ESPN - Miami could net second consecutive top-five class - Football Recruiting

Stanley, Houston: Of the new head coaches this year, which are recruiting the best right now?

Good question, Stan. There are 16 new head coaches leading teams in 2008. Although they are busy trying to post wins, they also are trying to assemble their first full classes. It is pretty simple who leads the way: Rich Rodriguez at Michigan is doing the best job of the new coaches. This is no surprise, though, because Michigan is a school with tons of history and tradition. Although the 2008 season may be filled with some serious highs and lows for Wolverines fans as far as wins and losses go, they can at least take solace in the fact that Rodriguez is putting together a good class and getting some of the pieces he needs to try to return Michigan to past glory. The most glaring need for Michigan is at quarterback -- the Wolverines do not have the player needed to run Rodriguez's scheme. They have addressed this need in recruiting. The Wolverines have commitments from Tate Forcier (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and Shavodrick Beaver (Wichita Falls, Texas / Rider), both of whom are athletic quarterbacks who appear to be good fits. The class also boasts a talented wide receiver in Bryce McNeal (Minneapolis / Breck) and a trio of good defensive ends led by Craig Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral). Right now, Michigan is in that top-15 range nationally, but Rodriguez is at the top among the new coaches.

Abram in Flint, Mich.: Do you think Michigan will become a major player in the state of Florida for top recruits this year and in years to come?

I think Michigan will have more of a presence and success in Florida under Rodriguez than it previously had. Still, I don't think the Wolverines will be a major player in the Sunshine State.

Michigan is a program that can recruit nationally, but its recruiting base is in the Midwest, and it can be tough to go into Florida and tangle with the likes of Miami, Florida, and Florida State as well the other ACC, SEC and Big East programs that recruit Florida hard. The 2006 and 2007 classes under Lloyd Carr had only one signed player from Florida. But in the limited time Rodriguez had to work with the 2008 Michigan class, he hauled in three Florida prospects late.

Thus far, the 2009 class has four prospects committed from Florida, led by Brandin Hawthorne (Pahokee, Fla.). The Wolverines are also in the hunt for more Floridian talent, with prospects such as athlete Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and linebacker Mike Marry (Largo, Fla.). Rodriguez did land key players from Florida like Noel Devine and Jock Sanders while at West Virginia, so it is possible, especially at a more traditional power like Michigan, that Rodriguez will have some success recruiting Florida.

I assume he means in the recruiting department only?

The thing I can't figure out is what benefit comes from leaving Threet in there? He's not going to be the QB next year. One of the new recruits, whoever it winds up being, will be given the reins immediately
Because Threet's stuck at quarterback while whatever WR you might propose will simply return to WR once Forcier and Beaver show up. I don't really consider it a given that they'll take the reins right away, and even if they do it'll be nice to have a quarterback with a year in the offense listed as backup rather than having to drag somebody back from a non-QB position again.

Peace decommitted from UM due to negative recruiting
Not snake oil?

Houston Nutt just beat Florida. Pelini is changing the mentality at Nebraska.

I guess RR has some of the best upside with resources/etc, but I'd like to hear him qualify that statement as well.
Not snake oil?
I was going to say that there's little distinction, since both negative recruiting and snake oil hold negative meanings in recruiting, but I guess that isn't necessarily true to RR fans :p

Michigan may have a future under RR, but they are starting 10 seniors right now (15 in the two deep). In two weeks they will be looking at 2-6 with 3 of their last 4 on the road and virtually no chance at a bowl.

They also have 12 Juniors in that two deep. How much of a turn around can be expected in their final season? Particularly when one of those 12 is the QB - a person whose replacement with an incoming Frosh is almost a prerequisite to any sort of resurgence?

If - after all the work they supposedly did under Barwis this summer and getting no return - RR can keep that group from quitting I will give him a tip of the hat.

Of course, after losing to MSU they will have only one thing left to play for - and that is beating us.

The amazing thing to me is how abrupt the change to the spread has been. There was absolutely no transition and this season is being seen as the sacrificial lamb on the way to better things.

Hey, Auburn did it between the end of the season and the bowl last year. That's going well, isn't it?

If RR to Clemson is all smoke (I think it is) look for RR to Auburn to be the next big rumor if Tommy doesn't turn things around.

In the mean time let's fan the flames of RR to Clemson. Can't help their recruiting if nothing else. I mean, how many transfers and decommits can one coach stand?

It is almost inconceivable that a coach could leave UM after only one season, but transition or no there has to be a bottom to expectations in AA.

On a scale of one to infinity, how much does RichRod wish he had Antonio Bass right now? If he had recovered from his injury, he would be a junior right now. He was an incredible athlete with huge upside. It was a darn shame to see him go down.

Sweet grab. He was being called as one who had the potential to be one of the greatest athletes ever in the history of Michigan, so his loss was, and still is indescribable.

But to answer your question, I'd say one; because most Michigan fans would lead to you to believe he could get the local janitor in the Big House, have him meet Barwis, and wallah we have our new Superhuman Robot-Arm QB.

Here are a few more questions

How will not making a bowl impact their young players progression going into the spring and next season? The practices you get during this time are valuable for the younger players.

If Michigan were to win 3-4 games how would it affect their OOS commits and prospects as other big programs make a push after the season up till NLOID. Will they have 3-4 decommits...MAYBE MORE? That would be devasting late in the game especially if it were Forcier or Beaver.

Hurts big time to not have the extra practice time. That's how Alabama did it last year, went 6-6, spent the 15 practices on prefecting Saban's schemes, went out with a nice bowl victory, and bam great start to the season this year so far.

And about decommits, well Forcier is not going to decommit, he comes out all the time essentially saying the QBs suck ("The current QBs they have there can't run their system, but I can"), and so he's licking his chops to come out here in January to work to get the job.. FWIW him and Beaver are both coming to the MSU game (where we have about 15 or so recruits coming to the game) to recruit for Michigan, so I'm not sure if they'll decommit.

The one I'm worried about is DeQuinta Jones though, he committed without ever seeing campus, so he doesn't have the strong ties that the others have. He's actually one of my favorite recruits in this class so it would suck to lose him. I'm pretty happy though, because alot of the recruits this year don't see it as "Michigan sucks, I don't want to go there".. They see "Michigan is lacking playmakers on both sides of the ball, I can come right in, work my ass off, and potentially have a chance at starting/getting some serious PT." So it works both ways.

Depth charts and records, either good or bad, can be a blessing or a curse, depending on the individual recruit. Some of these kids look at the problems and believe that they can and will be the ones to fix them. They see the early PT, and, while not technically avoiding competition, see the possibly quicker road to stardom as the main selling point. This common train of thought leads many stagnant programs back to relevance. Like ChisAto said, it can go the other way though. Many other recruits see the problems as actual problems that won't be fixed in the 4 years they will spend in the program, and would rather learn behind an established player somewhere else. So teams in either category can land amazing recruiting classes, and also less-than-stellar classes.

In the end, coaching is what is going to pay the bills, and the 'Blue' is severely wounded right now.

Sources: Kampfer was hospitalized after attack by football player
Police have a suspect; sources say running back Mike Milano attacked hockey player

By Daily Sports Editor Michael Eisenstein
and Managing Editor Gabe Nelson On October 14th, 2008

Sources say LSA senior Mike Milano, a running back on the Michigan football team, assaulted LSA junior Steve Kampfer, right, a defenseman on the Michigan hockey team.

LSA junior Steve Kampfer, a defenseman on the Michigan hockey team who was injured early Sunday morning in an off-ice incident, incurred his injuries when he was thrown headfirst into the sidewalk by a Michigan football player, sources say.

An eyewitness account and several sources place Kampfer at an assault that took place near the intersection of Church Street and Willard Street at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday.

University Police described the victim as a 20-year-old male University student from Jackson, which fits Kampfer's description on the Athletic Department's website. An LSA senior who witnessed the assault and described it in an interview with the Daily confirmed from photographs that Kampfer was the victim. He asked to remain anonymous for his protection.

Lieutenant Robert Neumann said the victim was picked up and “body-slammed” to the ground by a man, who was accompanied by two other men. Neumann said police have a suspect, whom he described as a 22-year-old male University student from Ohio.

Because the assault is still under investigation and police have not yet arrested a suspect, police would not release the names of the victim and suspects.
According to the witness, Kampfer and an unidentified friend were walking southward on Church Street when three unknown males caught up to them just past the intersection with Willard Street.

The man walking with Kampfer turned around as the group approached and said something the witness could not hear. The witness said the man walking with Kampfer appeared to be urging the three men to “relax.”

The witness said two of the men walked past Kampfer and his friend, shoving them aside, and then the third picked up Kampfer from behind and slammed him headfirst into the sidewalk. Kampfer’s friend yelled at the group, but the men continued walking south on Church Street, the witness said.

He said Kampfer wasn’t moving and appeared to be unconscious after the attack.

The witness described the attacker as a short, athletically built blonde male. He said the attacker was accompanied by two other men with athletic builds and blonde hair. All three were wearing jeans and black shirts that read “Get Wet” in red or orange on the back, according to the eyewitness.
Several sources said they didn’t know what led to the altercation.
