TUSCALOOSA -- Ohio State bumped into Ryan Kelly once in passing.
The Lakota West (Ohio) offensive lineman was speaking with another college coach at the time, but basically that was the start and the end of the Buckeyes' recruitment of Kelly.
There were no letters from Columbus, Ohio, no phone calls from coach Jim Tressel, and no interest from the Buckeyes.
In a state where dotting the "i" is considered the ultimate honor, Kelly to this day is perplexed Ohio State couldn't even spare a stamp.
Kelly happily will bring his skills and versatility to Alabama, which he committed to in July.
Excited? Grateful? Kelly has taken five unofficial visits to the Tuscaloosa campus, which is unique considering he lives about an eight-hour car ride away.
To top it off, Kelly will take his first official visit this weekend.
"It's kind of hard to put your hands around and grasp the concept that they (Ohio State) wouldn't send me a piece of mail when USC's sending me mail and they're across the country," Kelly said. "A school in your state can't send you mail? It's just bizarre to me. They got a center from Illinois. I'm Roll Tide all the way."
Ohio State has four offensive linemen verbally committed, including three from Ohio. The center the Buckeyes got is Rivals.com four-star recruit Brian Bobek from Palatine, Ill.
Kelly (6-5, 270) is rated the nation's No. 7 center behind Bobek, who is rated No. 3.
"Initially, I thought we probably would hear from Ohio State," said David Kelly, Ryan's father. "But each school has its own needs. I just assumed they didn't need an interior lineman, or if they did they went elsewhere."
Kelly said other than the postal snub, Ohio State was just another school and that his "dream team" as a child was Notre Dame.
