Honestly I think the future of Michigan football is going to be shaky for a while. There are just some programs that do things their way, and when the combination is shaken up to much, it ends up failing more than succeeding. I don't think that this style of offense can be extremely successful in the Big Ten: the only time that it was successful in the Big East was when VT and Miami abdicated. But more importantly, this defensive style of recruiting is leaving much to be desired. Michigan is a traditional school...to fully reach its potential I feel it needs a traditional (yet innovative) coach. You can't abandon what made you. I-formation, hog-mollies, big receivers, and solid defenders are what made Michigan. More importantly, they're what made Michigan the recruiting hotspot that it was/is. The elite scatbacks and 5'10 wideouts will not want to go there. Just look at the biggest recruiting pickup recently: Will Cambell. Those are the types of players that Michigan attracts. I would be much more worried if Les Miles was coach, but our good friend Herbie averted that for me.

In time, I expect a good to great offense. I expect Gardner to be a lot to handle in 3-4 years. I think Tate will be a good technician until then, if he can stay healthy. I have big questions about the defense. There are some individual good talents, but the depth and quality is not where it needs to be across the board. If they can enhance their defensive personnel, they can be a top-5 squad more often than not.

If not, then he'll be a failure by the standards set by UM fans. Under Carr, they were usually a top-3 squad, played in january and contended for the b10 title every year. When OSU tilted the scales in the rivalry and were reaching NC games instead of rose bowls, it changed the stakes.

The mantra became that RR needed to tear down the UM program to build it back up. Drastic change was needed, but I'm not sure the defense benefited from the renovation.




If the defensive players they have now can make UM a good to very good defense, then RR will turn UM into a very venerable squad. If they still have holes on that 2010 defense after bringing in the 08, 09 & 10 classes... then UM's offense will have to be fairly great to carry the squad. Recruiting should improve for 2011 recruits if the defensive product at UM improves. Even if it does not, the continuity on staff should increase their success on recruiting defenders.

However, 2011 recruits (the year after gardner) cannot fix RR's program. If it's up to speed by 2010, then he should get a number of years at UM to develop his spread attack. If they are still struggling in 2010, there may not be time for 2011 recruits to make an impact, and in many cases, the same holds true for many 2010 kids. The silver lining is that Bill Martin will stick with RR as long as possible, as he will likely be his lasting legacy, good or bad.

One must seriously ask how much the auto collapse will impact Catholepistemiad in the long term.

How many OSU grads are working lucrative jobs in the Columbus area? A former Buckeye player can write his own ticket in Columbus.

Same thing is true of Catholepistemiad and Detroit.

Except they are getting ready to bulldoze Detroit.

This is almost word for word what scUM fans were saying after the Appy State debacle. Funny.

What you should say is "Our team sucks to the point I have no further comebacks. I know the recruiting isn't going well. I know RR is in over his plugged head but we are stuck with him and I hope he can magically get better. I don't think there is any way in hell we can beat you guys but if we somehow do pull off the miracle I'm going to talk some serious shit and act like I called it all along. If we lose I can still just say I knew we weren't good enough and go on to the next round of off season spin/hype about Barwis and the next wave of recruits."

I share similar sentiment about the defense. I think UM has some talented players, but they're going to need to perform. I think it's tough to judge how the defense will turn out because of these "hybrid" type positions. These guys they're recruiting are tweeners, so we'll just have to see how they turn out.

I think the offense will be fine, but the defense is up in the air.
