Report: Scott Shafer agreed not to 'demean' Michigan - NCAA Football - Bowls - 2008 - SI.com
What did they want to keep quiet? That purdue debacle, forcing Shafer to run a 3-3-5?

Follow the money jwins - this is all about exacting leverage over Shafer. In return he continues to draw his salary, keep use of the courtesy car and live the life of a top flight DC.
Free Press
So if Shafer has any negative feelings toward U-M or coach Rich Rodriguez, he is forbidden from declaring them publicly.
In return, he will continue to draw his salary and benefits, including a courtesy car, until May 1, unless he finds another job. He also agreed to release U-M from any possible further legal action.
The delay in the announcement probably came because Shafer, who signed it on Dec. 9, had seven days to revoke settlement after signing.
While Shafer wouldn't commit to his next step on the day he resigned, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported on Dec. 22 that Shafer might be interviewing there.
In the uncertain world of coaching, and given his past peripatetic career course ...

Coaching career (HC unless noted)
1991-92 .... Indiana graduate asst.
1993-95 .... Rhode Island secondary
1996-99 .... No. Illinois secondary
2000-03 ..... No. Illinois def. coordinator
2004 .......... Illinois secondary
2005-06 ..... W. Michigan def. coordinator
2007 .......... Stanford def. coordinator
2008 ........... Michigan def. coordinator

I think Shafer's acquiescence is saddening, yet entirely understandable.

Did anyone question the validity of Nebraska's NC's in the 90's because Oklahoma was on the seat of its ass?

Every mini dynasty run in CFB the last 20 years or so has coincided with one team rising to power status and the rest of the league falling way off. Miami, FSU, Nebraska, USC all went on multiple NC appearance runs out of very weak conferences.

If the power team goes OOC and wins all is forgiven, if the power team goes OOC and gets waxed they get crucified. The power team controls its own destiny.

Bad things happening to scUM=good for us. Always.

To echo Mili, Fuck Michigan.

Why? Seriously, do you think if we sucked they would be "I wish tOSU was better." No, this fucks would celebrate our misery, if they never win another game it won't effect me, the beating in 2006 didn't feel any better than 2007 or 2008.

I think Shafer did exactly what I would have hoped to have done under the circumstances.

Would I prefer to allow myself to vent, giving momentary salve to my feelings while basically screwing my family? I hope not, but I probably would.

Shafer made the decision that any mature man would make. Too bad there are so few mature men (and I'm not one of them, unfortunately).

Beating them will always be cool. It feels good every time. The only difference is that sometimes we get the actual feeling of having won the game very late (2002, 2005) and sometimes we can get it a little earlier than usual (2008, 2009, 2010).

While I agree with the sentiment for the most part, dashing their championship hopes in 2006 felt slightly better, to me anyway, than the savage ape rape we layed on them last month. But really I agree, fuck 'em. I hope the whole lot of 'em catch an embarrassing case of jock itch at a most inoppurtune moment.

If we knock scUM out of national championship contention, awesome. Fuck 'em.

If we knock them out of bowl contention, fuckin' sweet.

If they're already miserable, and we still beat them? I'm glad we got to rub it in at the end of the year.

All are equally awesome.

Nice post Max.

Haven't really conversed with Scott in a long time, but I'll tell ya what, this guy is as good a person you'd ever want to meet from an absolutely great family. I've coached baseball with Scott, and coached his youger brother, John, as well. His dad, Ron Shafer was my High School Health Teacher, and one of the coolest people I ever met. scUM, and probably Dick-Rod are afraid of being exposed here, for basically keeping others from saying publicly which most know, that their football program is in shitty shape and in shitty hands.

Scott has a real nice coaching career in front of him, and I'd welcome him to TOSU in a heartbeat. He said all the right things when he got hired at scUM, but I'll tell you the real truth, that guy has true "Scarlet" blood in his veins. scUM was a shot to make it to the top and he made what he thought was a good "career" move. Scott has way too much class to ever consider saying anything that scUM thought he might. From his very modest upbringing, and the work-ethic that he got from his parents, he will persevere in a big way, and I am pulling for him "big-time."

Peace.

I actually liked kicking em while they were down last year more. Maybe because of the new coaching situation, but watching them fail so many times, then get rolled up in Cbus really made my year. Maybe 2006 would have felt better if we ended our year on a better note.

I still don't understand why we never got involved in on Will C's recruitment when he decommitted.
Because he wasn't going to go to Ohio State. And because Ohio State wasn't all that interested anyway.

He's the big, nasty, space-eating NT that we so badly need, IMO.
In the eyes of delusional Michigan fans, maybe. In reality, he's a future OL.

BUT, i still believe that in the end we need the state up north to be competitive. it is for the sake of this great rivalry and this conference.
No, we don't. If the Buckeyes go undefeated, then they win the national championship, regardless of who they play. I'm so damned sick and tired of people worrying about the quality (or lack thereof) of the Big Ten - the Buckeyes simply need to take care of their own business, and everything will be fine for us fans. The rest of the conference can go to Hell, for all I care.

Jaxbuck;1365731; said:
Personally I don't care if they never win a game again. I want to see their program completely destroyed.
Agreed.

Oh8ch;1365740; said:
Michigan will come back - just as Alabama finally came back and as Nebraska will eventually come back. Alumni will continue to pour money in until it does. And the program name does carry some weight.
I hear that the University of Chicago is making a comeback as well....

Oh8ch;1365740; said:
But I have to agree that there was something missing this year in beating a 3-8 team.
No there wasn't ... except for maybe a few touchdowns on our side of the scoreboard.

Oh8ch;1365740; said:
It is much more satisfying to crush their hopes when they have some.
Actually, it is much more fun to kick them while they are down. Those arrogant morons still think that they "own" the rivalry because they were great back before World War One. And they still think that they are some kind of academic powerhouse, even though Ohio State had three times as many Academic All Big Ten players this year ... and nine times as many starters who made the list. No, Michigan Man still needs about three more decades of utter degradation and humiliation before they'll even admit that they aren't the premier program in all of college football ... and about a century more before they'll even think about Ohio State being their equal. Maybe when LJB-IV is an old man, they'll have had enough punishment, but until then, kick them hard ... and aim for the nuts.

Oh8ch;1365740; said:
Beyond that, if the Midwest and schools like Michigan continue to lose players like Campbell to the SEC it is not good for anyone in the region including us.
Why?

Oh8ch;1365740; said:
If UM falls from a perennial second place (maybe even first once in a while) to a consistent 6th or so by definition somebody else will move up. But that doesn't mean that team will be better than they are today and it doesn't help our arguments to be taken seriously.
13-0 is the only argument that I need in order to be taken seriously.

University of Southern California - Exhibit A

Playing in a conference with a shit reputation hasn't hurt SC, and I doubt it'll hurt OSU if that's what happens to the Big 10. Like you, I'm sick of the "we have to worry about our conference" mentality. I could give a fuck if Penn State wins, I could care less if Illinois stays home or goes bowling. It just doesnt much matter to me. I will use the data of a strong Big 10 (ie bowl wins, SOS, whatever) if I need it in an argument.. that is to say, I guess on some level I would prefer a strong showing... but caring is another issue. As I say with the godawful SEC chant... you'll never see me chanting "Big ten, Big ten, Big ten" and if you do, you have my permission to shoot me in the stones.

In any event, I'm with you 100% on this. People are (once again) frustrated by the national perception that is not smiling on the Big 10 right now. So. Fucking. What? Do you need something from the "nation" to have your allegiance to Ohio State football validated? Do you need the nation to know you're watching quality football in the Big Ten, or can you just watch the fucking games and not worry about what Mark May (etc.) has to say about it?

Honestly, my time as a college football fan is vastly more pleasant now that I refuse to watch studio shows (pregame, half time, post game) I like the highlights, but I'll do without the commentary, thank you.
