2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Wiley the only small back that was a RB. I've been around him at a few tail gatings and he is small. I felt like a giant talking too him. I'm 6 2 220
Was that the year Boston, destroyed Charles Woodson but, he won the Heisman..

No, Boston beat Woodson in the fight but not The Game in 1997. 1998 Boston and the entire OSU offense ape raped the scUM secondary but Woodson was already gone(at least that prick Marcus Ray was still around for it.)

You might be thinking of Winfield being the best DB on the field in '97 when Woodson won the Heisman.

This will never ever happen in the JT era.

even in 2006 we were 26th

Offensive struggles are a hallmark of JT's teams...along with a great D.

JT's legacy:

- well disciplined/great defense
- bad Oline
- predictable offensive play calling
- solid kicking game

CFN places the Buckeyes 7th in offense in their unit rankings.

If tOSU finished in the top 7 in either total offense or scoring offense, I think there would be a mass celebration among the fan base.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a slower punt return. Desmond's PR is incredibly painful but was an obvious play of gamebreaking ability. Woodson's was 1 cut and a slow run that was intended to be a sprint.

Fuck Charles Woodson and anyone who looks like him is all I can add to that.

I second that! I hate Michigan and all...........but it seemed like my hatred during those days was at the level of insanity. I hope Dick Rod can make them relevant, so we can beat their ass when it actually means something again (for both of us)........not just them grasping at going .500

I feel like it will be a great feeling if they are 5-6, and with a victory against us they will make a bowl game, but obviously won't

Two things:

1. OL recruiting has never been a strength until the past 2-3 years. Prior to the last couple of hauls, how many blue-chip OL has JT and company recruited? Boone and Conner Smith are the only two that pop in my head.
2. JT has never had somebody that has the ability to transform the game the way TP does under center (outside of Troy's heroics in THE GAME). Yes, Troy Smith developed into a great QB, but even he wasn't an athlete on TP's level. I don't expect us to magically start dropping 50 pts a game, it's just not JT's style to pour salt on the wound all that often, but if TP develops into anything near the passer Troy became and maintains his ability to carve up defenses on the run, this offense could become very, very potent. I don't know if it'll be this year, but as he gains experience and confidence...lookout.

People need to also understand this:

Usually a good half of the top thirty offensive teams each year(whether by total points or total offensive yards) are teams that play in the lesser BCS or non BCS divisions with gimmick offenses. They often also have terrible defenses who give up points quickly, thus allowing their offenses to get back on the field quickly, where they continue to run gimmick offenses or have to go to a majority passing offense due to playing catch up. Not trying to excuse to poor years of offensive production by some Buckeye teams, but in a year like 2006, 26th is actually a great ranking and that was an incredible offensive team

The Troy led offense in 2006 averaged 28 points a game. With our typical defensive play that would be enough to win most games even now. Tressel and staff know that was their best offense and want to get back to that production. Their hands were tied last year. Beanie goes down and the offense is in disarray. We will be light years better on offense this year at the beginning.
Will we beat USC? They still could be better than us at this stage. But I expect a much better showing this time around. :oh:

Completely disagree.

Just look at last year's offensive ranking by points per game.

1. Oklahoma
3. Florida
4. Missouri
7. Alabama
8. UC
9. Boston College
12. VT
13. Texas tech
14. Texas
15. Oregon
16. Rice
17. Ok State
19. Penn State

13 of the top 20 scoring offenses came from BCS conferences. I'll say it until I die...you don't have to suck on offense to be a good defensive team.

I'm as big a JT fan as anyone but he's human. There is just no way to sugar coat it, the offense has underperformed during his tenure.

I also usually don't buy into the hype of recruits but this is as much young talent across the board on offense as we are likely to see again anytime soon. If this doesn't turn into something we will have problems.

This post is all telling. 1 and 3 played for the title. Defense and ST is equally important but we have just been ineffective on offense. In 20 years we will look back and still love JT but we will also know that if he had been able to field a top 25 offense we could only think "what if". Like many of here I don`t want a different coach but at some point you have to improve your weaknesses.....by any means possible.....the status quo has really only worked for 1 and 1/2 seasons. I would just love to see a dynamic offense that can go out and win games.....anyone remember Texas last year....the O had to win that game....and they did.

Like many Buckeye fans we will believe it when we see it consistently for a number of years. There is no reason why we can not be dynamic on offense for the next 3 years and with the talent we have coming in we should continue that thru JT`s tenure. Go Bucks

Yeah, but I believe 1998 was better (I think anyway). And I mentioned 2006 because that was JTs high water mark.

I'm w/ Jax and have felt this way for a while...almost all of us on here think that JT has raised the bar significantly at tOSU both on and off the field, but there is considerable room for improvement on the offensive side of the ball. It would appear we have the talent to make that improvement...now it's time to see if that talent is fulfilled.

While I agree with your post, I just hope there's a wound to actually pour salt in.

What was the stat last year...didn't score a td in three straight games or something.
There is no excuse out there that makes that acceptable at OSU.

I'll believe we can hang with USC when I see it.
I shouldn't have re-watched that game last night!
