2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

Buckeyes' offensive line looking for answers

COLUMBUS ? In coffee shops, on city buses, at the kitchen table and around the water cooler, Ohio State fans are becoming increasingly familiar with the guys on the offensive line.
This is not a good thing. What is being said about the usually anonymous guys on the front wall isn't fit for young ears.
Sure, the Buckeyes are No. 12 in the nation and share the Big Ten lead with marks of 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. But that offensive line stinks! Or so everyone says.
The linemen had a summit meeting Sunday night ? and, amazingly, they agree with that assessment.
"(Tight end) Rory Nicol was the person who stepped up and said it," tackle Alex Boone said this week during preparations for Saturday's showdown with No. 20 Michigan State. "(He said) you guys look like a bunch of girls out there. That's the truth."
The numbers show that the biggest blockers aren't doing a very good job. Ohio State failed to score an offensive touchdown last week in a 16-3 victory over Purdue, which came in ranked near the bottom of the conference in defense.

Dispatch
Criticism revs up linemen
Buckeyes' struggles put tight end on offensive

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
No matter how poorly Ohio State's offensive linemen might have played last week, they regard their meeting room as macho territory. Yet it was there that tight end Rory Nicol laid it out in no uncertain terms as they began preparing for the game Saturday at Michigan State. "He said, 'I didn't get to play (the past two weeks because of an ankle sprain), but I'm still (mad). You guys, you look like a bunch of girls out there, and that's the truth,' " senior left tackle Alex Boone recalled.
Nicol was not booed back into his seat; it was the opposite reaction.
"It just takes one person to step up and say it," Boone said.
Not that it was a secret. Bashing the offense, and the line in particular, has been a growing sport. Not mean enough, not quick enough, not physical enough, not together enough -- name the not, and it probably has been tied to the offense.
Before the season, there were great expectations because the offense featured nine returning starters, including tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells, a Heisman Trophy hopeful.

Does this include the bowl game?

He said they're out for the year, but he wasn't asked specifically about whether that included the bowl game.

He did say that neither one would be eligible for a medical redshirt.

Offensive line played very well today against Sparty. Cordle struggled a bit early in the game, but recovered and had some key blocks. We ran the ball a lot and there was a hole more often than not. The only weakness I noticed was the false starts. Definitely a step in the right direction.

I think the Oline needs to do the Dot Drill everyday 10 times for the rest of the season. Maybe they do it, but wow, can't have earth movers that can't get out of the mud.

I wish I knew the reasons for the O-line's struggles this year.

But not as much as I wish Jim Bollman knew.

I've been saying it since last season and then listening to Earle Bruce on the radio last night made myself feel correct :)
Bruce said, in a polite way, how much love he has for Bollman but, this was a few things that stood out. Bollman is teaching a different way of blocking that he would NOT DO OR HAVE Someone WORKING FOR HIM DO, WHEN HE WAS AT OSU. WOW. A few old players were on- line with Bruce and the things they were saying, was pretty much, Bollman wants the linemen to block as blockers not attackers and one of the older players sounded [censored]ed off when he said,TODAY AT OSU, IF I'M SUPPOSE TO BLOCK A DEFENSIVE PLAYER STANDING UP TO BLOCK HIM OR TO SLOW DOWN HIS PRESSURE AND HE'S GOING FULL SPEED. I'M ON MY ASS OR TACKLING/HOLDING HIM EVERY PLAY. HE ALSO SAID, THATS WHAT THE BENGALS USE TO DO AND MUNOZ AND OTHERS ALWAYS BITCHED ABOUT IT. LIKE NOT LETTING THEM GO AT FULL SPEED.

One positive thing Bruce said, and for Tressel's thinking about this, with OSU'S RECORDS SO FAR. What do I do with the records , big ten titles and national games wins/losses. NOTHING HOW CAN I.

I'm saying this cuz I really mean it, why have some of us been willing to throw the QB under the bus when the problem is the OL and the OL coach all along? Boeckman has to thrown under the bus, and he doesn't even get paid to play QB here. Isn't it wrong that we've sheltered the OL coach at the expense of our players on this site?

bingo. I love Tressel but, his loyalty to staff and older players on the team have always got me and I know its bad when I try to talk to some older players/friends about it. Thank god I'm still faster then them. :) I wonder if some of those members on here that DINGED me for my Boeckmen comments, blaming it on the o-line for his job now understand it. :!
