2009-2010 Ohio State Hockey Season

Day One and no announcement from Gene Smith's office.

Depression and sense of impending doom starting to kick in.

Just forget about it, Mr. ORD. He's coming back.

Need more gin.

Contract not renewed. No jokes or celebration posts. It's unfortunate. Markell ran an exemplary program with a great apr and no kids getting into trouble. He just couldn't get the program to the next level on the ice. Sporadic trips to Detroit and pulling the occasional 1st round NCAA appearance (and loss) out of his ass is uncacceptable. With Ohio State taking the lead in pushing for a BTHC, we needed to show the other Big Ten hockey schools that we were serious about pushing our program to the top echelon of college hockey.

Now we need to go out and put our money and our commitment where our mouths are. Don't settle for some "up and coming" assistant. Make a Thad Matta/Jim Foster type of hire.

Markell Fired as OSU Head Coach
From OSU Press Release
The contract of John Markell, head men?s hockey coach at Ohio State, will not be renewed, Gene Smith, Ohio State associate vice president/director of athletics, announced Tuesday. Markell has served at the helm of the Buckeyes the last 15 full seasons, beginning his tenure as the interim head coach in 1995.
?We appreciate John?s service to the institution but most importantly the young men he mentored,? Smith said. ?He is a class person with great integrity. We wish him the best as he pursues his next opportunities.?
Chris Schneider, associate athletics director for sport administration, oversees the men?s hockey program at Ohio State.
?We will immediately begin the process to conduct a national search,? Schneider said. ?We will take the appropriate time to find our next head coach.?

I like the part about "taking our time" and "national search." The Fredoites think we're going to rush down there and be happy to hire one of their assistants. As usual, they have their heads firmly planted up their own asses.

Last year, Markell made 26K more than Rico Blasi (166 to 140). If Ohio State is serious about this, they could double Blasi's salary with what, to our athletic department, amounts to nothing more than ashtray change.

There's a lot at stake here: Big Ten Network getting more and more involved in hockey and the potential BTHC. On top of that, this is conceivably Gene Smith's legacy hire as he probably won't have a chance to hire football, men's b-ball or women's b-ball coaches. This hire and the direction that this program takes could be his lasting legacy on the athletic program. Andy Geiger didn't leave him much else that needs fixing.

Good post. There are sound reasons for tOSU to pursue a coach with a proven track record.

FWIW, Tom Ryan was a great choice to run the Buckeye wrestling program (National Coach of the Year in 2009). I assume he was a Gene Smith hire.

P.S. The post with the pic from Casablanca was perfect. The next post was damn funny, too.

the frozen four run was anchored by selke trophy finalist kesler, top six forward umberger, steckel and a handful of american league players. its hard to divorce yourself from the realities. however, i agree its important to walk away from a situation with class...

Wasn't the Frozen Four run in 1998? Umberger and Steckel didn't show up till the '00-'01 season and Kesler was here for one year in '02-'03.

Pretty sure those guys came after. They were the recruiting bonanza that the Frozen Four run and opening of the Schott produced. The FF team was anchored by Hugo Boisvert and Jeff Maund if memory serves me correctly.

Damn, I remember the excitement around the program at that point coming off a Frozen Four appearance, an NHL quality rink opening and starting to sign some big names like Steckell and Umberger. Let's hope we can get back to where we were a decade ago.

i meant the post frozen four success. the 00-01 to 04-05 success of the program. since then only the 08-09 season was the team better than .500

the frozen four team had a bunch of euro talent.
Oh, got it. The way it was worded made it seem like you meant they were on the Frozen Four team.
