Eh...I feel they may have been similar in rankings but I just feel they have got more legit talent the last couple years.
Samuel. Green. Moreno. Jones. Stafford. King. Hebron. Byrd. Miller. Johnson. Lumpkin. They've had a lot of talent in past seasons.

2002 #3
2003 #6
2004 #6
2005 #4
2006 #4 scout, #10 rivals
2007 #9
2008 #7
2009 #6

They need to change their track record of how they utilize that talent before they deserve predictions of being peerless in the SEC and maybe the nation.

Texas' 1 conference title this decade says otherwise.

Well, that's partly because of Mack Brown and partly because OU has had great success recruiting DL from Texas. Granger, McCoy and McFarland are all five star DTs that OU recruited from Texas in the past three years, not to mention other guys like English and Beal, who are also cornerstones of the DL.

We've had quite a few balanced classes over the Tressel era. What's been lacking is a dominant DL.

Not really. Other than '02, '08, and '09, most of those classes had major holes. QB is still far and away the most important position in football. scUM had the best front 7 in football in '06 but their secondary killed them. Where did all those 5* DL get LSU last year? NC teams tend to have very few flaws. A great DL isn't enough.

Always easy to speak in hindsight. On paper, the class of '04, '05 and '06 were extremely balanced from the breakdown of positions.

scUM did not have the best front 7 in football, no idea where that came from. They were blasted away by OSU in the trenches early and often, and that OSU OL is hardly considered anything special.

Gotts agree with JTbeliever, the teams winning the NC or contending for it always have a dominant DL. Sure you have to be at least good on offense and your other positions but the DL is the most crucial position to win it all, especially the interior line imo. Look at '02...though there were many factors involved, our DL getting pressure on Dorsey that he had't had all year was key.

They gave up an average of 43 rushing yards per game and 1.9 ypc. That is almost unheard of in modern football. They definitely had the best front 7 I saw that year.

DL is very important and NC teams this decade have had good DL's. Just disagreeing with the DL recruiting being the sign of a future NC winner.

DL play is definitely a priority in winning NC and BCS games in general. We got dominated up front in both the NC games we lost, flat out! And the DL play from UF is what caused Bradford to make so many mistakes. Our lack of a solid or even a consistent pass rush is what have made our teams so lackluster out of conference. The most successful teams have very good DL play.

The most consistent teams have also have good QB play, WR play, DB play... etc.

DL play is obviously of the utmost importance, but it's not like "the team with the best DL recruiting will win the NCG".

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Calif. WRs highlight additions to the Rivals250

Rivals250

Of note:

101. Fre'Shad Hunter
109. Matt James
114. Dyajuan Lewis

The 6-foot-3, 191-pound wide receiver from Indianapolis picked up his first scholarships on the summer camp circuit after running better than a 4.5-second time in the 40-yard dash and impressing coaches with his route running and hands.

118. Spencer Ware

Exploded onto the scene as a sophomore when he dominated the Greater Miami Conference by passing for 2,200 yards, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and combining for 39 total touchdowns. It was more of the same for him in 2008, he completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ware also ran the ball for 741 yards and another 15 touchdowns. While he plays quarterback for Princeton, he’ll likely be a running back in college.

141. Andrew Donnal
160. Zach Zwinak
165. Braylon Heard
173. Dior Mathis
189. Kenny Shaw
205. Brandon Linder (way too low)
213. Isaiah Lewis
218. Jeffrey Godfrey
222. Andrew Hendrix
227. Taylor Graham
231. Christian Bryant

Glenville always seems to have elite players and it’s not any different in the 2010 class with Bryant patrolling the defensive backfield. He first emerged at the Elite Training Camp where he held his own against the top players in Ohio. He is very comfortable in space and has very good turn and run capabilities coming out of his backpedal. The best part of Bryant's game is that he has tremendous upside and will only get better.

246. J.T. Moore

They specifically say Turner dropped out of the Rivals250...as did Alex Smith.
