2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

Here's Brian's take:

http://www.mgoblog.com/content/hello-tony-drake#comments

Um, Michigan offered a random 5'9" guy from Texas named Tony Drake and Drake duly committed. He's probably a corner or a slot. Informative update coming. OFFERS
Michigan was his first.
STATS
See above: stuck behind two seniors at Dallas powerhouse Skyline, Drake saw limited time and only acquired around 300 yards.
FAKE 40 TIME
See above: 4.4. Fake!
PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE
The flimsy evidence here is even flimsier than normal, so take the following with a grain of salt.
Michigan has offered the junior backup of a talented senior again?this is a virtual replay of the Teric Jones recruitment?and are taking chance on the sparse playing time Drake acquired last year being representative of his talent. This is a risk. Given the lack of attention so far and the spots in which Drake shows up when someone does notice him, he's a mortal lock for three stars unless he has a crazy Terrance Robinson senior year.
I did watch the video, though, and the good news is that Skyline basically runs Michigan's offense. If you're going to make an offer based on just film it's nice if you don't have to make a lot of assumptions. Here there are none: the coaches have seen Drake do exactly what they'll ask him to do. They unearthed Slaton and Reynaud and so forth and so on and this is one of those positions at which Michigan can take a guy others might not get a lot of use out of and turn him into a pain-dealing jet engine.
I'm much less bothered about random three star running backs like Drake and Vincent Smith than I am about linebackers and defensive backs who don't have an unusual system to dominate in. If Michigan's staff gets leeway in their recruiting at one spot, it's tailback. They've earned it.

The comments section isn't providing much.

You guys don't get it. Look at it this way: any player between the flankers could theoretically be in the slot. Why recruit big, ugly, slow guys when you could put mini-me receivers there? You wouldn't put a fat dude in the slot, it's just common sense.

I love it.

it is quite enjoyable, but I'll tell you two people who aren't enjoying this

it is hilarious beyond description watching tsun spiral into slot receiver oblivion, but if it goes on for too long the greatest rivalry in the history of sports will be a distant memory, that is something I won't enjoy seeing

I guess I hadf orgotten that WVU's offense was COMPLETELY dependent on Jollah and Reynaud.

Now all of these slot receiver offers make sense.....you cannot run D-Rods offense without spectacular players like Jollah and Reynaud.

Absolutely critical to the success of this system....need receivers....lots of them.

Yep.

You know, that's all well and good that they're recruiting to fit their system and can sometimes get away with lesser known/lower rated recruits, but that is still m*ch*g*n, isn't it? Shouldn't Dick be able to get some of the better spread backs/slots out there? They all said he was going to lay the smackdown on the recruiting path and so far I see him taking guys that have less than impressive offer sheets. He's grinding it out against middle of the road southern and Big-10 teams...actually sometimes less.

I can assure you that while the man on the right is spinning in his grave, the gentleman on the left is chucking in his casket...

from everything I've read, the challenge of beating a great opponent (or any challenge for that matter) is what drove Woody to be the man that he was, without a challenge to overcome I don't think Woody would have been very happy

so while Woody's passion was to crush tsun, I think he derived a much greater amount of pleasure out of crushing a great tsun team rather than a terrible one

people say to enjoy this period and consider it payback for the 90's, but what made the 90's so painful was how good the Buckeyes were each year and yet they still were not able to win that one game, so wouldn't the revenge be so much sweeter if tsun fielded great teams and still lost every year to us?

once again, I am not saying that I don't enjoy the hell out of what is going on up north right now, I just think it would be infinitely more enjoyable to beat an 11-0 team every year rather than a 3-8 one, it would keep the greatest rivalry ever alive and kicking and it would be infinitely more soul crushing to any jackass unfortunate enough to call themself a fan of the maize and blue
