2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

I know what u two r saying but u also know I'm saying as well. Several times in both the USC and LSU games we drove the ball down the field and had to settle for FGs, while the opposing teams scored TDs on us. Of course you can come up with exceptions but for the most part you need TDs to win big games, and not keep settling for FGs.

[John L Smith]We can't just let them drive down the field and kick field goals![/John L Smith]

A John L classic. Second only to, "The kids are playing their tails off, and the coaches are screwing it up!"

CFN places the Buckeyes 7th in offense in their unit rankings.

If tOSU finished in the top 7 in either total offense or scoring offense, I think there would be a mass celebration among the fan base.

I will do a line of back handstands down my street if we finish in the top ten in the nation in points per game or ypg. I would love to see us put up big numbers on offense and if we do I could see an undefeated season. Everyone in the state of Ohio knows where we need to get better at and its not special teams or defense. Go Bucks

Yes it is. You always want to get better everywhere. We want the offensive to improve; however, you still want to get even better on special teams and defense too. Remember the "old saying":

Offensive sells tickets
Defense wins games
Special teams wins championships

I think that's about as gentle a euphemism as you can use there.

We have a top 7 offense in ppg and ypg about the same time you find a 2 day old bucket of uneaten fried chicken in Charlie Weis's refrigerator.

Not saying it can't happen but I damn sure wouldn't bet on it.

True. Even in 2006, I think we were the 26th ranked team in total offense. I generally consider 2006 to be the high water mark (perhaps 1998 is higher, but I can't find the data on it).

1998

-David Boston set the single season OSU record for Receptions, Yards, Receptions per game and set the 3rd best single season TD reception mark.

His line ended up 85 receptions for 1,435 yds and 13 TD's with the Bowl Game numbers not counted.

-Joe Germaine set the single season OSU passing yards record with 3,330 and single season attempts record with 384.

His final line was 230/384 (.599)/3,330 yds/25TD's.

-Michael Wiley rushed for 1,235 yds

The team set single season offensive records for:
Attempts - 419 (247 completions), 1998
Attempts Per Game - 34.9 (412 in 12), 1998
Completions - 247 (419 attempts), 1998
Completions Per Game - 20.6 (247 in 12), 1998
Yards - 3,576 (247 of 419), 1998

The team averaged 35.8 ppg

If we see something better than that in 2009 tell my wife and kids I died a happy man because I'll have a Fred Sanford special.

Tressel needs to open up playbook with Pryor

They're calling it "Hell Week" at Ohio State, where the football Buckeyes have started serious preparations for their Sept. 5 home opener against Navy.
This week, the senior leaders of the team made everyone turn in all of their electronic distractions: Cell phones, TV cables, X-Boxes. And, for a group of 18-to-23-year-olds, I guess that can be considered a certain kind of hell.
What Jim Tressel and his staff should be worried about, though, is how to make proper use of the gadgets at their disposal.
Namely, one Terrelle Pryor.
If there's been a Buckeye as athletic as Pryor, whose physical talents look like they've come straight from a video game, I can't remember. Maybe Keith Byars in the mid-80s, before he had his Heisman stolen away by Doug Flutie, then his career as a top-flight tailback ended by a broken foot.
Ultimately, Byars' injury, followed by Cris Carter's decision to take money from an agent and lose his last year of eligibility, cost head coach Earle Bruce his job. That led to the hiring of John Cooper, and we all know how that turned out.

It's debatable that the loss of Carter and Byers cost Bruce his job. Sounds to me like a little revisionist history. Bruce losing many recruiting battles is more likely the cause of his demise as head coach. :(

Off topic from this thread but there was a lot more to the Earl Bruce firing than Carter, Byars or any recruiting battles.

Wiley the only small back that was a RB. I've been around him at a few tail gatings and he is small. I felt like a giant talking too him. I'm 6 2 220
Was that the year Boston, destroyed Charles Woodson but, he won the Heisman..
