2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Too early to make Keith Byars comparisons, but seeing #41 rumble up the middle was gratifying. Seeing our fullbacks whiff on quite a few blocks this season, do we see Jermil Martin being used along a healthy Boom or Saine?

This is an interesting thought. A FB who can also run the ball and be used in short yardage would be very nice. I wonder what kind of blocker Martin is. I don't think we'll see it, but it would be cool to see Martin AND Saine in the backfield at the same time.

Fullhouse T on the goal line?

After making a list of observations regarding the offense vs. Minnie, I am encouraged that there were more positive than negative.

As was discussed (and predicted) prior to the game, TP ran a lot more plays under center. The running game improved and TP was able to sell the play-action better in that formation.

Despite their hardships as a unit (injuries, health, criticism), the O-line did a pretty good job in pass protection. TP actually went through several reads a few times and the line helped make that possible.

Speaking of the QB, his mechanics seemed better on average (e.g., stepping into his throws). However, consistency/accuracy is still an issue. He made a few tremendous throws and a few that were just plain bad. Overall, his decision-making seemed better and perhaps that becomes easier with better protection and playing with a lead.

While hindsight may suggest that the Bucks gave up on the running game too soon against Purdue, it was good to see a balanced attack that didn't forsake the run and allow the defense to dictate what the offense can and can't do.

Despite the fact that I still hope for more sustained drives, improvement in the (short/quick) passing game, greater success in the red-zone, and better blocking by the receivers, the glass is definitely half-full for tOSU offense.
comparison to a guy who got hosed out of the heisman by a last minute long bomb tosser and was hurt, well that might be an early stretch. certainly when its late in a game and theirs a large lead...

Good post Calvin... along with your sustained drive comment... I was shocked that the 2nd drive was 18 plays... if it had a TD to back it (Posey drop) that would have been a perfect drive.

No doubt. That was an AWESOME FREAKIN DRIVE. ....well except for the ending. Still gotta finish, but that's what I'm taking about when we think about imposing our will. That is what would like to see from a Buckeye offense. Now, I don't expect 18 or heck even 10 play drives all that often, but we seem to struggle sometimes for 6 or 7 play drives. But that drive was just a slow steady push. More like that (with the better ending) please.

I suppose if you have nothing good to say, then keep it to yourself. Perhaps that explains the small amount of chatter.

I think most observers will agree that the game vs. NMSt was not a good indicator of how the tOSU offense has progressed. Looking ahead, here's a list of what I hope to see at PSU this Saturday. Of course we'd all like to see no turnovers, no penalties, a good kicking game, etc. I'm content to just ramble on about some specific goals for the Buckeye offense this Saturday.

1) Hopefully, a healthy Justin Boren will return, along with Andrew Miller, and we'll see some effective blocking on the left side. Injuries, health, and youth have contributed to inconsistency on the O-line. At the top of my wish list for the next game (not counting a W) is a dominant performance by the OL.

2) Good decision making has always been a requisite for a Tressel-coached QB. Here's hoping that TP throws it away or finds a running lane when an open receiver is not available.

3) Assuming that PSU will sell out to stop the run and seek to stop TP from getting outside, regardless, I hope that the Bucks don't abandon the running game too soon. I hope Saine and Boom are healthy and the RBs have a good week of practice.

4) While Posey is clearly TP's go-to guy, here's hoping that Sanz, Small, Carter and Ballard all get some meaningful catches. There are times when Duron looks like the best player on the field. Maybe this could be the moment he has a 100-yard game and 2 TDs.

5) Effectiveness on 2nd down would be a beautiful thing to see. I'm hoping for the kind of execution that avoids too many third-and-longs.

There's likely an endless list of things we'd all like to see this Saturday. I'm just sharing some musings to encourage some dialogue.

Why do i get the felling that we may be seeing a whole style of different offenses in these last 3 games from Jim Tressel and the gang. Even in his
press conferences you don't know what will come out of his mouth. I sure
wouldn't want to get in a poker game with him. I really think he has something up his sleeve in getting ready for Penn State. Lets look at 2 years ago when Ohio State was very decisive in the win at Happy Valley. I did not expect them to play that well. I was hoping for a win...... but that was puzzeling to me how to see how well they played then. I hope we can see an encore for sure.

I'd love to see all sorts of great things offensively from this team on Saturday. But my gut is telling me this will be similar to last year. Lots of defense and conservative offense. Low scoring.

One thing I'd love to see out of our offense though is the fake throw to one side and then come back to the other side of the field. TP seems to lock onto receivers so having him look and fake to one side and throwing back to the other would break a tendency.

Calvin....I agree that second will be big. 3rd and long is not a good situation for TP and this offense. I'm very interested in seeing what Tress decides to do when first down is an incompletion. We've got to get good yardage on second to have manageable third downs.

Anyone think the running game will be successful again State Penn? Of the decent teams they've played this year, they've given up 151 to scUM and 188 to Iowa. And how sad is it that we have to consider scUM and Iowa the only decent teams they've played all season? LOL!
