the 4 teams ahead of USC all had 1 loss, and UFs loss to Mississippi is of the same quality but USCs loss was on the road.

not saying it is the sole reason, but I think that USC & PSU were hurt in BCS picture at least partly due to conference perception

USC has no argument over the b12 teams based on the nature of their losses alone. Sure the rest of their schedule is suspect, but if USC & PSU lost to Ohio State, they'd be right there in the hunt for a NC spot (maybe a touch behind).

OSU got humiliated in the desert. They emerged highly ranked the next season, with their NC destiny in their hands.

If OSU beats USC and goes undefeated next season, they probably have a shot at another title game.

Bottom line: win, and the conference is irrelevant. The only reason folks care about the big ten is because of how OSU has performed.

Strength of conference is used to argue before games and after them when you can't just say "scoreboard".
