2009 tOSU Defensive Line Discussion

I didn't notice Heyward that often but I've noticed others say he had a good game. Did anyone pay close attention to how much of an impact he had? Were they doubling him?

Just got done watching... especially for line play and to see how Sweat played. Cam got tons of pressure thru his guy... he split time with other d lineman(they played 9 in significant time) but when Gibson started going off they had Cam doubled most of the time(they doubled Cam and let Gibson go free on a couple of plays). They ran the ball away from him a ton too. Cam got his hands up a few times causing bad throws. He and Gibson gave the other lineman and LB's time to make plays and they did.

I would just like to say that it's refreshing to see the big nasties up front performing at such a high level. I really thought that the front four in the past five years or so was the downfall of the team. We had some good individual players, but as a unit they got pushed around by the elite teams. I think back to the '02 team and how they dominated the line of scrimmage--freeing up LB's to make tackles in space. Third down automatically meant the other team was going to be punting, regardless of the yardage required. This defensive line is right up there with that group. Don't get me wrong; I don't think our LB's are quite there yet. But it all starts upfront and these guys give us a chance against ANYBODY. Football games are won and lost in the trenches. If the d-line continues like this and the o-line continues to gel like they did against Illinois, I'm comfortable saying we run the table in the Big 10 and go BCS bowling yet again.

Iowa's D-line looked pretty good in thier win against Penn State, they will be the dark horse for sure if they keep up thier pace by the time they get to us in the "Shoe". Kirk ferentz and his staff had a good game plan saturday night.
Then today after watching the re-play of our game with Illinois, I just have to wonder of the defensive battle that we shall see against the Hawkeyes when they come to town. Those last 3 games will be critical for sure. By the time that all comes to being i would think our offense will have matured alot by then.

Gibson had a great game last week. Heyward is the catalyst to this defense. The kid is high energy and freaking relentless. I love the way he plays the game. I would kill to have 4 of him on the defensive line; his approach to the game is infectious.

No question that should be a great game. However, I think we will be able to move the ball and hit a couple big plays against Iowa's defense. I don't think Iowa's offense will be able to sustain drives against our defense. That will be the difference. We will wear down their defensive front. If we take care of the ball in that game, I don't see how Iowa can walk out of here with a win. Tresselball works against teams like Iowa. Sound, fundamental defense and special teams with no major turnovers deep in our own territory.

Difference IMO between Us and PSU is our offensive line is surprisingly more stable. PSU's offensive front just isn't very good. They give Clark zero time to throw, and whats worse is they can't run the ball because of it. Now we ain't exactly the best Oline either but we're better, and with a more mobile QB. Not to mention far better WR's.

It should be a defensive battle but if Iowa struggled with PSU's defense they will struggle more so with OSU's defense. Better Defensive Line, and Better secondary should be enough to shut down Iowa. Plus Without Lee PSU's LB's weren't exactly at their best neither.

Nonetheless the game all the sudden with Iowa has gotten more appealing. Whats good for Iowa is its right after the PSU game and right before the UM game. Trap game for sure if we don't stay focused, but seeing as how they may be Undefeated and it being the Seniors Last homegame I believe the defensive line will really show up and will this team to another win.

Penn State has one good year every 3-4 years when their line is experienced. The other years are underachieving disappointments.

Are we still looking for any Dt's in the 2010 class? We have plenty of ends but need a wide body for some depth. Denlinger and Worthington graduate. This leaves us with Simon, Goebel, Belamy, and Larimore for next year. I suppose Heyward could move inside. Also, Baldwin is already 6' 6" and a reported 265lbs. I would still like to see one more wide body.

To be honest it is this on both sides of the ball. PSU strength was supposed to be their LB's and when 2 went down it caused stress on their D line to step up and they got worn out. I think our D line will cause so much havoc in those last 3 games (all of which will be on National fronts if Iowa beats scUM) that people will see that OSU is for real just because of our D line. Also, Clark may be the only QB to handle the pressure that our D line will bring but that O line is really not good so he may not(throws picks). This week against ILL will show us all we need to know since ILL D line is supposed to be their defense's strength. Iowa's resurgance will be HUGE for our team, like you said it gets rid of the trap game that easily befalls teams... especially younger teams. They all will get up for PSU and scUM pretty easy... so having a team coming in that could be in the top 10 right behind us would be a BIG plus instead of an unranked or low ranked team.

We sure are. And we will always be looking for defensive tackles every year for that matter. We will be fine for future years on the defensive side of the ball but for now Ohio State has to stay focused on the present and what is
going to take place for the year 2009.

Quote about Heyward and Gibson leaving early from Doug Worthington...hopefully it's true:

"They're great athletes and great guys. Just playing with those guys brings up your level of intensity and level of play in practice. So I definitely think they can but i know both of them want to stay here, graduate and be senior captains of next season."
