2008 Football Rumblings

...and guys like Will Smith. I agree with you - this type of players is the biggest gap that we have had when playing with elite teams in the last 3 years.
No question, we've been on the short end of the stick in the d-line department, and have been victimized by superior d-lines when on O, but if you laid out the tenets to Jim Tressel Winning Football 101, OSU hasn't done any of the important things right in the six losses going back to 2005 (Texas, @Penn State, Florida, Illinois, LSU, @USC).

# Won field position battle? Nope.
# Won turnover margin? Nope.
# Committed fewer penalties? Nope.
# Superior special teams? Nope.
# Tackled well/played assignments? Nope.

What do every single one of these games have in common? Uncharacteristic mistakes that we're not supposed to see from a Jim Tressel team: Missed FGs, blocked FGs, pick-6s, TDs nullified by penalties, TOs leading to easy scores, shanked punts, short kickoffs, big kick returns ...

Even in some of the "big" wins. the team has struggled with these facets of the game:

UM, 2005:

# Won field position battle? Push, OSU Avg Start - own 23, UM avg. start - own 26 --- Only once all game did either team start beyond their own 37.
# Won turnover margin? Nope, OSU - 2 turnovers, UM - none
# Committed fewer penalties? Nope, OSU 5-50; UM 3-20
# Superior special teams? Nope, missed XP, missed FG, 19-yard punt from own 20 setting up UM's go ahead TD
FINAL - 25-21

ND, 2005:

# Won field position battle? Nope, OSU - avg start own 23, ND avg start, own 26, including once at OSU's 15.
# Won turnover margin? Nope, OSU - 2 turnovers, ND - none
# Committed fewer penalties? Nope, OSU 7-53, ND 6-48
# Superior special teams? Nope, 2 missed field goals
FINAL - 34-20

Texas, 2006:

# Won field position battle? Yep - OSU avg start own 32, Texas avg start own 20 - only 1 possession for UT started beyond their own 23!
# Won turnover margin? Yep, OSU - none, Texas - 2
# Committed fewer penalties? Nope, OSU 8-55, UT 4-39 - although you could throw out the helmet-to-helmet garbage call on OSU. :p
# Superior special teams? By a bit, did miss a field goal, but AJ Trapasso avegared 50+ yards per punt.
FINAL - 24-7

UM, 2006:

# Won field position battle? Nope, OSU own 26, UM own 35, with two of those starting inside OSU's 25
# Won turnover margin? Nope, OSU 3, UM none
# Committed fewer penalties? Push, OSU 4-50, UM 5-45
# Superior special teams? Push - nothing remarkable either way
FINAL - 42-39

UM, 2007:

# Won field position battle? Eh, push - OSU own 30, UM own 28 - both teams had one possession starting around midfield, but nothing dramatic
# Won turnover margin? Nope, OSU 1, UM none
# Committed fewer penalties? Yep, OSU 3-40, UM 4-45
# Superior special teams? Slight edge to OSU - no missed field goals, nothing dramatic
FINAL - 14-3

In the last three UM games, UM has not committed a single turnover and OSU has committed 6, but OSU is still 3-0. Weird.

Scout$--Tressel Looking For OSU To 'Play Fast'

Points of note:

Beanie will play but not sure how much

Competition for reps at WR has escalated and more guys are expected to see the field

Small is fine now

Rehring will return against Wisky

Pryor is the starter but Boeckman will be playing

All good to hear but Rehring returning concerns me unless it bumps Person out of the starting line-up. I don't want to see us revert to the opening day starting line-up because that clearly doesn't work.

I know Todd Boeckman has given 6 years of his life to the Ohio State football program but I would like for him to be used as a 2nd string QB now that Pryor has been designated as the 1st string QB. I just don't want Todd to be used as a yo-yo during the game.

We obviously all want the Oline to perform better than they did in the first few games but I still think Rehring (playing to his potential) is our best option at guard.

On Tressel's call in show today (not sure if it was tape-delayed), a caller asked how Tressel would grade the coaching so far this season, and Tressel replied that 3 wins out of 4 games is 75%, so a C-. I thought that was interesting.

Of course, as any knowledgable fan can tell you, there's a simple way to fix all that -- play nasty, with more aggression, and get there by kicking the players' asses.

I think Brewster stays at center, for the time being. That frees up Cordle, a very experienced player, for a guard spot. Not sure if he can play on the right side, but it's worth a shot, considering Person's play. Person has looked good on the few times he's pulled around in run blocks, but his pass protection and penchant for false starts are chronic problems. If Cordle or Rehring can move to RG, it could help stabilize that side of the line. Bryant has looked shaky at times, but he's the most experinced at that position right now. Hopefully, he can continue to learn on the job. Rehring is too experienced to keep out, if he's healthy.

Agreed. What I was trying to say is while getting Rehring back is a plus, I won't like it if it knocks Cordle back to center and Brewster out of the starting line-up. I'd like to see Boone-Rehring-Brewster-Cordle-Browning.
