2009-2010 Ohio State Hockey Season

If the Big 10 Hockey League was established in the upcoming years - anyone have a lead as to what the other CCHA teams would do in terms of joining another conference?

One would assume the WCHA would just pick up the best two teams and roll them over to their conference (Miami, Ferris State, Northern Mich).

I have an Uncle that is a former Air Force cadet who walked on to the Falcons hockey team along time ago and he keeps reminding me the awesome tradition of the CCHA.

******

hilarious update - check out the WCHA webpage - apparently they think that Ohio State is in their conference? What the hell?

Actually, we are for women's hockey. Which brings up the issue that we'd need to have 5 schools establish women's d1 programs in order to make the jump to a BTHC.

Not quite what would remain of the rump CCHA. Don't really care. Fuck 'em.

i dont think you can do it even with the mens teams. if expansion occurs id like a consideration (amongst academia, football, basketball, then hockey)

You're certainly right that hockey is way down on the priority list. The one wild card that's never existed before is the BTN. It wants Big Ten Hockey, and with every year, the pot o' gold that it's pumping back to the schools is growing and might provide the funding to make the jump.

correct, however the issue still stands that you only have what 5 big ten hockey teams. you need at least one more, if not three more teams to make it any sort of reality, likely. i still think penn state is the school closest to being pressured (and growing) into a hockey program. further, the addition of a syracuse and/or notre dame would add another team, etc.

This really grinds my gears! This clown is essentially telling people to not take the Ohio State job and that the faults of the program lie in the hands of the administration.

Did this guy pay attention that last decade!

I'll be the first to say that the athletic department needs to make a much stronger commitment to hockey up to and including a 6-8K hockey only facility. But Markell, for all the positives about his program, was released for two reasons. He wasn't getting it done on the ice, and he wasn't developing the talent he had off the ice.

Markell recruited three players who would go on to become All-Americans. He recruited 18 players who would be drafted into the NHL, including three first-round picks and two second-round picks. Four of his players - R.J. Umberger of the Blue Jackets, Ryan Kesler of the Vancouver Canucks, Dave Steckel of the Washington Capitals and Rod Pelley of the New Jersey Devils - are well-established at the NHL level. A number of others are sprinkled throughout the minor leagues.

And what did all that talent that Markell and Casey recruited accomplish? Sporadic, mostly losing, trips to The Joe and a couple of first round NCAA losses. Can anyone really tell me that Steckell or Umberger were better players after 2 or 3 years in Markell's system than they were during their freshmen years. I had season tickets back then, and what I witnessed was a total stagnation of talent.
