2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Well this is not great in terms of trusting TP as a quarterback.

We'll open it up more once he starts excuting. I think this was a rough week for him, maybe he'll take coaching better from now on. It's like the marines, you gotta break him down, and then build him back up.

Pretty counter-productive in terms of QB development, wouldn't you think? Then again, if we could establish some semblance of a vertical passing game I suppose the underneath routes would open up more.

Union, what power does TP have at the line? Is he allowed any freedom like flipping the play or even something as simple as checking down to a hot read on a blitz?

as of now none, he'll lineup and look over the defense, if he's in a pickle we'll call timeouts, no big deal. I expect us to run out of the I tomorrow most of the game and pound Minnesota. The OL should play better tomorrow.

I was told they do not want TP to even think he has that option, because he always tend to throw late over the middle. If his receivers are not where TP expects them, he'll hesitate just like pretty much every young QB, and wait until the receivers run his route, starring at them the entire time.

Would Exhibit A for this tendency be the interception by USC on the first drive? (Gallipo, I believe)

I talked to the coaches earlier this week, about what I felt was how teams are totally disregarding the TE in our offense, (which of course everyone on this board knows) I said for a struggling QB to have a safety outlet, is a safe, low risk play, against a team like the Minnesota or Purdue can produce 8 or 9 yards or against a Penn State or a USC can produce 3 or 4 yards; rather than something negative. I was told they do not want TP to even think he has that option, because he always tend to throw late over the middle. If his receivers are not where TP expects them, he'll hesitate just like pretty much every young QB, and wait until the receivers run his route, starring at them the entire time.

JT would rather play chess, then put his defense in a bad spot. We all know that.

Wow. It's hard to read that and feel "good" about our offense. And the notion that somehow Joe isn't in any degree more ready seems crazy to me. I'm not sure how you get to the point where none of your QBs are capable of running a play with options over the middle. I know that this is just "where we are" right now, but geez...how do you get to this point?

That pass was to Posey, and was not picked because it was thrown "late". If anything, it was thrown too soon.
TP's two main issues are, to me anyway, not seeing the field well enough and not staying cool under pressure.

Also remember Henton and Robbie transferred out. We probably missed on what we thought were going to be good qb`s....and I just don`t believe that was anyones fault it just happened and left us very YOUNG at qb. In hindsight we just had a run of bad luck at qb recruiting and OL recruiting for awhile.....the troubles this year are related to YOUTH on the oline and qb....couple that with the lack of a 5 star bruiser (Wells) for a RB and whaaaalaaaaa....offensive struggles. Go Bucks

Was just thinking, if we aren't going to attack teams over the middle, why don't we ever work the bubble screen game at all? If the outside receiver gets a block then its probably a gain of 5-6 yards which is comparable to a solid run. I've really wondered why we never utilize bubble screens as they can be a great way to keep a defense on its toes, as well as an extension of the run game.

according to what i (thought i) heard from Pryor last week, the play comes in, and it's Pryor's job to look at D and determine which side it's going to. that includes which side runs which routes in the passing game...

maybe i was mistaken...

because we're Ohio State. we run the ball up the middle and throw deep.
we don't do any of that gimmick shit that lesser teams use successfully against us.

:smash:

(in all fairness, there's not much chance of ever running the gimmick shit when they can't execute the base stuff)

:smash: :smash:

i still say the lack of execution is due to less than stellar coaching. a history or math teacher's performance can be assessed pretty easily by looking at how his/her students perform. IMHO, the same goes for coaching

Wow...Gameday putting up the OSU offensive numbers over the last 3 years and there are lots of "90ths" and "106ths" up there. That's pretty hard to imagine when you're recruiting as well as JT does it.

And yes, I know our winning percentage. I don't need it posted ad nauseum, as though that means the offensive production - or lack thereof - cannot be questioned. I also know the winning percentage the last 6 times OSU faced a top ten team. The offensive output in those games?

3
6
15 (2 on defense)
14 (7 on special teams)
18
24 (7 on defense)

That's less than 11 ppg from the offense. That's a problem.

...and it is gameday, so save the usual complaints for later.

No complaints today. Saw some different looks/formations and the execution was better. Hope to see it continue.

Yup... Only negative comment I'll say for the week as far as offensively goes is Although Posey had a whale of a game i've noticed he does drop his share.

For sure some of his drops today were good plays by the defense too... It was encouraging to see Pryor RUN with conviction thats for sure. It seemed like when his 1st or 2nd option wasn't there he was GONE. Which is what we need when y ou have someoen who can run as well as Pryor. It was also very good to see him stay calm when scrambling around and square those shoulders and let it fly when he did throw it on the move. I thought he made pretty good decisions all day. He didn't really throw any miracle passes today and seemed to have a purpose to where he was throwing. His INT he stared the reciever down the whole way but well it happens. Now Pryor just needs to take this and build to next week. If he can play strong next week he'll have a little momentum going into PSU.

Also I thought Saine, MARTIN, and Hall all ran hard and saw some holes.
