2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

A quote from the article:

"I think we just needed a kick in the rear, absolutely," Boone said. "We were kind of like, 'Aw man, this is our O-line. And we've known each other, and we can just kind of play how we want to play.' And coach Tress was kind of showing us, 'No, you're going to play how I want you to play.' Which is nice, because I think that's kind of like how a lot of us are; we need to get yelled at to play better."

Play how we want to play? Boone is a fine Buckeye and a talent, but for a player at TOSU to even suggest something like that, much less utter it to the paper, is unf--kingreal.

This suggests, at least to me, that Coach Bollman lost control awhile ago. It also suggests that they were just kinda going through the motions and that's unacceptable.

Just an embarrassing quote. They need to get yelled at to play better? I read another quote from Boone commenting how he hasnt been able to get himself "up" for games this year, but Tressel yelling at him, has him more focused now.

Unbelievable

Offensive line's performance enough to make Tressel scream

COLUMBUS - Just after Ohio State's 35-3 loss at Southern California, outspoken offensive lineman Alex Boone said he hoped the coaches would punish the team and make them run for their uninspiring performance.
When he got back home, Boone got a little more than he asked for. He got head coach Jim Tressel in the offensive line's face. He got Coach Sweater Vest at full volume.
Apparently, Tressel reached the same conclusion as most people who watched Ohio State's first three games: the offensive line needed a lot of work.
On the Monday after the USC game, Tressel stopped by where the offensive line was practicing and stayed for a while. And he offered some not very subtle instructions.

I seriously think Tressel should consider sitting Boone for the first couple series to really get his attention...actually both Boone and Person. And once they're in, the first fuckin' false start or holding penalty by either and "Bang!", right back on the bench. No excuse for either one. Go back and look the majority of false starts and holds...they're being committed by those (Boone and Person) who should be playing the best.

Wouldn't mind seeing this happen to all the veterans, also wouldn't mind seeing it when there is a really bad missed tackle...

Boone's a good guy but if I'm on the coaching staff I'm telling him to just play football and stop worrying about what cute quote he's gonna give the press.

I mean the guy has personality, but even when they play below their own expectations you can tell he takes great delight in yakking it up with the reporters...

Just play freakin football for now.

I'd like to see that too. Last year, the starters didn't have to do much fighting for their jobs because there was no depth. Now there are some young pups nipping at their heels. If Boone or any other veteran can't get it together, sit him.

Anyone can talk the talk... now's the time to walk the walk.

IMO, he's pretty much had his chance to walk the walk.. it hasnt happend and he has 9 games left in his OSU career. As someone above pointed out, Boone has been hinting at lack of motivation, lack of urgency, and lack of focus for 2+ years now. I think what we see it what we're gonna get the final 9 games. Moments of briliance, moments of boneheaded plays, and just a whole lot of mediocre OT play.

Like many of you I feel Boone is a bit inconsistent. However, I beleive the Jim Bollman era has been one where the talent exceeds the coaching. The line plays inconsistently as a group and part of the blame goes to Bollman. He's not horrible, but tOSU could do better here.

Our other position coaches get picked off by other D1 schools regularly. Does JB's phone ring? Our players seem to succeed in the NFL, but at OSU we regularly get our QB destroyed when playing better teams, or we give up a safety to Akron. When we Totally dominate our opponent in the trenches, JT opens the playbook and is hailed a genius. But he takes the blame for being 'vanilla' when we get pushed around.

My analogy has always been that 'Bollman is like a sloppy driver with the Better car in the race.' Even though he wins a lot, he regularly gets out-coached IMO.
