2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Not sure if you could tell on TV, but there were a number of plays today where Terrelle went through a number of reads. Now, he didn't always hit them afterwards, but this was a big step forward. There were still tunnel vision plays, but there was a lot to like as Terrelle continued to mature today.

Great performance by the line today, though I would expect us to be able to handle the Minnesota DL. Running lanes were wide open and Pryor had time to throw. Notice how the only times we had a consistent drives were generally when we went forward on first downs. We did a good job of getting positive yards on first down and not allowing the defense to pin their ears back on 2nd/3rd and 10+ yard situations. I thought all aspects of the offense were pretty encouraging overall. The key is that the offense doesn't take any steps back the next couple weeks, as they have been throughout the season. We are young but we just need to establish some consistency and confidence.

I could tell. He put up like the #8 total yardage day for any player in OSU history, his 2nd top 10 finish in that category. He might own the top 15 before his time here is over.

So true. His demeanor was night and day from last week. This is the best TP I've seen in the Shoe this year, no doubt.

In case any are interested, ESPNU has Fresno State at New Mexico State.
NMSU gave up 500ytds to Lousiana Tech(that's Tech, not LSU) last week.
NMSU has no offense and is coached by former UCLA coach DeWayne Walker. Yikes!

question to the people who were at the game today. when the pocket broke down and pryor scrambled, did the wr's finish out their routes? did they break down and run the proper comeback routes? or did they quit on the play? i know posey did it right once on the completion where he lost 3 yrds. but i recall 1 pass play where pryor broke the pocket and bought himself a lot of time and ended up throwing it away. the thing that caught my attention was he threw the ball 20 yrds downfield before it went out of bounds. i didn't see a single buckeye as the camera panned to follow the ball. just surprised me to see absolutely nobody on that side of the field.

I wasn't able to see the game yesterday and am glad to see the positive comments in this thread.

This morning I tried to get perspective on Ohio State's offensive performance. I think Buckeye fans can take away from encouragement, but should keep this win in perspective.

I was a bit surprised to find that, even after yesterday, the NCAA ranks Ohio State #78 in total offense and #100 in passing offense. The most flattering rank is given by the computers, which generally rank Ohio State's offense between #60 and #80.

There is a lot of encouragement on this board about the offense after yesterday's performance, especially about Pryor's performance. My enthusiasm was tempered when I realized that Pryor's 239 yards passing was just 10 yards more than the 229 yards Minny has given up on average this year. Also, Minny ranks #95 in total defense, far below Indiana, and #75 against the pass.

I am very encouraged that Ohio State won the time of possession battle yesterday. Ohio State converted 7/14 third downs and 1/1 fourth downs. For the first time in a long time, Ohio State's second possession produced a sustained drive that chewed up almost 9 minutes on the clock, even if it did not score. My enthusiasm is tempered by the realization that, with the exception of the second drive which chewed up almost 9 minutes but did not result in a score, Ohio State did not really have a sustained drive. A good secondary on the other side yesterday and the score would have been much closer. The first long scoring pass to Posey was thrown well behind him.

START QTR POSS. YARD PLAYS YARDS RESULT
15:00 1 01:20 OSU. 22 03 04 Punt
12:24 1 08:44 OSU. 08 19 78 Field Goal Missed
00:01 1 01:34 OSU. 23 05 37 Punt
10:12 2 00:25 OSU. 24 02 75 Passing Touchdown
08:11 2 03:38 OSU. 34 10 26 Punt
02:16 2 01:45 OSU. 14 08 69 Interception
15:00 3 01:17 MINN 31 03 31 Rushing Touchdown
10:26 3 02:24 OSU. 23 05 14 Punt
07:53 3 01:53 MINN 22 05 22 Rushing Touchdown
04:09 3 01:10 OSU. 31 03 69 Passing Touchdown
13:18 4 01:49 OSU. 40 04 55 Rushing Touchdown
09:14 4 01:37 MINN 30 04 03 Field Goal Good
04:15 4 04:15 OSU. 19 06 27 End of Game

So, while I am encouraged, it seems to me that this team has a lot of work to do in one more scrimmage before two tough games. I hope that they will use next week to develop long sustained drives, featuring some punishing rushing that opens the field for short passes, slants, and other plays that they will need against Penn State and Iowa.

I'd like to see Ohio State's offense develop the ability to control the clock better in upcoming games so that the defense does not tire in the fourth quarter.

A very encouraging week after such disappointment at Purdue but the youth of this team still appears evident in the highlight reel and statistics from the game.

Agreed. Gotta feel positive about it, but enthusiam is tempered. Minnie gift wrapped TDs with completely blown coverage and muchos penalties. But at least we took advantage of it. And on offense, many of their receivers seemed to have hands of stone. I counted at least 6 drops they made where the pass wasn't contested...they just dropped it.

Minnie is far worse than I thought they'd be this year.

I thought we would bounce back like we did. I think Purdue was a real eye opener for these young guys. Hopefully they can add onto it this upcoming week against NMSU and finish this season with 5 straight wins.

Offensive line seemed to play really well yesterday. I wasn't able to watch the game because I had to work, but from listening to Keels/Lachey. Keep on building game by game offense, and we can win the Big 10.

Yes I noticed that as well, as I was sitting in the north endzone which is the direction he threw it.

It seemed like on a couple of the plays where he kept it alive the receivers didn't come back to the other side of the field that was WIDE open. I think Dane might have made a little comeback on one of the plays but I'm not sure if it was just his route or not.

I don't know if the WRs were necessarily giving up on the play or anything like that, it was just that it was probably difficult to stop and then come back all the way across the field. I'm sure they'll address it on film this week because a couple of times there was lots of open space to come to for big gains.

NMSU is ranked below #100 in the power ratings. They are in the bottom 5 of the FBS. If this offense doesn't rip them a new, well whatever, then we can be very concerned about the next two games that follow. I don't mean 70 points on the board. I mean a dominant first half with excellent execution and a shutout or darn near on defense.

To progress through your reads, it's always nice if you have that luxury of time. But spielman was right (and he kept repeating) on those outs read from short to long. It didnt look like he was doing that.

I gotta say that play where they lined up in the I and Browning pulls (like they're setting up the power-o), roll Pryor out, and hit Posey was a great design. I dont recall us running that this yr...maybe someone with a better memory does..? The LB'ers were completely fooled.

If it's in a flood pattern and you need 7 for the first and the 10-12 is open you throw the 10-12 not the 5-7 even if it's open. Now if he was saying on first down or where the bucks needed 3-4 and the 5-7 was open then I would agree take the sure first down. Everything read wise is according to situations. and that is only one set of patterns. He read when the middle of the field was open, he just barely missed a couple on those reads.
