2011 In-state Players to Watch

Kent Roosevelt's Evan Shimensky unstoppable in victory at Stow - cleveland.com

STOW, Ohio -- All football teams have playbooks. Only some have playmakers.

Evan Shimensky took a page out of Kent Roosevelt's playbook Friday night, crumpled it up and tossed it aside. What resulted was the kind of individual effort that almost has to be seen to be believed.

Late in the third quarter of visiting Roosevelt's 41-14 win over Stow, Shimensky dropped to pass and appeared trapped by about half the Bulldogs' defense. He calmly retreated a step or two, rolled to his left, then flicked a pass across his body to junior receiver Tony Britt, who made a sparkling move or two of his own to complete the 54-yard scoring play.

"I said, 'That's exactly how I demonstrated it,' " Roosevelt coach John Nemec quipped. "That was unbelievable. He keeps looking downfield. He just does the right things. I can't say enough about him."

Shimensky had 406 yards of total offense and threw for all five of Roosevelt's offensive touchdowns. He completed 14 of 18 throws for 337 yards.

Colleges ‘drooling’ over
 Jefferson's Latimer

Jefferson High School senior has scholarship offers for football
and basketball.

By Kyle Nagel, Staff Writer 10:07 PM Monday, August 30, 2010

JEFFERSON TWP., Montgomery County — At first, Cody Latimer didn’t want to transfer to Jefferson High School.

He grew up in Dayton and attended Colonel White as a freshman, then went to classes at the new Thurgood Marshall High School for two weeks before his mother found a house in Jefferson Twp. He was not enthusiastic.

“I kept trying to find ways to stay at Thurgood,” Latimer said. “I didn’t know if I could do anything here. I didn’t really know anything about Jefferson, so I’m thinking, ‘How do I get noticed there?’ ”

It hasn’t been a problem. In his third year as a Broncos athlete, Latimer has both helped the basketball team to a Division IV state championship last season and become one of the school’s most notable football players in years.

Latimer is at the beginning of a senior football season that, with strong performances, could help him gain Bowl Championship Series conference interest. With significant size and speed, Latimer has already earned nine football scholarship offers — including several Mid-American Conference schools and Indiana — after playing just one previous varsity season, as a junior.

“He’s got ’em drooling,” said Jefferson coach Daniel Parks. “He’s running 4.43, hands like glue, strong as an ox, 6-3, 210, big wide receiver. It’s unlimited for him.”

Grigsby one of Trotwood-Madison?s hottest recruits, with many D-I offers.
By Marc F. Pendleton, Staff Writer
Thursday, September 16, 2010

TROTWOOD ? Being tagged with a nickname was an easy fit for Nicholas Grigsby.

?When I was little, I used to always eat a lot,? said the outstanding Trotwood-Madison High School football team?s roving senior linebacker.

?I was always in the freezer, eating freezer food.?

Nowadays, Grigsby answers to ?Freezer.? But there?s another tag that Rams coach Maurice Douglass would like to hang on him: first Ram in his 10-year watch to be offered a football scholarship by Ohio State University.

With 43 tackles and three sacks, Grigsby?s stock has soared during Trotwood?s 3-0 start. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound hard-hitting stopper has been flooded with big-time offers, including Michigan State, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Kansas, ?and Wisconsin will probably drop one on him soon,? said Douglass.

That?s what Douglass would like to say about OSU. Despite scores of Rams players landing at NCAA Division I programs the last decade, none have called OSU home since Will Allen, a senior transfer to Wayne who played on the Warriors? 1999 state Division I runner-up squad.

Grigsby is the brother of University of Dayton basketball standout and former Ram Chris Wright. He?s headed to East Lansing, Mich., this weekend on a recruiting trip to watch Michigan State host Notre Dame.

?Hopefully, we?ll have (an OSU recruit) in the next year or so,? Douglass said. ?We?ll break that ice sometime soon. I just want to get our kids in school, period. If they go to Ohio State, that?s fine. If they don?t, that?s fine, too.

?We?ve had guys have offers from everywhere. It just would be good to have one of our guys have an offer from our in-state school.?

Kaser has four schools at the top

Drew Kaser (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) is having a big senior season. After averaging 35 yards per punt his sophomore year and close to 40 yards per boot his junior season, Kaser is averaging 47 yards on his 13 punts thus far this season.

Kaser received a scholarship offer from Illinois, but it looks like the Fighting Illini are no longer an option.

"[Justin DuVernois (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Saint Thomas Aquinas)] before I did, so I don't think their offer is there any more," Kaser said.

Other schools are also showing interest in the 6-4, 215-pounder.

"I'm getting a lot of interest from Ohio State, Penn State, West Virginia, Pitt, Northwestern, Toledo and Ohio University," he said. "I've been to a game at Ohio State and one at West Virginia."

Kaser also plans to attend the Illinois at Penn State game Oct. 9 and will probably go to a game at Ohio University the following weekend.

He is most interested in Ohio State, Penn State, West Virginia and Pitt.

Moeller senior LB Kendall Walker could receive another MAC offer soon ? possibly from Akron or Kent State - according to Moeller coach John Rodenberg. Walker has offers from Indiana and Buffalo.

The La Salle offense has averaged 426 yards and just under 40 points. Senior QB Andrew Kummer (Miami commit) has throw for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Walsh Jesuit senior QB Connor Cook is a name to watch on Friday night against the Lancers. He has verbally committed to Michigan State.

New Name to get Excited About!

Written by Jerry Beeson
Wednesday, 29 September 2010 22:46

To be fair, I'm easily excited. But this one seemed worth speaking up for. I alluded to Duane this week that I had something to share with him, but I'm going to let everyone know together at once.

When Antonio Underwood showed up out of nowhere, everyone went scrambling around to see some tape and get a feel for this mystery man. Now I consider him the state's best senior offensive lineman, except for Michael Bennett but he won't be playing on that side anyway. But back when he burst onto the scene, Duane and I came back with the same conclusion; why can't he be 2-3 inches taller so that he could play left tackle?

Well I've come across an in state lineman in this year's junior class, talking 2012, that I believe has that left tackle potential. His name is Terry Davis and he plays for Cincinnati Wyoming. I'm guessing there is some relation to Wyoming's 2011 defensive lineman Tony Davis, who, if you follow the DLR closely, you'll know that Duane was very high on at one point.

Only an inch taller than Underwood at 6-foot-4, but he's a long armed and quick footed 6-foot-4. Would I rather he be 6-6? Yes. Will that make the difference in who will and will not offer, like Ohio State? Possibly. But I've seen enough that if that was my decision to make, the 6-4 frame would be good enough for me.

LB Sean Duggan names final four - ESPN

In early July linebacker Sean Duggan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) said he had narrowed his list of approximately 18 scholarship offers down to 10 schools. In early August Duggan cut his list in half to Boston College, Wisconsin, Michigan, Duke and Virginia.

Now, Duggan says there has been another change.

"It's down to four now," Duggan said. "Wisconsin got another guy so they don't have room for another linebacker. I'm down to Boston College, Michigan, Virginia and Duke."

Parris' Primetime Performers: Week Six (free)

With Kenton's high-flying offense, the quarterback and receivers are naturally going to put up some numbers. But wideout Max Morrison put on a receiving clinic in a 63-6 win over Paulding. Morrison hauled in a whopping 17 balls for 249 yards and four touchdowns.

Elijah Scott's week six stat line would be considered a good season by many players' standards. The Bexley running back went wild in a 42-21 victory over Hebron Lakewood. He ran for 381 yards on just 22 carries and scored all six touchdowns for the Lions. Bradley scampered 55 yards or more on four of his six rushing TDs.

Westlake is surprising some teams this year and currently sit 5-1 and fourth in the Division II, Region 6 playoff standings. Their latest win was a 21-7 triumph over rival North Olmsted. The game ball likely went to running back Jonathan Brick. The workhorse carried 40 times for 242 yards and scored all three of the Demons' touchdowns. Brick scored on 4, 5 and 20 yard runs.

Rocky River quarterback Robbie Plagens won a Next Level Combine most valuable quarterback award this past summer and the senior showed off why in a 44-30 victory over Midview. Plagens completed 19-of-23 passes for 348 yards and five touchdowns.

He wouldn't have been able to put up such gaudy numbers had it not been for two-way star Zak Echols, who turned in a monster game. Echols caught seven of Plagens' aerials for 192 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he picked off two passes and recovered a fumble. Not a bad day's work.

IU nabs football commitment

According to Peegs.com, Indiana University football coach Bill Lynch has landed a commitment from Dayton (Ohio) Jefferson wide receiver Cody Latimer.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Latimer is the 22nd commitment for the Hoosiers.

Latimer also plays linebacker in college and has rushed for more than 200 yards and averages 13 tackles a game for Jefferson. He also had offers from Western Kentucky, SMU, Ohio, Ball State, Akron, Buffalo and Bowling Green.

He's the seventh commitment from Ohio for the Hoosiers.
