2009-2010 Ohio State Hockey Season

I know you're not supposed to do this but is there any news or rumblings about a new hockey coach:huh: maybe Paul Pooley:)

All I know is what was in the press release: that Ohio State would take its time and conduct a national search. OTOH, Gene Smith made some rather discouraging comments to the Plain Dealer.

?We?re just looking for somebody that wants to be here,? Smith said. ?We?re not trying to go convince somebody. We want somebody that wants this job and understands that we want to have a championship program. We feel that we can consistently compete in the top half of the conference.

?We don?t expect to win that every year, but kind of like all the other sports, we want to be in the hunt and have a chance to win it periodically and periodically be in the national championship hunt. We think we have the resources to do it. We think we have the platform to do it. So we?re just going to find someone that is passionate about being here and obviously can coach and have all the other things we?re looking for.?

Not the overwhelming "commitment to excellence" that I would expect from the strongest advocate for the Big Ten Hockey Conference. Can you imagine Andy Geiger making that speech prior to hiring JT or Thad?

My model for this hire should be Andy Geiger's hiring of Coach Nazlymov to run the fencing program. Ohio State had some tradition (a national championship in the 40's) but for the most part had been a middle of the pack type program. Geiger went out and looked for a transformational figure to take the program to the next level. He went out and swung for the fences and hired the former Soviet National coach. Result: Ohio State is one of the dominant programs in the nation with two national championships, 6 top 5 NCAA finishes in the last 6 years, multiple All Americans and an Olympic medalist.

I want Smith to be thinking "take it to the next level" not "periodically be in the hunt to win the conference."

Speaking of "next level," Miami is up 1-0 on Alabama-Huntsville at the first intermission. :p

Sepia, please. You have no frame of reference. You're out of your fucking element. How well Fredo does or does NOT do against a team that shouldn't even be in the tournament is irrelevant. Talk to me tomorrow after you actually play a Big Ten team.

Time will tell. I hope he was promised the hockey arena that's rumored to be on the books. Nothing big is going to happen with Ohio State hockey until we correct the mistake of moving them into the Schott.
hockey arena:huh: first I have heard of that. They can't even get enough money together to start the basketball practice facility that is more on the books than any rumored hockey arena.

According to some far more in the know than I on the USCHO boards, there are plans drawn up and on the books for a 7-8K facility for the men's and women's hockey teams to be built north of the Schott. Although, from my perspective, it should be built on the site of French Field House in order to make it more convenient to students.

I agree...the Schott is borderline off-campus as far as students who live on campus are concerned. Going further north would simply mean they might as well build out in Hilliard.

Why they keep the French Field House standing is beyond me.

Geiger didn't make many mistakes as AD, but building the Schott like they did and where they did surely seems like a big mistake to me.

They're not getting rid of the French Field House anytime soon... they just resurfaced and upgraded the indoor track facility. FFH is better than it was but I was hoping they would go with the rumored new facility just north of Jesse Owens Stadium but OSU opted for the more economical approach.

I'd be on board with that (build on the site of FFH) because that would also mean a new indoor track facility. But as I mentioned above, that seems highly unlikely for the foreseeable future.

Sorry to bring track conversation into the hockey thread, just wanted to give a bit of perspective in regards to the French Field House.

This is a good idea as far as the facility but I wonder about attendance.

With Ohio State and the Blue Jackets working on a deal that would put Nationwide Arena and Value City Arena under joint management by the university, insiders are suggesting there might be an unintended benefit for the Ohio State men's hockey program.

The Buckeyes have occasionally been shuttled off to the tiny OSU Ice Rink when Value City Arena had a previous commitment, such as the high school wrestling state tournament. An empty Nationwide Arena could provide an attractive alternative. An occasional game on the home ice of the local NHL team might also serve as another inducement for new coach Mark Osiecki to use on prospective recruits.
