2008-2009 Ohio State Men's Track and Cross Country

Hassan Mead at Minny has been kicking butt and taking names this year in a variety of distance events. Wouldn't be surprised to see him take the 5 and the 10 and possibly something else. Wisconsin has some solid 1500 guys but nothing like they had last year. Jager leaving early really came as a surprise to them. He has been 14:30s this year in the 5 and they could really use that right about now.
I will be curious to see if Dan White and Jeff See can put it together for this one. Dan had a monster 800 this weekend and I thought I read Gary say he can go lower with better weather. We all know what See can do when he is healthy and crampless. I talked to his Dad at Big Tens XC when in was in Columbus back in 07, he said Jeff struggles from "Chronic Cramps" more than any other distance runner. He said that It's pretty much hit or miss on whether or not he gets one but his performances show it big time. If he can be on this weekend, I'd say he has more than an outside shot at the 1500 title. Throw in guys like Balyo, Ealy, maybe even Leslie, and our distance squad can rack up some good points. Lets go Bucks!:oh:

Mead is a stud... he has gone 13:28 this year... puts him 3rd nationally. He hasn't run the 10K yet but I agree with you that he'll probably win that.

Actually two of the Badger 1500 runners are currently in the top 5 nationally. Bolas and Miller, both juniors, have run 3:37. See will have his work cut out for him to beat those two.

I think Ealy can steal some points in the 5K... currently ranked 11th but 5-13 are all within 10 seconds of each other so it will be who runs well on Sunday to determine places 2-8.

Ealy has a good chance of winning the 800, especially after his great run in Oregon last weekend. That should give him some confidence.

I also think both Leslie and Olinger can place well in the steeplechase... both have run sub-9 this year and if they can repeat that they'll get some good points for the Bucks.

Lets go Bucks!:oh:

I believe Ealy is from my neck of the woods, Reynoldsburg...

2009 Men's Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships Preview

I compiled a simulated meet using the latest Big Ten Performance List. Obviously the meet will not go down exactly as shown but it gives a good idea where teams are. This looks like it could be a very balanced, competitive meet for the team title. Here are the simulated scores... the first number in parentheses is track points, the second field points, the third decathlon points:

Simulated Final Standings

1. Minnesota - 103 (37,47,17)
2. Michigan - 101 (74,27,0)
3. Penn State - 94 (31,62,1)
4. Wisconsin - 88 (68,13,7)
5. Ohio State - 83 (67,8,8)
6. Iowa - 79 (42,39,0)
7. Michigan State - 74 (38,30,6)
8T. Illinois - 68 (60,8,0)
8T. Indiana - 68 (29,39,0)
10. Purdue - 61 (20,40,0)

Team Preview

Minnesota - Well balanced between the track and field events. Minnesota will win a few events (5000, 10000, decathalon) and will place high and/or multiple athletes in many others. The Gophers will be carried by distance runner Hassan Mead (potential of 20 points in the 5K and 10K) and their decathletes. Mead has the third fastest 5000m time in the country running a 13:28 earlier this year. Expect him to run a tactical race, staying with the pack until the last 800-1200 meters then he'll take off. Decathalete RJ McGinnis has an automatic national qualifying mark of 7626, top 5 in the nation, and two other decathletes will give Minnesota some big points in this endurance event.

Michigan - As Adam Harris goes so do the Wolverines. Harris has been a consistent runner this year and should get the Wolverines 28-30 points in the 100,200,4x100 and can also gain a few points in the long jump. Michigan has the potential to score in all but one track event making them the most balanced team on the synthetic surface. If the Wolverines can steal some points in the field events they can overtake Minnesota for the team title.

Penn State - Light on the track except for the 800 (Ryan Foster has the conference's best time in 1:48.79), heavy in the field. Penn State has the potential of placing four athletes in the triple jump and could get them some big points. Clarence Smith is one of only 12 athletes nationally to jump over 16 meters this year. Tanner Evak should win the javelin as he is one of only 10 athletes to throw over 70 meters this year.

Wisconsin - If this was a distance carnival Wisconsin would do very well... unfortunately for the Badgers it isn't. As always Wisconsin will rely on the strength of their distance runners to score them points. 1500m specialists Jack Bolas and Craig Miller both rank in the top 5 nationally, both running 3:37 this year. Wisconsin also has the potential to win the 10000 and steeplechase and place multiple runners high in the 5000.

Ohio State - Ohio State looks to perform well on the track but will struggle in the field. The Buckeyes will be led by their distance crew and long sprinters. Jeff See is looking to get back into form in the 1500m and run with the duo from Wisconsin. Cory Leslie and Chris Olinger, both under 9:00 in the steeplechase, have the potential to get some big points for the Bucks. Also look for freshman Thomas Murdaugh to challenge for the 400m title (43.58) and the sprint relays to place high (2nd in the conference in both the 4x100 and 4x400). If Ohio State can beat expectations in the field they could have a chance at a top 3 finish.

Iowa - While Iowa does not have any standout runners on the track they should be able to place well in the sprints and relays. Iowa's strength comes in the shot put and discus where they can potentially score 30+ points in those two events (2 placers in the shot put, 3 in the discus).

Michigan State - The Spartans lead the conference in only one event but have the ability to score points in a lot of events. Michigan State is led by discus thrower Lonnie Pugh (56.33m) and should be able to score in most of the sprint events.

Illinois - Like Ohio State Illinois will show well on the track and struggle in the field. Illinois is a sprint-heavy team with almost all of their points coming from the 200m, 400m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles and the two relays. Illinois is led by senior Lesiba Masheto, defending champ in the 400m (46.31) and their 4x400m relay team (3:06.83).

Indiana - The Hoosiers could place in all but three track events but most of those places not garner many points. Indiana's strength will be in the jumps, especially the long jump. Indiana could win the top two places in the long jump and should also place well in the triple jump.

Purdue - Purdue's strength is two events: the pole vault and hammer. They have three vaulters that may win one third of the Boilermaker's pointsa and their hammer thrower has a best throw 2 meters better than the rest of the conference. Purdue is very light on the track which will make it difficult for them to leave the bottom of the standings.

bkochmc's Breakdown

The numbers make it appear to be a three-horse race between Minnesota, Michigan and Penn State. Wisconsin will run well but does not have the numbers to score much more than 90 points. Ohio State's downfall will be the field events which is interesting considering that is generally where they are strong, especially the throws. I think there are four tiers where the teams will fall:
(1) Minnesota and Michigan will battle it out for the conference title
(2) Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State will compete for third. This will be interesting because Wisconsin and Ohio State will score most of their points on the track and Penn State will score a majority of theirs in the field.
(3) Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State will compete for the middle tier. If one of these teams has an outstanding championship they might be able to squeak into 5th or 4th.
(4) Indiana and Purdue will bring up the rear

Minnesota will win the title because of their balance on the track and in the field but if Michigan can steal a couple of points in the field and the 4x400m relay they have a great shot at overtaking the Gophers.

bkochmc's Final Standings Prediction

As a famous BuckeyePlanet philosopher once said "The key to the meet is team that scores the most points wins"

1. Minnesota
2. Michigan
3. Wisconsin
4. Penn State
5. Ohio State
6. Iowa
7. Illinois
8. Michigan State
9. Indiana
10. Purdue

I will revisit your predictions post after this weekend and if you are too far off there goes your title of Mr. Track of BuckeyePlanet:biggrin2: and it will be handed off to southcampus but I do see any predictions from him :)

Litlbuck's one team prediction: Ohio State will feast on the hometown cooking and finished third.

I forgot all about both of those Wisky guys. We might see those 2 in the 3k or a steeple. I've seen Bolas run some steeple and beast it.
I haven't seen much from Olinger this year but I haven't really followed track as much as I'd like. I will be there for this one though, cheering on some buddies.

Yeah Ealy is part of that Reynoldsburg empire. They had/have quite the program. Great coaching and something in the water out there produces distance runners. When they had Parker, Ealy, Trein, etc. WOW. I was a frosh when Parker was a senior, boy could those guys fly.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Ohio State roundup: Decathlon win puts men in fourth

Ohio State roundup: Decathlon win puts men in fourth
Sunday, May 17, 2009 3:19 AM

Patrick Woods won the decathlon, leading Ohio State into fourth place after the second day of competition in the Big Ten track and field championships in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Woods turned in a career best by totaling 7,405 points, the second best score in OSU history.

OSU's only other male placer was Adam Green, with a fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9 minutes, 6.71 seconds).

Indiana's Kiwan Lawson, a Marion-Franklin graduate, won the long jump with a regional-record 24 feet, 3 3/4 inches.

Ohio State's Thomas Murdaugh, a sophomore from Dublin Scioto, ran the fastest qualifying time in the 400 meters.

In the women's meet, a fourth-place finish from freshman Maggie Mullen in the javelin (141-11) was the highlight for Ohio State, which is in ninth place with 13 points.
Props to Patrick Woods for winning the Decathlon. I cannot think of a tougher event to win at a Track & Field Championship.

Jeff See took 3rd in the 1500 in 3:58. Very tactical race.
Murdaugh took second by .02 in 46.26! Bummer! Comer came in a second later in 5th.
L Thomas took 4th in the 100, nice!
I think we are sitting in 3rd right now, one point behind Purdue but the 5k is going right now
