2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I've read this quote by Helwagen several times and in several places. But I think he had it wrong; I find nothing in the NCAA rule book to the effect that any student-athlete who has made an official visit "must be put on scholarship" under any circumstances, even if that student becomes a starter on the team. This is, I believe, an urban legend.

Helwagon is technically wrong, but what he is referring to is not an urban legend.

Bylaw 15.5.1.2 Football or Basketball, Varsity Competition states:

In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited by the awarding institution and who receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.4.1) granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability does not have to be counted until the student-athlete engages in varsity intercollegiate competition (as opposed to freshman, B-team, subvarsity, intramural or club competition) in those sports. For this provision to be applicable, there shall be on file in the office of the athletics director certification by the faculty athletics representative, the admissions officer and the chair of the financial aid committee that the student?s admission and financial aid were granted without regard in any
degree to athletics ability.

Please note that a SA can qualify as a "recruited" SA with far less contact with the staff than an official visit. Note also that the bylaw only specifies when the walk-on SA becomes a "counter", i.e. counts against the teams 85 scholarship limit. Nothing in the bylaw actually requires the institution to put the SA on scholarship. One can be a counter and not be receiving a scholarship.

In truth, I think Helwagon may be thinking of (or has been told by the notoriously misleading OSU SID about) bylaw 15.5.1.2.2 Exception?Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. This bylaw is an exception to the above cited general rule and states:

In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient?s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution?s financial aid team limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.300 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution.

The interesting thing is that a SA who receives absolutely no financial aid, could be a recruited SA, walk-on, and play from his freshman year on and NOT be a counter.

i think you take any combination or all the remaining prospects left on the board (James, Moses, Henderson, Green) that want to be Buckeyes. I think in theory, once wind catches of any or a couple of them choosing OSU, it may cause the others to go elsewhere. Does anyone else feel that a committment from Moses and one of the other 2 (James/Green) could cause Henderson to head out west?

Nope. Based on my limited knowledge of the situation, I am guessing that competition for PT will not scare him off.

Not at all. Henderson knows the staff has made him their top priority from day 1. No way does he get scared off, especially with those guys playing the interior most likely. FWIW, the positive vibes on Henderson have been coming from everywhere and are not just scarlet-tinted vision. People here in Columbus (that I trust) expect Seantrel here, with James as a wildcard. Regardless, I feel James ends up here and I know nothing about Moses, but good word out on him as well. If we somehow pull off Norwell, Henderson, James and Moses, hands down that is the best OL class recorded in my books. Norwell and Henderson are the best tackles in the country imo (and Scout's), James is one of the best guards, and Moses has a years training plus the size and skill. I won't get my hopes up too high, but this OL class could/should be special, even if we get 3 of those 4.

A question for the BPRT. It seems that our activity with Moses picked up after Floyd decided to be a Gator. Did SF's decision provide an opening that allowed us to strongly pursue Moses?

Also, if we hit the Trifecta (Henderson, James and Moses) does the staff consider moving Cory Linsey to a 3 tech on the DL?

I've been thinking that very same thing since the recent positive vibes from Moses. Linsley seems to be the main guy who was talked about as a possible DT. I think RB07OSU mentioned that he thought Moses and James would fit well at guard, so someone switching over to DT might be possible.

I, for one, certainly hope we don't see Linsley make the jump to the D-Line. I see him and Mewhort as TJ Downing-type players that we've been missing in this program on the inside of the O-Line recently. Bringing the nasty and the hustle.

I'd rather see us recruit some more D-Linemen (2 already for 2011), see a LB transition down to DE (Sabino has been talked about, Durham, J.Turner), or see a DE move down to DT (Baldwin, Moore, Fellows)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. It's much appreciated.

I have the feeling that Henderson and James will go elsewhere (I feel a little bit better about Henderson than James) so landing Moses would be huge. Still wouldn't like only getting two OL in the class, but after back-to-back strong classes in 2008 and '09 when they signed a total of seven OL (3 in '08 and 4 in '09) I could certainly live with Norwell and Moses. Norwell might be a bit underrated. If he can return healthy, he's going to prove to be a nice find for OSU. There was a lot of hype about him before his injury -- Bill Kurelic loves him.

If we can't land henderson, then i think our staff messed up. So many factors that lead him to osu and we can't land him? That is a poor job imo.

Minus Boren, but I feel you. Mewhort is going to be an animal on the interior OL and so is Linsley. I think Linsley could be a great DT but only if need be imo. If we get James and Moses, I think the opportunity would arise for Linsley at DT, but he has played all year at guard and I think the staff would have to feel really uncomfortable about DT to do so.
