reason they cannot seem to get off the field on 3rd downs. IU converted something like 12/18 I believe, and Purdue's percentage had to have been really high yesterday too. As an example, they converted 3rd and 4 and 3rd and 12 in OT. OSU stops them on either of those two, and we're looking at double OT at worst. Disappointing. :(

EDIT:
IU was 10/17 (59%)
Purdue was 9/18 (50%)

That really is not good for the OSU defense.

Crap. Should have the 2nd to last one in regulation, when the team needed the ball back. Roby made a great play on a swing pass because he was already up in the blocking receiver's grill.

Guess I just blocked out the overtime possession. :(

Can any of the coaches around here (grad, maybe some others) provide some thoughts as to the problem with the defense lately, particularly early on in the games and against spread-type offenses? It seems that the defense has really regressed the past few games, starting with Indiana.

Its been that way all year and is the single most glaring issue on both sides of the ball imo.

OSU ranked 8th in the B1G in 3rd down conversions and conversion defense before the horse abortion that was the PSU game.

Its a game of first downs.

An interesting stat:

DR yesterday was 14-17 passing (82.4%). For the season, he was 55.4%.

Martinez was 16-22 passing (72.7%) against OSU. For the season, he was 55.9%.

Bradley Roby is the only player in the secondary that I have confidence in and even his coverage skills could use some work. He's proven to be a fantastic tackler, however, which is more than I can say for the rest of the secondary. There's a lot of youth out there, but the secondary seemed to get worse or remain stagnant as the season went on.
