:topic:How will that affect the number of schollies available for 2010? Something to think about, but off topic.
Chappel, IU's QB, hasn't been sacked much this year. That's a combination of an improved line and IU's quick hits, where they try to get the ball to Doss, Belcher and Evans in space.I'm really please with this Defensive Line, but I was wondering what some other people thought about the pass rush.
I think against the run, this DL is great; a top 5 unit. But against the pass I think they're a good unit, but not great. There were times against Indiana in which the QB had a good amount of time. Of course you're not going to get massive pressure every snap, but I don't think this unit is quite as good as some are saying (that being the '02 line comparisons).
I thought Gibson would step up and get 8-10 sacks, but so far he's getting a lot of attention and has been shut out. He's playing great, on pace for 12TFL and 5 FFs, but he's not the big time rusher I thought he would be. That's all this DL really needs, a big time pass rusher and they'd really be up there with '02.

Pass rush has been outstanding, IMO. Navy there weren't many opportunities(though I believe we still came away with 2 sacks). USC kept in their TE's and RB's to block our DL. They didn't try to spread us out. Even then we started to get some heat on Barkley in the second half and you saw why USC was so conservative when Barkley was planted into the turf. Opelt was downright scared of our DL, throwing it away even when there wasn't pressure which wasn't often. We had 5 sacks or so against Illinois. And of course that quote should sum up the Indiana game.Usually that means that the opposition turns to the passing game, but not the Hoosiers. They continued to try to establish some semblance of a running game right to the bitter end. Indiana Head Coach Bill Lynch explained why.
"Because if you decide that you can't run, that we're just going to throw it, then it can really get away from you with the kind of pass rushers that they have," said Lynch.
"It looks like you're giving up and not trying to win, but that's not the case at all.
"I've been in those games before where you play against those great defenses and if say you're going to throw it every down then it becomes a sack-fest, and sack-fest becomes the quarterback getting hurt and it becomes turnovers and all that, so we were determined we were going to keep trying to find some semblance of a running game which was difficult because they don't let you run the ball very well."
