2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Anyone think the running game will be successful again State Penn? Of the decent teams they've played this year, they've given up 151 to scUM and 188 to Iowa. And how sad is it that we have to consider scUM and Iowa the only decent teams they've played all season? LOL!

Worth noting is that Stanzi was only 11 for 26 passing in that game (Iowa had more yards rushing than passing). I'd like to think we can run against PSU, but they'll scheme to stop the run first.

I would guess that you're correct that there isn't much chatter here because it's hard to take a great deal of positive from the offense from the last game. That was a fairly ugly 45 we put on NMST.

At this point it's put up or shut up time as well. Few of us Buckeye fans have much respect for the team in Happy Valley as they just aren't that great...but we haven't been either so it's quiet. Meanwhile, I think you're correct that PSU will scheme to stop the run...they'd be foolish not to. We'll need to simply find the open receivers...'cause they'll be open and hit them. From there, no more dropsies.

I don't intend to excuse any failures of our offense, but honestly I cannot remember a season in which injuries played a larger role in moving players around. O-line and running back have both resembled a game of musical chairs. Thank goodness Terrelle Pryor has stayed healthy.

In the few games I've seen of PSU this year, it seems that the middle of the field is the way to attack with the passing game. It's usually open, so I hope tOSU can exploit it.

IIRC, TP did throw one over the middle last week. However, as has been discussed in this thread a few weeks ago, JT doesn't appear to be comfortable having TP throw over the middle. I keep waiting for TP to find the TE rolling off his block for a quick strike over the middle or hit Saine on a wheel route, but it's generally not part of JT's scheme at this time.

JT will allow TP to go over the middle on deep patterns. However, you are correct, in saying that very seldom does he call for TP to throw short to intermediate passes over the middle. IIRC correctly, against USC Tress called for a short pass over the middle and that was the one that was intercepted and taken back to tOSU 3 yd. line. If I also recall correctly,
TP threw an INT against PSU last year on a pass that was about 20 yds down the middle of the field.

He doesn't do a very good job of looking off the safeties....until he can do that don't expect him throwing very many intermediate routes over the middle. Even the deep balls he has thrown this year have often been into double coverage.

Buckeyes try wildcat

It was bound to happen -- the Ohio State offense finally caught the wildcat fever. Twice Terrelle Pryor ran to the wing and let a running back take a direct snap. Daniel Herron gained 2 yards on the first one, late in the first half. Brandon Saine went for 6 yards the second time during the drive to OSU's last touchdown.

"(Pryor) can't do it all and we can't expect him to," Saine said. "It was real fun to get out there and run behind the offensive line making holes for us.

"The wildcat, I was kind of nervous out there in front of 110,000 taking a direct snap. Other than that, it was a fun game."

I was very pleased to see the I-formation run game doing well against these guys(PSU).(We did run some spread, also) And it looked like the whole offense were enjoying the power running. I think we have found an identity and I like it going forward. Zach Boren has been a major find. He can really help this whole offense.

More Wildcat please, and with some WR motion too

I know, I'm greedy...
The wildcat is one formation that I thought we wouldn't see. Really no need since TP is, potentially, our fastest player and can throw. If anything, we would run the same motion from Ray or Posey, with Saine or Herron in the backfield and run a triple option off that. But hey, more to prepare for I guess.

I was about to ask the same thing regarding the wildcat; why? However, after seeing Pryor on the bike and the reports of his ankle, knee, turf toe, or whatever it is that's bothering him, calling #2 to run it up the middle might not be as effective as it use to be. If there's one play that's almost completely disappeared, it's the 5-WR set that we run Pryor out of.

I like the Wildcat. With Saine. Why not? It takes less time to develop than a handoff. Especially on first and second down when we keep running it up the gut and everyone knows what is coming. It's effective if run correctly.
