2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

IMHO...

I wonder if they tried to "up the tempo" of the Offense. I know JT likes to play "chess", and has been very successful with it over the years. I just don't know if these kids are at that point yet with their execution (still making a lot of mistakes). One positive thing that I noticed over the last 6 games is the Offense's ability to move the ball quickly and get points on the board in 2 minute situations. TP looks a lot more comfortable in the hurry up verses when they huddle, and it might help with some of the problems they have been having in the red zone.

Am I crazy in thinking this way, or does anyone else see this...

The offense really needs to step it up today. Only 10 points? ...If it weren't for a Great D and ST, we would have lost. The best offensive performance so far was 38 points against Indiana.. and UVA, who has already lost to a IAA team this year, put up 47 on them. Might be coaching, youth, inexperience... I don't know. I do know that if we want to win out, the offense has to put up more points.

Oh Great Karnak, please tell me how you know that the O wouldn't have put up 300 yards and 3 TDs in the 2nd half had they actually been on the field when it mattered?

You don't have any way of knowing that. Tressel basically shut things down once we got up by 18. The fact of the matter is, we scored so easily on special teams that our offense never had a chance to show what it could do (after, I'll acknowledge, an atrocious performance in the first quarter).

This was a truly odd game. No way to fully evaluate our offense IMO. But I will say this: as Terrelle Pryor goes, so goes our offense. Without any doubt.

You don't get many opportunities on offense when your own defense and special teams keep it off the field. Wisco had 3 separate back-to-back possessions as a result of our defense and special teams. Our offense didn't look too great, but the statistics for this game are incredibly misleading.

Oh, yeah. I can certainly see the problem when you have a defense and special teams that can combine for 21 points. :slappy:

I for one can certainly see a problem on a day when the defense is a little off and gives up anything north of 21 points.

I think what the guy is trying to say is that this offense doesn't look anywhere near ready to win a game for us on that kind of day.

Yea, what JaxBuck said. I apologize for my posts, I am horrible at articulating my thoughts. And I take back most of what I've said our offense, looking back at the scores of all of our games, we've scored 30+ in all but one, the USC game. I guess the real point I was trying to make was, even though our D is awesome, they won't always score for us and counting on defensive points is dangerous. Not saying that is happening. We just need more offensive consistency.

Or it could be the youth..

Not buying it. It's a pattern that goes well beyond this year.

2009 - 56th in offense, 73rd in scoring (before Wisconsin game)
2008- 69th in offense, 45th in scoring
2007 - 53rd in offense, 42nd in scoring
2006 - 29th in offense, 8th in scoring (Heisman QB)
2005 - 30th in offense, 26th in scoring
2004 - 90th in offense, 71st in scoring

2002 - 85th in offense

six year averages (excluding 2002):

56th in offense, 44th in scoring

Good thing our defenses have been much better than top 50 over that time.

If the D doesn't score, they get off the field and our O has the ball for more than 17 minutes.

The O started moving the ball beginning with the TD drive right before the half. They had a nice drive for a FG after the D had been on the field the first 13 minutes of the second half. Then, they went into tresselball mode. I doubt Wiscy would've held us to 10 points if our O had the ball more and had reason to score.

This team has 1 senior starter on offense. This offense is so young. Changes have been made with the philosophy. You can see it. Whether it's Hazell having a bigger influence on the playcalling or someone/something else, this isn't the same offensive philosophy. For that reason I don't think the previous years mean this offense is doomed. I'm patient enough to give it a chance and give this extremely young offense a chance to develop.

The fuck kind of logic is that? If it weren't for great D and ST we would have lost? Maybe it's a good thing we do those two things well then. You sound like ESPN.
Hold on now. Everybody said we would've won the USC game if our offense had been halfway decent. Using the same logic, I think one can make the claim that, had the D and ST not scored 3 TD's, we would've lost. I don't see any problem with that argument.

The offense does need to step up. Pryor looks like a deer caught in headlights every once in a while. Can't have that happening against PSU, Iowa or scUM. If the O doesn't improve its execution, there will be at least one more loss, guaranteed.

We should just treat today's offensive performance like the Illinois, rain game......toss it out and forget about it. The offense was feeling the effects of the flu and lacked continuity. Next week they will look completely different and better.
