2009 tOSU Defensive Line Discussion

Absolutely, what makes him a high first round pick is that he was doing it all night long. I love Thad, but losing Cameron early to the NFL may be a much bigger loss. There's not many guys like him on the squad. He could end up going really high. Think LSU's Tyson Jackson going to the Chiefs 2nd overall.

We really need Cam and Thad to stay. Rose, Wilson, Worthington, and Denlinger are some heavy losses already.

I don't know a thing about Heyward personally, but if he plays like he did against USC more this season, then he needs to take it to the league. He was just obliterating people.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to the line. I was one of the (shameful) non-believers regarding the USC game. The dline and the defense in general were just incredible. Go Bucks!

Denlinger would be a big loss - if they played him. Right now, they are only using him for depth filler. Worthington showed to me Sat night he is not a DE. Not nearly enough agility / change of direction ability nor quickness. Rose has actually been doing very well. Hope to see him get more and more PT.

Losing Thad will be a loss for sure, but we are stacked at his position. Heyward is the one guy who is unique on our D-line.

Bottom line is if Heyward/Gibson return you can count on being Pre-season top 5. That'd mean 8 returning starters on defense (lose- Spitler, Coleman, Worthington) and we'd return 9 on offense (lose-Cordle, Ballard)

A defensive line for next year would be still extremely deep...

Heyward-Larimore-Simon-Gibson

Not to mention Williams, Wells, Thomas, Fellows, Goebel, Bellamy. We'll be ok but we'll be STACKED if we can have Heyward/Gibson to return. I think Gibson would probably need to extra year more but I actually think would benefit from another year to really have killer numbers in a stacked Defense next year.

It's gonna be a treat watchin them do damage this year tho.

Yeah, if he's a 1st round pick he should go(unless he wants to stay like MJ and JL did). Just speaking as a selfish fan.

Denlinger played a lot against Navy and USC, IIRC. It definitely seemed like I saw him a lot.

It's not that we don't have capable players. We just wouldn't have that great depth. We played 9 DL against USC. Those fresh bodies allowed them to keep up with that talented OL up until the last drive. We're losing at least 4 of them and possibly 6 if Thad and Cam do go. That's a lot to replace.

I personally like Gibson, Simon, Heyward and Williams on 3rd downs. Simon gets so much push, it just forces the quarterback out to the ends. There seemed to be hardly any pocket to step into when he was in. But hey, I think Rose showed some good stuff too. Overall, this unit is beyond living up to their billing after Saturday night and I'm really excited about it. If Gibson stays, this unit could still be spectacular next season as well with Gibson, Williams and Heyward at end, with Goebel, Simon and Larimore inside.

I agree with that. The talent drop off the 2-deep would see after losing Heyward would be more than losing Thad.

I think Heyward is the better NFL prospect too. We are (or at least I am) quick to compare Gibson to Gholston as far as draft potential goes but he has yet to show the production and I doubt he is the combine warrior that Gholston was. Not that I don't think Gibson will be drafted fairly high, I'm just talking about relative to Heyward.

It's how players project at the next level...Cam Heyward is about as an ideal a 3-4 DE as you can get. Dude is pushing 300 lbs with DE speed and explosion.

Thaddeus projects as a good 3-4 OLB. He is a much more fluid athlete than Vernon was, and I think his mobility will impress at the combine whenever he goes. Vernon's lack of production may scare national pundits in regards to Thaddeus, but it will be hot air, as they aren't even close in terms of playing style and agility. Vernon SHOULD be a 4-3 DE in a system like the Colts/Bucs that utilizes upfield rush ends.

Chris Russell | DISPATCH
Even though Ohio State lost to USC, Doug Worthington and the defensive line got consistent pressure on quarterback Matt Barkley.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith popped into the football meeting room Monday, two days after a tough loss to Southern California, and told the players, "You guys really brought it."

He was speaking to the whole team, but no unit brought it better than the defensive line. In a game viewed as a referendum of their highly touted ability, the Buckeyes' front stood tall.

Through 3 quarters, Ohio State limited a prolific USC offense to 82 yards rushing, 227 total yards, and 10 points -- seven coming after a turnover that gave the Trojans the ball on the Buckeyes' 2-yard line.

Ohio State sacked quarterback Matt Barkley twice and forced five three-and-outs in USC's 11 possessions.

It's impossible to overlook the Trojans' 86-yard drive to win, but given how well the defense played overall, nobody was pointing fingers at the late letdown.

"No one's embarrassed about how our defense played," coach Jim Tressel said. "Shoot, they played relentless."

Tight end Jake Ballard said, "Our defense played a great game. You can't pin that loss on the defense. USC is a great team, they're going to have a big drive. That was probably the only drive they had."

Beckman praises Buckeyes

Toledo coach Tim Beckman said one reason his team couldn't move the ball was that Ohio State had eight defensive linemen who played effectively.

The Rockets didn't try to develop a running game in rushing 13 times for 13 yards.

"With their front four they play eight different guys," Beckman said. "I think their front four is extremely good. You could see what they did last week against USC, and they came back and did it to us also. I give them full credit for stopping our offense."

Denlinger had a great game yesterday. He was in on a lot of plays and forced some sweeps inside to the meat of the defense. I'd venture to say it was his best game a Buckeye.
