Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

The only place where I would like to see more speed is in Spitler's spot. But that's not gonna really matter anyways because we're gonna have Hines in there at Star for basically the whole game against a team like Oregon.

"Feel that Posey is the only receiving threat we have."

Obviously Dane would love to prove them wrong.

Also, though inexperience is never a strength, I do think that it is a bit to our advantage that Oregon will not have a lot of tape on Flash and T. Wash to study. Both of these guys can stretch a field and IF he can hold onto the ball, T. Wash can pose problems for a secondary.

Rose Bowl: Ducks will take a stab at Ohio State's running game | The Ducks Beat - OregonLive.com

LOS ANGELES - You'll never guess what it is about Oregon's defense that most concerns Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman.

T.J. Ward's hitting? Will Tukuafu's energy? Casey Matthews' run-mucking intelligence? Eddie Pleasant's speed?

Try those unheralded defensive tackles, Brandon Bair and Blake Ferras. At Monday's Rose Bowl press conference/Terrelle Pryor-fest, there was much discussion about Oregon's speed, but Bollman knows that to keep up with the Ducks' prolific offense, he first has to escape the four long arms of Bair (6-foot-7) and Ferras (6-6).

"The guys that don't get a lot of attention are the defensive tackles, who I think are really good football players, really effective football players that allow everybody else on the defense to do their jobs,'' Bollman said. "They play with great leverage, great technique, good movement guys - they're very good.''

Rose Bowl: 'We're tired of hearing it,' Terrelle Pryor says of disrespect for Big Ten | The Ducks Beat - OregonLive.com

LOS ANGELES - Ohio State isn't just trying to end a three-game bowl losing streak. The Buckeyes also say they're carrying the banner of their conference. The Big Ten took some postseason lumps last season, when it went 1-6 in bowl games, including Ohio State's 24-21 loss to Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.

"We get tired of hearing it," Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor said. "I think the Big Ten as a whole, we're tired of hearing it."

Pryor, in fact, says the Big Ten's bowl game prospects come up after conference games.

"Even some of the teams we beat, they say, 'Go play for us and get these wins.'" Pryor said. "All the coaching staffs on the other teams say that."

Rose Bowl: 'That was his mistake,' Oregon's Bair says of Pryor's decision to be a Buckeye | The Ducks Beat - OregonLive.com

LOS ANGELES - Yes, the question of Terrelle Pryor's interest in Oregon came up once or twice Monday.

Oregon defensive tackle Brandon Bair said the Ducks have nothing against Pryor, just because he decided against going to Eugene.

"That was his mistake, going to Ohio," Bair said. "We don't hold that against him. I hope he's happy there, I really do.

"He would have been a great fit for our offense, there's no doubt about that. What he's doing now, I don't know if that fits him or not."

Rose Bowl: Ducks' quick-strike offense leaves Ohio State offensive coordinator laughing | The Ducks Beat - OregonLive.com

LOS ANGELES - Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman, charged with outscoring Oregon, had to chuckle at the Ducks' average time of possession this season: 26 minutes and 58 seconds. That, of course, is quite a bit less than half a football game.

"I see the opponents have a nearly seven-minute advantage in time of possession, which, I see, in their case, means absolutely nothing," Bollman said. "When they strike, they strike quick and fast and long."

The Ducks come into the Rose Bowl ranked 115th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in time of possession. Only Florida International, Michigan, Washington State, Vanderbilt and -- that other Kelly-coached team -- Cincinnati have kept the ball less.

I've come to the conclusion that John Hunt is complete moron.

Rose Bowl: Oregon's Nick Aliotti convinced of one thing - he's not going to change | The Ducks Beat - OregonLive.com

LOS ANGELES - Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti said Ohio State is "probably a good pound-the-ball type of football team," but that he doesn't really know them. He knows himself, though.

"Nick Aliotti's not going to change -- we have to stop the run," he said.

Aliotti seemed a bit amused at all the uncertainty surrounding Ohio State's offensive intentions, with hints that the Buckeyes will open things up for quarterback Terrelle Pryor or that they might toss in some wrinkles with the month of preparation time.

"They're going to try to smash mouth us. They're going to try to play-action. They're going to try to get Terrelle Pryor on the perimeter. They're going to give the ball to their running backs. They're going to make safe throws. They're going to play football."

Our LB's are anything but 'slow'....

I would agree that Homan and Rolle can get to the edge as quick as anyone but I can't say the same thing for others in the LB group. There have been a number of times this year where the only weak link on D was a mismatch with one of the LB's on a TE or RB. The final drive of the SC game really comes to mind here.

Bollman is old-school. He would very much like to run the ball right at the Ducks, even with Pryor's well-documented skills in the open field. He has put 15 offensive linemen in the NFL in his nine years in Columbus. The words "five yards and a cloud of dust'' were heard at Monday's press gathering, as was "frozen tundra.''

Bollman sounded very much like a man intent on running downhill and leaving the flashy stuff to the folks from Eugene.

The successes of Stanford and Purdue - teams that combined for 49 first downs and 89 points against Oregon - aren't lost on Bollman. Those teams brought pulling guards, tight ends and fullbacks right at the middle of the Ducks' defense.

"As a D-tackle, I love that kind of game,'' Bair said. "I love it when they try to run it right us.'' - The DucksBeat. Oregonlive.com

Well, then, you are going to be a very happy camper come Jan. 1st...

The quote's from Biddle. I've seen Big Ten and Big 12 teams repeatedly think they can just run over "soft" PAC-10 defenses and fail to do so due to predictability.

But it does work. Texas' so called "#1 rush defense" was getting pounded before Beanie's concussion and it was keeping Texas' O off the field. Oregon's D is soft. It's fast but you can run it straight at them.

Normally I'm on the "open it up more" bandwagon but I will be fine with old school smashmouth football for this game(unless it's just flat out not working).
