2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Assuming all the XPs were made 1-pointers, this would mean:

PPRZP (points per red zone possession):
5.29 - tOSU
6.17 - Okla
5.38 - USC

So tOSU's production was close to USC's but well behind Oklahoma, which had a record-setting offense that was neutralized in the BCSCG.

5.29 is an acceptable number for an 'elite' team. Changing just 1 FG into a TD last year would have given tOSU a higher RZPPP than USC.

This year, however, tOSU's RZPPP is a disappointing 4.375. Worth noting again this week is that Wiscy's is 6.55, first in the country.

[Soapbox] The NCAA really needs to change the red zone ranking to PPP. [/Soapbox]
What about against ranked teams? Granted, we have an overall good PPP, but the whole "conservative offense" criticism is primarily based on performance against top 5 teams the last few years. I'd like to see how those numbers differ against Top 25 teams, because that would be a better indication, IMO, of how effective Tresselball is, more than the overall numbers.

I am not disagreeing with this...you are missing the point to be an elite offense we need to score. We are moving the ball, we are getting on the other side fo the field, we are gettting in the redzone...We are not converting to TD's...It is not just a problem this year, it has always been a problem for us for a while.

It seemed like last year we had trouble getting inside the 20 but this year we havent been able to score touchdowns inside the 20. I thought it would get better when we started putting TP in the shotgun but we did seem to struggle again with it against Indiana. I can`t seem to really see a trend other than we just don`t make plays. I hope JT is trying to come up with some other ways to score some td`s in the redzone. I would love to see some more throwing from the I formation down in the redzone when all the teams are looking for the run(I am sure Ballard is too). I am not sure JT really wants TP doing a lot of that yet in the redzone. Tresselball always wants the 3 automatic points. Go Bucks

Well Duh! The tough angle kicks are the ones most kickers have problems with! It's probably more important to hit the long ones!

Nugent had no problems with tough angled attempts. IIRC, most of his misses were from outside 40 yards. I think Huston did well with in-close angled kicks, too. Same with Pretoius. But while Pettrey hasn't missed from outside 30 yards this year, despite any angles, it's when he gets close and has to kick from either hash mark where he misses. Point is, if we're near/in the red zone it may be wise to try to keep the ball towards the middle of the field on a third down play in case we don't make the first down or score a touchdown, to give Pettrey a better chance.

I guess I ask to be able to score TD's more so than settle for fgs or punts ont he opponents side of the field.
There's obviously a big difference between crossing the 50-yard line and crossing the opponent's 20-yard line. And I'd agree that the red zone offense could stand to improve from recent years. But going by your 50-yard line standard, what percentage of 50-yard line crossings do you think should result in TD's. The percentages from the past couple of games don't seem too out of line to me.

Our offense continues to struggle in games where we cannot simply overwhelm our opponent with our overall talent level. The play calling is extremely predictable, the execution is inconsistent, and it's been that way for years.

We'll win most of our games with defense and special teams. We'll continue to struggle with top teams because we don't score enough points. That's not "bashing" anyone. It's accepting reality.

The defense is consistently the strong point of the team.

The offense is consistently the weak point of the team.

The same caliber of athlete is being recruited on both sides of the ball.

Doesn't it have to be the coaching?

yeah, we have been more than a little predictable today on o. i still don't like pryor running the read option. he really seems to struggle with it. second, im really not happy with the short passes. we are struggling on the right side. but other than that the oline is doing ok with pass protection. however, its very clear that wisky is going to sit on the short routes but the middle is open. actually it looks like everything in the 15 to 20 yrd area is going to be wide open. were going to have to make a commitment to throw the ball whether pryor is ready or not at some point. a simple hitch and go with a pump fake will go for a td right now.

senior check!

defense --> 2
offense --> -0

its my personal opinion that we are trying too hard to keep things simple and teach because of the youth. id like to see us spend more time lining up and attacking what the d is giving us rather than work on confidence and repetition. its a big risk big reward situation because your often doing things your not comfortable with. but im more of a learn while you burn kind of guy so...

Maybe the X's and O's guys can tell me for sure but I swear I still see something different, especially in the run game. I don't know if its misdirection or what but I'm still feeling pretty good about what we can do running the ball. As brutal as the first half offense was I still come away with hope for the OL and overall play calling. It feels different.

On the negative side, Pryor's decision making is still a long way off from where it needs to be and that's about as kindly as I can put it. I know he's young but it's halfway through his sophomore season. At what point do we wonder if the light going on is an "if", not a "when"?

They are mixing in more misdirection, Wiscy just did a good job of recognizing it. I was a little put off by the re-emergance of the *yawn* draw today.

Sophomore year is still a learning year. Remember, this is a much different offense than the one he was working under last year. He's still gonna have some lumps, but he does need to be smarter with some of his throws and stop locking on recievers. If he's still making these same mistakes next September, I'll be concerned.

The way Holmes and Ginn Jr. came on during the middle part of the '05 season really helped Smith's development. The most memorable plays that season were basically the big catches that those two had against Minny, MSU, Illinois, Michigan and ND. Posey is getting better, but he's still dropping balls. Sanzo is not going to be as effective as a number two until a true number one emerges. Carter is talent but clearly needs a lot more reps to become comfortable with the game. The development of Pryor will go hand in hand with the development of those WRs.

Colt McCoy nearly broke the school record for int's his sophomore year after a great redshirt freshman year. Pryor was a game manager last year which masked his decision-making. He didn't have to do much. This year he's learning how to lead an offense and learning what he can and can't do.

The misdirection seems to just be opening up the whole offense to me. I know the performance wasn't great today but the overall scheme seems night and day better.

Taking the killer sacks, doing not so smart things with the ball in the midst of said sacks, locking on receivers...these are my major concerns and would have hoped to have seen them ironed out of his game by now regardless of what the offense is. I just don't see much improvement in what I would consider fundamental decision making.
