2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

<rant>How's that old saying go? fool me once......, fool me twice......,
What about a third straight time? Surely I'm not the only one who feels like we have "fooled" ourselves by ignoring the problems we continue to see show up with this team in the trenches. As everyone has been saying the Oline play and Dline play have been horrendous and we all know it's not just been the UF, LSU, and USC games. We all talk about it after it happens, and then, probably because we have a long off-season, it seems like we all forget about it. I don't know what the answer is and we can all give suggestions, but I'm ready for some real changes/fixes/whatever you want to call it. This problem of loosing in the trenches is disgusting and I know we are all sick of talking about it after the fact......and then seeing nightmares like last Saturday happen all over again. I posted on on this thread just before the game that it all hinges on the Oline not because I'm <censored>ing Nostradamus but because this keeps showing up. I'm sure I wasn't the only one thinking about Troy Smith being tossed around and running for his life 2 years ago. No more denial. No more forgeting that this is a problem and it will go away, even when we struggle to move the ball against teams like Ohio. We can't be loosing in the trenches if we expect to beat anyone these days. </rant>

Sorry I had to get that off my chest. :(

With the shifts around the O-line, I believe that Person is a major liability. His pass blocking is subpar, and he was solely responsible for a busted 3rd down option play.

It's been said before, but I think the line for this year should be:

Boone-Cordle-Brewster-Browning-Shugarts

good call. Person/Boone led the team last year in penalties.

WE have a problem...It is Bollman

After four games and grading out the o-line play it has become clear that we are dealing with a weak line-up or a poorly coached one.
Bollman has been coaching a long time, i knew him from NC State. It is not news that he is not looked upon as a very good D1 OFF Cord. he has the title but no say.
His line with a very talented Boone at LT is the reason for our poor start.

I work with an NFL HOF'er who still makes a living reviewing Pro Lineman and assisting them with tactics and technique.
After last weeks game we spoke and he said that Boone was destroyed and that the only talent that stuck out was JD Sugarts.
Big Bob Brown was known for his nasty play and told me that kid was the only Buckeye that looked as though he was in the fight.

We spoke today and for some reason Sugarts never played.
Pryor was on the move all day dealing with the Freshman center and the weak RT Browning.
Boone played hard but still was missing people and therefore Pryor had to use his athletic ability to make things happen.
3-1 against Yougstown State, Ohio, Troy. and then be destroyed nationally by USC says something about our program.
Tressel can recruit but why does he not go after a real D1 line coach.
Bob Stoops told a recruit last year that Bollman was not respected and that the kid would make a mistake going to OSU, he is playing baseball instead.

I never write on these site but if you really want to understand why this will be a year for a level two bowl loss look no further that Coach Bollman.

I know Jim and he has always been a good guy, and the players like him but he was not very good at Ohio U when he played and for some reason cannot convey quality coaching to his top line recruits.

Tressell brings in the best and Bollman takes them down.

We have had some very good players that went on to the NFL and prospered but that is their talent and not the coaching.
Boone should and would be an All American but it will not happen after he graded so low against the Trojans, he is not a LT that can play at the level of top 5 round picks, he goes low 5 next year or 6th and ends up at RT.

We need to understand that if the line could control the D then Pryor would not need to run like he did today and the QB on the bench would still be playing.
That is the raw deal, the QB is the victim when the man that is responsible for protecting him just cannot coach at this level.

We win again against a school that has 1 dollar for every 1000 we have for the program. get ready to watch pryor move because if we do not get that line right we will have upsets and a young QB's career on the line.

Please do not comment unless you watch the lime play.

I noticed one thing today...two times we used TP on a sneak to get a short first down. On the first, the line just moved Troy's D back about four yards. Excellent push. The second time it wasn't too bad either. With a little tweaking, this line could be damn good by the end of the year. They need time to play together, as a unit, before the communication is there. They'll get there.

Sorry It is J B Shugarts

I apologize to the readers as I made a mistake on J. B. Shugarts name.

As far as Bob Stoops he and his staff came to Columbus to spend time with our coaching staff, the two heads have great respect for each other.

So J.B. Shugarts play so far we have him down with several pancakes and he also has proved to be very good at getting down the the 2nd and 3rd levels. He played TE in high school and never dropped a pass.

BUT IF YOU ARE EDUCATED ON O-LINE PLAY THAT IS THE WAEKNESS OF THIS FOOTBALL TEAM, PENALTIES LAST WEEK AND AGAIST A VERY LIGHT D LINED TODAY COULD NOT CONTAIN THEIR NUMBER AND HAD PRYOR ON THE MOVE.
I STAND BY PRYOR PLAYING PART TIME IF THE LINE DID ITS JOB BUT SINCE THEY PLAYED SO POORLY WE HAVE A FRESHMAN QB WHO IS THE NEXT VINCE YOUNG WITH A BETTER ARM PLAYING NOW.
SO SOME GOOD COME OUT OF IT.
WAIT UNTIL THEY START LINING UP TO PLAY SOME SPEED AND SIZE SCHOOLS LIKE LAST WEEK.
AGAIN I KNOW JIM AND I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST HIM AND ALL HIS EFFORT HE IS JUST NOT D1 TOP LEVEL COACH......AND I AM JUST REPEATING WHAT EVERYONE KNOWS.
