ESPN 970 WFUN - Sports Report Memos

* "Under-rated, under-rated"...We talked to the former head of personnel for an NFL team last Tuesday and asked him who he thought were the most under-rated Ohio high school players were in the state. He said:

2 - Deonte Gibson - DE - Lakewood St. Ed. "He isn't tall? So what? Look at the length of the arms. That makes a difference. He runs great. He makes plays. Look at his film. That is what tells the story."

4 - Colin Perchinske - Athlete - Padua Franciscan. "Maybe he is a defensive lineman but I would put him at left tackle as soon as he arrived on campus."

Scout.com: Nike 7on Defensive MVP

Malik Moore (5-10/180) of Glenville was one of several corners put out on an island for two days to attempt to pull off the unenviable task of chasing wide receivers who had no fear of being hit going across the middle, while quarterbacks sat back unmolested from defensive linemen. No one throughout the tournament did a better job of making plays when called upon than Moore.

Moore has good size, and he showed he was comfortable in both press coverage as well as turning and running with a receiver. His timing and break on the ball was excellent, and he elevates well to break up passes high to the sidelines.

Moore's Glenville team lost a heartbreaker in the last seconds to eventual 2-time 7on champion Miami Northwestern, but he helped his team rebound and win the consolation bracket.

After the tournament was over, Moore was excited to find out that he would be named Scout's Defensive MVP. "That's great," said Moore. "I just want to keep working hard and staying humble."

Moore said he didn't have any scholarship offers going into the tournament, but he's a BCS caliber cornerback and has been elevated to 3-Stars by Scout.com. The offers will be coming, and someone will be getting a steal in Moore.

Solon senior linebacker Jovon Johnson commits to Ohio University - cleveland.com

Plain Dealer staff, July 10, 2010 2:59 a.m.

Solon senior linebacker Jovon Johnson recently gave the Ohio University football program his oral commitment, becoming the second Comets player this year to do so.

Solon running back Kyle Hammonds gave the Bobcats his commitment in April and had a hand in helping Johnson make his decision.

"Knowing somebody, especially a teammate and good friend, is going to Ohio University made my decision pretty easy," said Johnson, a 6-0, 200-pounder. "He talked to me a lot about the two of us going to the same college, so we'll probably be roommates."

Johnson accounted for 20 solo tackles, 31 assists and seven tackles for loss last season.

Tide snags commitment from Ohio OL Ryan Kelly
Published: Monday, July 19, 2010
Gentry Estes, Mobile Press-Register

Alabama has reached into the Midwest to pluck the newest offensive line commitment to its football program.

Ryan Kelly, a center from West Chester, Ohio, announced for Alabama in a ceremony this afternoon.

Kelly chose the Crimson Tide over fellow finalists Cincinnati, Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Tennessee. He had interest from a number of other Big East and Big Ten programs.

Rivals.com has the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Kelly as a three-star prospect, the nation's No. 6 center prospect and 18th-best overall player in Ohio. Scout.com has Kelly as a four-star recruit and the nation's No. 2 center.

He continues a recent trend of Alabama's success recruiting the state of Ohio. Running back/tight end Mike Marrow -- another Ohio native -- will be a redshirt freshman on the Tide's 2010 team. The Tide is also pursuing linebacker Trey DePriest of Springfield, Ohio for the 2011 signing class.
