2011 tOSU Defense Discussion

I think you misread. The comparison seems to be to 2002's versatility on the defensive line. The quote was that Hankins, Bellamy, Williams, Simon etc. will be lining up all over the line; thus calling one or the other just a DE or just a DT would be difficult. These guys will be DT/DE's depending on match-up and down. That is similar to the 2002 D-line with Peterson, Smith, Scott and Anderson lining up all over the gaps.

I personally agree. In 2011, I think that we just have D-linemen with Williams a more true DE and Hankins the more true DT.

At least, I think I've read that right
I was going with BB73's instructions to try to stay on topic and put DL stuff into the DL thread...

Agreed.

More like the '85 Bears.

The 1973 defense, with 3 straight shutouts in conference play, and 43 points allowed in 10 regular season games, says hello. :wink2:

I said arguably...:wink2:

And before those three shutouts (Northwestern Illinois, Michigan State), they shutout Wisconsin and allowed a single TD at Indiana. Five conference games, one fucking score. The two games before those (TCU and Wazzu), they gave up a FG to each. So, in seven games they gave up a single touchdown. You'd be hard-pressed to find another defense in the modern era that allowed only one TD in a seven-game stretch.

did they beat Michigan? That was before my time.

10-10 tie at Michigan.

I not only agree with the bolded part; I posted something very similar 43 days ago:

As soon as that pass rush gets it going, you wont be noticing any weaknesses in the back 7. I dont necessarily see any if our guys are healthy but thats a big if.

To that end, I don't see our DB's as huge liabilities. We are going to get great safety play imo...Barnett, Moeller and O.J. could really have great seasons, plus Cash and Wood looked great this spring. The big question is at corner...the talent is there and I tend to think two good ones emerge from Howard (who I think is the next star of the OSU secondary), Clarke, Allen and Roby. And that is not mentioning Christian Bryant, who looked great last year when healthy. The main thing is experience, but luckily all the guys I've mentioned have at least got their feet wet.

Are we supposedd to cite our sources now? Didn't know BP had outlawed plagarism.:)

It's not plagiarism. Everyone old enough to remember that defense will tell you pretty much the same things about it and I was just pointing that out. BB73 has also made that point on a number of occassions.

Just messing with you. I was a freshman that year and definitely remember that defense.
Actually that's one of the few things I remember from that year.

If you have one shutdown corner it makes all the difference. Most teams struggle to find one shutdown guy. Seems we always have at least one.
