Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

Just listened to the Scott Van Pelt show with Ryan Rucillo.

This game is pegged (according to Ryan) as the Time Travel Bowl. The offense of seven decades ago against a futuristic ofense.

Take it FWIW.

What Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes haven't discovered yet is how to get three balls into play at the same time. Oregon will line up with just a center and have 10 guys eligible at any one time, then they'll shift to nine down lineman, switch uniforms, fake a pouch kick and go back to the single center flying wedge stealth formation with a full back in motion, switch uniforms again, set and hike all three balls and change to the all yellow helmets. The spinner back will play a shell game with one of the balls, the left split tackle will draw the linebackers in by kneeling and making an inverted time out sign which will blind the back judge and the two guys holding the first down markers and freeze the strong safety, while the full back passes to the tight guard who then shovels the ball back to the AD who crept into the line up while the near side sweeper limped off holding his hamstring and singing Like a Virgin. The stunned announcers will try to describe this by saying something like, "Yep, it's the old hooker and sailor play all gussied up in Oregon green and yellow and some sort of matte gray with a bold chartruse cross stitching on the flaming peacock wings. All the while, and just out of camera range, the center fakes a field goal before demanding that Todd Denlinger produce his press credentials.

It's a wide open game that the Ducks play and I look for the Buckeyes to collapse in confusion and go running and screaming "Run away! Run away!" off the field.

Damn sarcasm font won't work.

Let me say this, I think Ohio State will beat us... mostly because I don't have faith in our defense, and not because we won't score a lot of points.

That said, it's REALLY funny to read all the Ohio State fans try and discredit all aspects of our team. I haven't heard any Oregon fans say you guys don't have a great defense, only that we think our offense is sick enough to score on it.

If you honestly think Ohio State is sooo much better - that's fine, but maybe you should listen to what your own coach has been saying about us. You don't go 10-2 without playing pretty darn good football.

It's gonna be a great game, and one of the best bowl games this year. But anyone - Buck or Duck - is a fool to predict a blowout.

I hear it almost daily living in Oregon. Granted, there are Duck fans who don't agree as well. However, I think it should be noted that each fan base has those who are logical in their thought-processes and there are those who are not.

Scroll back in this very thread and you will see someone who claimed our defense was overrated because Big 10 offenses suck.

That sounds more like word choice than a difference of opinion. Many strong offenses struggle against Ohio State, including Vince Young's 50 PPG offense. Saying Oregon will be shut down doesn't mean you lack a great offense, we just think highly of our defense. Likewise if someone predicts that Oregon will put up 35 points on Ohio State, they can add a caveat that OSU does have a great defense, but the game prediction is what comes through the loudest.

For the record, I see a 28-24 or 31-28 type win for OSU.

I'm thankful that JT will have them taking every opponent seriously. That said, I've heard Tressel gush about a punter on a winless team before.

No worries. I think it will be a good game. You just have to understand that a lot of us are a little shellshocked since the debacle in the desert. We're not necessarily trying to badmouth Oregon so much as look at the strength of our team and find some confidence that it won't happen again.

Welcome to BP.

That seven decades ago comment?

Well, there is a great way to keep a run and gun offense from scoring. Keep them off the field by pounding your running backs down their throats until they fold from exhaustion in the second half.

If Pitt had remembered that, Cincy wouldn't be where they are now.

Three yards and a cloud of dust did work pretty well once upon a time, until teams learned how to staff and plan for it...but, I guess so long as you guys have a big defensive line that can take the pounding, the Buckeye offense will be in trouble if they try it, right?

Haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I can think of only a couple posts that predicted OSU blowing Oregon out.

Unless you're referring to other sites.

We're pretty level-headed here.. I'd say the majority of us expect a close game due to strengths playing strengths (your offense vs. our defense). I think many of us expect a win because we feel that our weakness, offense, will be able to be productive against your weakness, defense. When we run the ball well we can dominate. This game all comes down to whoever runs the ball better aka who controls the line of scrimmage. Imagine that. :p

Here's to a great game!

Eh, it's the hyperbole of the internet.

Duckfan1: Oregon is the best offense in the nation! Pac10 football > *! Big10 sucks and has no offense!
Buckeyefan1: OSU is the best defense in the nation! Big10 football isn't as bad as it looks. Pac10 sucks and has no defense!

Most folks here seem to be expect a close game. There are some people (BUCKYLE ) that would predict a 3 TD OSU victory over the 85 Bears.

How does your team feel about facial hair? It's impossible to make a prediction on an outcome without knowing the beard status of the Ducks.

OSU is full of bearded young men, FWIW.

The game all comes down to who scores the most points. You should know these things by now. :shake:
