2011 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Not terribly so. Oregon is #2, USC #9 and Stanford is 12th. That's it for the Pac-12 in the Top 25.

I emailed Sagarin last year about the absurdly high rankings his formula gave to the Pac-10. Not surprisingly he stuck to his guns and didn't agree with me that it was an anomaly, rather than an actual reflection of the Pac-10's true strength. His explanation boiled down to the fact that they only play three OOC games (because of the nine-game in-conference round robin they played up until this year), and their overall OOC strength of schedule was favorable, and they fared better against their OOC SOS than did other conferences. Once that happened and they all had high SOS's, in-conference wins/losses didn't hurt them because they were all playing against "top" teams.

A guy like Jeff Sagarin can't fudge his numbers, no matter how silly they become, or the integrity of his product falls apart. So no matter how artificially high (in my opinion) his numbers make a conference, he has to go with it. 2010 was the biggest anomaly I've seen in his numbers, and I like the product he puts out, both on overall accuracy and due to longevity.

21-Missouri
22-Georgia
23-Florida
24-Texas
25-Penn State

Good grief.

Arkansas is ranked below three teams we beat last year.

We HAMMERED South Carolina in their house.
Beat TA&M in Texas.
Beat LSU convincingly.

Further:
Oregon will lose at least 2 games this year.
Stanford will lose at least 2.
OK State will lose 3.
Mich State will lose at least 3.
Auburn won't be in the top 25 at years end.
Neither will MissStake.

Too high:

A&M
Nebraska
Arkansas
Auburn

Too low:

Notre Dame (more for ease of schedule than anything else)
Texas
Alabama (I'd have them at #1)

You can honestly tell what's on someone's mind by their actions (and in some cases, repeated actions). Case in point, Dennis Dodd from CBS:

At least seven of the 25 teams are on probation or are being investigated by Ohio State for major violations: Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama, Oregon, LSU, Boise State, Auburn.
Does that make sense to you? No?

Ha, he even removed the comments pointing out his mistake and agenda. Ha!
We'll see if he responds on Twitter. While mind-numbing minutia is a side effect of many twitter accounts, better access to the real people behind the media members is my favorite part of the medium.

Guys like Bilas, Gerd & Ramzy slay me, while guys like Howard reveal their true character.

I think Oklahoma will run the table if they get past Florida St. in their second game. I just don't see anybody giving them trouble from the Big 12.

SEC East is down this year. SEC West has the three best teams in Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. I think the winner of the LSU/Alabama game will win the SEC and potentially go to the National Championship game.

LSU/Oregon in the first game will be fun to watch. The loser will most likely be out of the National Championship hunt from the first week. Oregon could run the table again if get past LSU. Their offense returns most of the players from last year and will probably roll through the PAC 12 if they don't have a let down.

Big Ten is really down to Wisconsin, OSU, and Nebraska. The winner of the Wisconsin/OSU game will probably play Nebraska for the Big Ten title. Iowa will have a down year, Michigan is still a few years away, and just not sure what to make of Penn St. I'm not even sure who their Qb will be.

Florida St. will be interesting to watch. They haven't started off ranked high in a long time. If they beat Oklahoma then they could take off.
