Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

While much of the chest thumping has revolved around the alleged high-power Duck offense and the stout Buckeye defense, it may be the perceived weaknesses of these two teams that have a greater role in the outcome of this game. In my humble opinion, if tOSU offense is opportunistic and productive, the Buckeyes should win.

Since I'm interested in discussing and predicting strategy, which of the two approaches do you think the Buckeyes will employ on offense and why?

A) Along the lines of typical Tresselball, the Bucks will try to establish a power running attack at the outset. They will dare the Ducks to stop the run and utilize a game plan that reduces risk in order to limit turnovers and win the field position battle.

B) The Tressel-led Bucks will come out throwing the ball and make an attempt to deviate from their typical power running game. In an effort to stretch the field, the Buckeyes will try to establish a passing game in order to set up a solid running attack.

To suppose that tOSU offense will seek to have a balanced attack of running and passing is too easy. If you think the two options above are not satisfactory, then would you predict that JT will be conservative or modify current tendencies and take risk?

I imagine that it is going to be based upon what Oregon is showing on Defense. If they are stacking the line, then I see Tress throwing the ball to loosen up the D. If Oregon comes out in a base D then Tress runs the ball down their throats, throwing in occassional passing plays just to keep Oregon's D honest and guessing.

I imagine that Oregon is going to crowd the line though, because it is the only strategy that has worked. Therefore, I see Tress opening up the game with some short to intermediate passes, maybe even a deep ball to let the Ducks know that they are not going to get away with stacking the box.

It's going to be a fun game to watch...

Canzano: After Civil War victory, it's time for Ducks to finish what they started

By John Canzano, The Oregonian

December 03, 2009, 10:45PM

A wonderful game ended. A riveting regular season ended. And here was the Oregon defensive back TJ Ward, bouncing around Autzen Stadium, ripping off his gloves and giving them to a little boy. And over there, was Ducks offensive lineman Bo Thran, grinning while posing for a photograph and saying, ?Rose Bowl.? And there were Ducks fans slapping backs, and jumping around, whooping it up.

On his way off the field Oregon State coach Mike Riley stopped at the goal line turned around, stood and watched it all.

It was Oregon 37, Oregon State 33 in the Civil War tonight. The Ducks go to the Rose Bowl. But it was the sight of Riley at the goal line that I can?t shake today.

Because he was waiting to congratulate Oregon?s Chip Kelly. And the Ducks coach was soaking wet from a Gatorade bath, 40 yards away, locked still by a mosh-pit of celebrating bodies. Also, ESPN cameras and the Rose Bowl Committee were waiting for him.

The field was filling with bodies. The players were leaving the field. And this is right about where most football coaches wave each other off, see.

But Riley stood.

And Kelly mushed on.

They eventually met at the goal line, shook hands, and wished each other well in the postseason. And that?s what I?ll remember most about Thursday?s Civil War.

Understand. Oregon?s LaMichael James scored three touchdowns and Oregon State?s Sean Canfield threw for 306 yards. And both coaches trusted their offenses so much that they left them on the field in critical fourth-down situations. But it became obvious on the field at Autzen that because of the jobs Kelly and Riley have done Ohio State wouldn?t have beat either one of them.

I?m sure the Big 10 Conference is proud to send the Buckeyes to Pasadena, but they haven?t seen offenses like either of the ones on display in Eugene. And what we?re really talking about now is Oregon finishing the job that started in this rivalry game on Jan. 1 in front of the country.

It?s a simple game, we?re told.

Run. Block. Tackle.

But what Oregon must do now is take care of business in a Bowl Championship Series contest. Because the Ducks didn?t just outscore the Beavers on Thursday, they were validated by them.

It feels that way when you?re locked into a wonderful game with two of the best teams in the country exchanging wild possessions. And you had to realize that?s just what we had in the final five minutes, with both coaches unwilling to take their offenses off the field.

The first meeting of what will certainly be called ?Mike Riley vs. Chip Kelly I? went to Kelly. And when I saw the men match wits, shuffle personnel and shake afterward, I thought, ?Ohio State is toast.

I believe Tressel break some tendencies in this game and we will see more passing on first and second down, mainly in the first half. I think he will mix in some "special" plays or looks and compared to what we are used to seeing be more aggressive. I predict to see this type of play in the first half, which I think he would like to get out to an early lead. Come second half I think he will try to pound the Ducks out and ride out a lead on the defense.

I agree.

There was talk after the Oregon-oSt game that the Buckeyes would serve the Ducks a huge dose of Tresselball. However, with Oregon's personnel on defense, I think they are better suited to crowd the box and dare TP to pass. If we accept that premise, then it makes sense to throw early. Specifically, we saw a few screens against TSUN and I expect to see that against Oregon. I also think that, being the last game of the season and Pryor's presumed good health, JT will give TP more freedom to run.

I am also curious to see if the Bucks run any trick plays. Since most discussion the next few weeks will be re-hashing ad nauseum, perhaps someone could start a poll or vBet on what trick play (if any) the Bucks will run on Jan. 1?

If Oregon packs the box it will be up to Pryor to hit a couple of quick short routes, possibly over the middle where the Bucks haven't gone much this year.

It's certainly true that JT hasn't had a great deal of confidence in TP throwing over the middle. I assume we'll see it some day, I just don't know when.

Best Pac 10 football teams, Pac 10 football champions, Oregon Ducks > Buster Sports

Oregon left little doubt that it was the Pac-10?s best team in 2009. The Ducks? video-game offense ran up incredible numbers, and they were able to win the league by two games, only the second time that has happened during the past two decades.

You might remember the other team to do that: 1991 co-national champion Washington.

Given that accomplishment, and the opinion of some that the Pac-10 is the country?s best football conference, it wouldn?t be a reach to conclude the 2009 Ducks are one of the Pac-10?s best football teams of the past 20 years.

That is, until you examine the past 20 champions. Since 1990, I can make a case that Oregon of 2009 is top 10, but not better than No. 7. Maybe you can, and surely some would, because it?s purely subjective.

What BS! Tickets went on sale at 11 am, I had 2 computers and and my brother was on his to try and get seats, all three came back no seats available. I don't even think they released any to the "public".

Public tickets are scooped up by the people who put together packages.

I went to the Rose Bowl in '97. Scrambled to get tickets and paid full price through a friend who was a state rep - around $200.

On the bus ride from the parade to the stadium there were scalpers lining the street. Going price was $15 one hour before game time.

That article just grossed me out a little bit. Mr. Canzano will be escorted back to earth on January 1st, 2010. Yuck.

On Saturday, Pasadena residents were able to be a part of a lottery for 500 tickets for both games (RB/NCG). A two year old in front of me got tickets; I didn't.

There were over 2500 people there; including children. Yup, parents brought their small kiddos (in strollers) at 7:00 am because kids are "residents" too and get a pick in the lottery.

Of the people I saw there- good number of Florida and Texas fans, two 'Bama fans, a bunch of Buckeyes. However, judging from most of the people I talked to, everyone was buying tickets to scalp them. And really, you can't blame them: $300 NCG tix are going for $1100 on eBay. Merry Christmas; I would have done the same thing.

It's frustrating, though, as a fan- the Pasadena resident tix that went for $150 are now up on Craigslist and eBay for $300-$400- and they're all end zone/upper row ones.

Arrrrgh.

Only Ron Zook is going to take an entire month preperation and not add anything new to an offense.

There's no doubt we'll see some different things done in the offense, whether it be "trick plays", some different personnel looks/formations, or more subtle things it's not always clear.

Last year against Texas the most obvious was the set of plays with Boeckman at quarterback and we saw quite a bit of that. Of course the thing with preparing these sorts of things is that it's not always clear if you're going to find yourself in the position to use them over the course of the game, ala it was just happenstance we had a good situation for Boeckman to throw that fade to Pryor. In other years we've had some things that they wanted to do that they didn't get around to being able to do. Against LSU they wanted to bring Henton onto the field at quarterback a bit but that never materialized and no doubt we had done some things designed around Ted Ginn for the Florida game, but it's obvious what happened there

Sad, surreal scene: The nanny and the coach's wife launch an attack

By John Canzano

October 27, 2007, 5:41PM

Surreal, sad stuff in the press box at Autzen on Saturday.. as I was working, I was tapped on the shoulder during the fourth quarter of the Oregon-USC game by Colleen Bellotti --- who angrily introduced me to a group of her friends and family, including her son Luke's girlfriend, and a nanny, holding an infant, and a few young children in tow.

Backstory... Colleen approached me several weeks ago in the hallway outside the Ducks' locker room angry about a column I'd written about Cal coach Jeff Tedford and Oregon coach Mike Bellotti.

I didn't write or blog about that at the time. I explained to her in that conversation that I write columns, with opinions, and I don't expect her to agree with everything I write. In fact, I'd worry about her. I told her I appreciated her sharing her opinions, and listened to her, and she stormed off.

This time, during the USC game, Colleen was hissing mad over my column which reported and columnized about the two DUII's her son got, and his plea agreement two weeks ago, and the program's decision to keep his suspension on the downlow... and Colleen said, "You've dragged our family through so much hurt and pain..."

I explained to her how serious and dangerous I think drinking and driving is, and why two DUII's by a college football player at a Top 25 program was fair game for a column.

contd

I may be wrong, but at first glance he sounds like just another hack who loves to stir the pot. Nonetheless, this sounds like it was quite the scene
