2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

Man, Brewster has really given that line a spark I think. That kid is a lunch pail type player, he's going to be a dandy I think.

I agree with this...I still think that Cordle is the weak link at time...He is the one guy that seems to not get push...He blocks his guy, but no push...

He has gotten somewhat better at G tho, and he knows the calls, to help out Brewster...

Does anyone think we will be going to slightly smaller O lines in the near future? For more quickness/speed. Does the "spread" utilize smaller/quicker guys?

I'd think if that were the case, Brewster, Adams and Shugarts wouldn't have been recruited...I mean, why recruit that type of lineman in the same class as the guy who will be running the "spread"?

You gotta find guys with size and athleticism to truly be effective all the time...Guys like Shugarts, Adams, Brewster, Hall, Linsley, Mewhort, etc are a start...

You can mask a guy like Browning inside at G where he can be a road grader, and struggle with his feet, but on the outside he can struggle with quicker DE's...

But you need a guy with some beef inside, unlike Cordle to get a push, especially against the big DT's...

exactly right, we need more size on both lines, quick. The men are doing a good job, but especially at the d line, we need the size.

Sure the trend is towards smaller linemen on the d side to defend against the spread with speed. However, the two gapper still rules the day. It's the same on the o line. A big guy like Orlando is still going to dominate a quicker guy 9/10.

I think the whole "Brew Crew" was just a perfect storm in recruiting and not indicative of a greater design in O lineman type.

I could definitely agree with that, though we didn't seem to go after any other type of OL this year. Seems to me JT thinks they can use the big guys effectively so long as they're athletic enough. Who knows, maybe JT and staff have come up with a new twist on the spread and are waiting to implement it until next year, when the offense as a whole would be better seasoned to execute, with the infusion of this and next years frosh.

The line has been doing a good job these past few weeks. Pryor seems to have plenty of time to throw the ball, although part of that is probably the defense fearing that he would take off if they rush too hard. The holes for Beanie are there. Brewster and Boren are going to be some serious road graders inside.

Ohio State football: More offensive line changes

Posted by Doug Lesmerises October 13, 2008 13:20PM

More changes to the Ohio State offensive line, at least according to the latest depth chart released today. And a phone call to the OSU sports information office indicated that this is not just a typo.
Former right guard Ben Person is listed as the starter at left guard and former left guard Jim Cordle, who was previously the center, is listed as the starter at right guard.
Steve Rehring, who played right guard, right tackle and some left tackle on Saturday, is listed only as the backup at left guard, as he was last week. Freshmen J.B. Shugarts and Mike Adams have been removed as backups on the depth chart. Shugarts has missed several games with an injury, while Adams, after playing briefly last week, was seen after the game on crutches and in a walking boot.
So what's going on?

Confirmed w/ depth chart dated Oct 13 just posted to the official site.

O-Line
1st team: Boone, Person, Brewster, Cordle, Browning, (Ballard)
2nd team: Mitchum, Rehring, Cordle, Smith, Kerr, (Nicol)

BB73 EDIT - This was dismissed as a 'typo' by JT at his press conference. Person's still at RG, Cordle at LG.

I was at the Purdue game last week and it appeared to me that the offensive line took a step backwards. The line has all the talent in the world, but they just aren't quite hitting on all cylinders. Blocks weren't being sustained very long, lots of missed blocking assignments, very little push on running plays, etc. Beanie was consistently having to break a tackle or two before even getting to the line of scrimmage. Pass blocking seemed pretty good for the most part. TP is holding on to the ball for too long at time, but hell he is a freshman and as good as he is, you just can't expect perfection.....yet:)
