2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Yes I noticed that as well, as I was sitting in the north endzone which is the direction he threw it.

It seemed like on a couple of the plays where he kept it alive the receivers didn't come back to the other side of the field that was WIDE open. I think Dane might have made a little comeback on one of the plays but I'm not sure if it was just his route or not.

believe that was posey. went for a 3 yrd loss as i recall but he definitely gets points for coming back to his qb's aide. i really think maturity is a big factor in the break down drill and its an area that sanzo has really shined.

I don't know if the WRs were necessarily giving up on the play or anything like that, it was just that it was probably difficult to stop and then come back all the way across the field. I'm sure they'll address it on film this week because a couple of times there was lots of open space to come to for big gains.

thats what i figured. just too green to know where to go. they'll figure it out.

I gotta say that play where they lined up in the I and Browning pulls (like they're setting up the power-o), roll Pryor out, and hit Posey was a great design. I dont recall us running that this yr...maybe someone with a better memory does..? The LB'ers were completely fooled.

we've ran it several times. it just so happened most of those plays didn't end nearly as well. :p

I heard a rumor a few years back that some of the elves tried to walk on but gut cut after the first day. I never knew it was true until today. Maybe Buddy the Elf plays for us now and Santa got a sideline pass.

Not true. RichRod has them all up at UM.

I do not, but a beard like that can strengthen any team's resolve...

That guy works for the university in some compacity. Everytime I would cheer a game at the Schott, he was involved with the team's equipment or something. He is an awesome guy who happens to be deaf. He has been with the university for a LONG time. I dont remember his name, but that is a great pic of a great Buckeye!!

After making a list of observations regarding the offense vs. Minnie, I am encouraged that there were more positive than negative.

As was discussed (and predicted) prior to the game, TP ran a lot more plays under center. The running game improved and TP was able to sell the play-action better in that formation.

Despite their hardships as a unit (injuries, health, criticism), the O-line did a pretty good job in pass protection. TP actually went through several reads a few times and the line helped make that possible.

Speaking of the QB, his mechanics seemed better on average (e.g., stepping into his throws). However, consistency/accuracy is still an issue. He made a few tremendous throws and a few that were just plain bad. Overall, his decision-making seemed better and perhaps that becomes easier with better protection and playing with a lead.

Too early to make Keith Byars comparisons, but seeing #41 rumble up the middle was gratifying. Seeing our fullbacks whiff on quite a few blocks this season, do we see Jermil Martin being used along a healthy Boom or Saine?

While hindsight may suggest that the Bucks gave up on the running game too soon against Purdue, it was good to see a balanced attack that didn't forsake the run and allow the defense to dictate what the offense can and can't do.

Despite the fact that I still hope for more sustained drives, improvement in the (short/quick) passing game, greater success in the red-zone, and better blocking by the receivers, the glass is definitely half-full for tOSU offense.

Good post Calvin... along with your sustained drive comment... I was shocked that the 2nd drive was 18 plays... if it had a TD to back it (Posey drop) that would have been a perfect drive.
