2010 TSUN News (in-season)

I'm not saying I necessarily disagree with anything written here. What I find irritating is the commentators who are saying that UM dominated UConn and that UM was one of the most impressive teams of the weekend. Let's be honest here--UConn's defense was horrible, their coaching was arguably worse on both sides of the ball (I was really disappointed in Edsall), and UM got more than a few breaks when it comes to turnovers (recovering a UConn fumble inside the 5, and UM recovering three of its own fumbles). That game was light years away from being a domination.

While I agree with your sentiment, you've got to acknowledge that many (including myself) considered this game a toss-up at best. While UCONN is certainly not nearly as good as expected, there's not much that you can say about Michigan that isn't positive. Of course, that optimism should be tempered by the fact that UCONN played the role of Santa Claus in this game (that is, they gave it away repeatedly).

Nonetheless, it's hard not to see Michigan easily winning 4 games and anywhere up to 8-9, depending on how the ball breaks. If they get lucky on turnovers and shorten the game (as they did against UCONN), I think they could be .500 in conference without too much trouble. All that being said, is this a good team? Oh Hells no. They have some good players on offense and a coach who is willing to run up the score if given the chance. However, as of yet they lack and RB who can share the load with DR and on defense their back 7 is a dumpster fire. If they can't consistently get pressure (and indications are that they can't - against UCONN they frequently had 8 men in coverage and netted 0 sacks with minimal QB hurries), they're going to give up a lot of points.

I just think it's worth giving credit where credit is due: their offense looks pretty good so far. Is it fair to give them the handjob that they've received? Eh, Denard Robinson had a great game and probably deserves a gentleman's latte. Other than that, I'm withholding judgment.

Sounds like this Rich Rodriguez guy may work out in Ann Arbor after all. They should definitely keep him around.

God help us if that comes true. Can you say 'meteoric,' as in:

"The Fighting Irish continue their meteoric rise to the top ranking in the polls after demolishing a strong Michigan team. For the second week in a row the Irish managed to stun a team picked to contend for the Big Ten conference championship. Coach-of-the-Year Brian Kelly's defense was able to stifle the Wolverine's running game and probably ended quarterback Denard Robinson's run as pre-season favorite in the Heisman race. On the other side of the ball, the Notre Dame offense produced three Heisman candidates of their own in wide receiver Michael Floyd, tight end Kyle Rudolph and quarterback Dayne Crist. By continuing to dominate the Big Ten conference, the Irish staked their right to be considered for the big dance in Glendale against Alabama..."

That's alright. The following week the paper might say:

Spartans beat Domers.

and if Sparty continues to be Sparty,

The Cardinal knock Domers back to reality.

I find that much more palatable than the stories we'd have to read if UM wins. Exhibit A: Fiutak has Denard Robinson as his #1 vote for the Heisman this week.

I'm reminded of the Ho Chi Mihn quote when his lieutenants were pushing him to seek help from Mao rather than Moscow: "It's better to eat French shit for ten years than Chinese for a thousand."

Replace French with Michigan and Chinese with Notre Dame.

Michigan is something the Buckeyes can take care of on their own and their media power dwindles dramatically outside of Detroit and Chicago. On the other hand Notre Dame's grows everywhere except the Baptist Belt.

The sad truth is there are no winners in a game like this for people like you and me. One of the fan bases is going to be insufferable. You make a good point about OSU being able to take care of the Michigan problem.

I just can't see any way Michigan can stop a competent passing attack.

Blitz like hell, hope the slot dots run crazy. I'm hopeful -- this ain't the most talented of Irish teams either.

Yeah, well, last year this time a lot of commentators had already inscribed Tater's name on the trophy.

We'll see how bright the diminutive Denard's future is looking after playing some real teams...

second year in a row UM scores with under a minute left to win the game.

Defense looked pretty bad though. I can honestly say that if Crist played the whole game, Notre Dame would have probably won.

But he didn't, so screw you ND.

Hopefully the next couple games will be early blowouts so Denard can get some rest. almost 900 total yards in two games is just sick, but i'm sure he's beat up.

all in all, a good result.

Doesn't sound like he was getting hit very often today. I'd like to see how Shoelaces does against a defense that knows what "containment" is...

I didn't watch much of the game, but once when I did flip over to that game, he was coming out dinged up. He hasn't been hit much in two games yet has come out of both because he was dinged up. When teams start hitting him, teams that can actually play defense, they better pray he doesn't get snapped in two.
